This Cooper kid is generating some real buzz.

This Cooper kid is generating some real buzz.

So is the LB from Howard, Keith Pough. And at 6'2", 241lbs is in the Patriots wheelhouse size wise. From CBS:

STRENGTHS: Showed intensity and leadership qualities at Shrine Game practices, playing with a high level of energy. Excellent flexibility and agility for the position. Stays low with good fundamentals. Natural athleticism and fluidity, displaying the coordination and smooth hips to play in space. Lean, athletic frame, and does a nice job of playing balanced and low to the ground. Nonstop motor and brings constant energy to the field.

WEAKNESSES: Tends to lower his head, keeping his eyes in the wrong place. "Small-school" prospect will need to shed concerns over level of competition he faced in college. Room to improve his instincts and get stronger to improve his stack-and-shed ability.

Keith Pough, OLB, Howard, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Whilst NFLDraftScout have him ranked #359, I just don't think they're caught up. Have seen him talked about as a day 2 pick, possibly even challenging the top 50.

NE Patriots' Draft looks at some defensive prospects from the Senior Bowl:

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are a hell of a lot of really intriguing guys in this draft? Maybe not many blue chip players, but loads of "diamond in the rough" guys for those smart enough to find them.

i agree completely mayo it seems like this draft is just so close in its overall talent. not very many elite players but so much depth i feel like john simon is a big option being from ohio state with vrabel 2 time captain and great leadership wouldnt be surprised if hes our second round pick what time is the senior bowl on anyway

Consider some of the following players, pretty much none of whom will be a 1st round pick:

OT Kyle Long, Oregon. 6' 7" 311#
OT Reid Fragel, Ohio St. 6' 8" 305#
OT Menelik Watson, Floridat St. 6' 6" 320#

OL Terron Armstead, Arkansas-Pine Bluff. 6'5" 304#.
TE Nick Kasa, Colorado. 6' 6" 260#
TE Travis Kelce, Cincinnati. 6' 6" 260#
WR Markus Wheaton, Oregon St. 6' 182#
WR Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech. 6' 2"

DT Brandon Williams, Missouri Southern. 6' 3" 328#
DT Cory Grisson, USF. 6' 2" 316#
DE Lavar Edwards, LSU. 6' 5" 258#
DE David Bass, Missouri Western. 6' 4" 263#
DE Datone Jones, UCLA. 6' 4" 275#
DE Mallicah Goodman, Clemson. 6' 4" 280#
DE Joe Kruger, Utah. 6'7" 280#
DE/LB John Simon, Ohio St. 6' 2" 260#

S Cooper Taylor, Richmond. 6' 4" 228#
DB Jamar Taylor, Boise St. 5' 11" 198#
DB Sanders Comings, Georgia. 6' 1" 216#
DB DW Swearinger, South Carolina. 5' 11" 210#
CB Leon McFadden, San Diego St. 5' 10" 190#

That's just a few of some of the really intriguing guys in this year's draft. I'm willing to guess there are some future Pro Bowlers in that group.

I've been saying this all along, particularly for the OT and TE classes. This would have been a great draft to have, big needs, little depth and great scouts. Thankfully we're the Patriots so one and two don't apply :)

i love almost all those guys actually Patton is my favorite WR i love armstead and winters and on D i love Kruger, Simon, both Taylors and mcfadden and simon if we could trade our first for a 2nd and 3rd to get 2 of those guys i would be a happy guy

Dan Pompei discusses the impact Phil Savage is having on the Senior Bowl, and previews some prospects of interest:

NFP Sunday Blitz | National Football Post

I had heard Will Davis discussed as a riser, but Pompei mentions him being a potential 1st round pick, which is surprising to me. NFL DraftScout current ranks him 61 - ahead of David Amerson, among others - so if he's being considered a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick now then a jump into the late 1st is certainly possible.

Another note re Savage: for the first time, the Senior Bowl has allowed 2 underclassmen in, OT's Justin Pugh and DJ Fluker:

Senior Bowl 2013: D.J. Fluker, Justin Pugh first non-seniors to be on rosters - SBNation.com

It sounds like Savage is being very careful about opening the door to underclassmen:

Phil Savage, the executive director of the Senior Bowl, said Fluker and Pugh had to meet certain criteria in order to be eligible to play in the game. First, the players had to have been with their college teams for four years. The players also had to have graduated before Dec. 31 and have get permission from their college coach to be eligible.

I find that stipulation hilarious. You can be a dumbass senior who wasn't red-shirted. But, if you were red-shirted you have to graduate. Both players arrived on campus the same day. Maybe, one got hurt and a medical red-shirt. Yet, they consider them different. Color me puzzled.

Maliciah Goodman has longer arms than Chandler Jones:

Goodman’s arm length is shorter than Fluker’s (35” 7/8) but his wing span is the largest at 87” 6/8

I'm more and more intrigued by him.

Lane Johnson checks in well on arm length:

Passes the arm "test" RT @dpbrugler: #Oklahoma OT Lane Johnson with 35" arms and CMU Eric Fisher at 34". Great start for both #SeniorBowl

Surprisingly, Ziggy does less well:

34 5/8 arm length, 82 2/8 wingspan RT @fgervasi: @ShanePHallam Really interested to get Ziggy Ansah's weigh in info!

https://twitter.com/ShanePHallam/status/293355879036772352

Margus Hunt: 6'8, 277

Nick Kasa 6'5, 271.

Markuw Wheaton 5'11", 183 - I thought he was shorter than listed 6'1"
