Patriots Mesko Was a Difference Maker Sunday
By: Ian Logue

Looking back at Sunday's win over the Texans, it's tough not to appreciate the role that Zoltan Mesko played in the battle for field position, and he made some pretty big kicks during the victory....

Someone correct me if I am wrong but Mesko has made the punt game a positive all year. Nothing new to the Texan game.
When JE was uninjured the Patriots ST's all around were a plus all year (save a couple of Gost kicks -- but he was never a minus). It is easy to see the return game has suffered without him. So be it, JE is gone and we will make do without him. As long as the STs coverage doesn't repeat what they did against the Texans, STs are definitely an overall plus.

One comment was that the rest helped him. Not sure about that, but he had some boomers for sure.

Kickers are People Too...props to Mesko

...I don't want to speak for y'all but Mesko is quietly having a great year and really has been pretty reliable for this team.

Sunday his play was huge.

When you get to this level and all the teams are so good, special teams plays a big role.

Glad to have him and hope he continues those booming punts Sunday (and a couple lucky bounces would not hurt)!

Zoltan The Magnificent was just that Sunday night.

Glad they drafted this guy! My favorite Patriots punter since Josh Miller who was here too briefly..

Mesko is everything we desired him to be--and maybe a bit more. One more to add to the truly COMPETENT players on the Pats.

Re: Kickers are People Too...props to Mesko

He had a great game against Houston. Against the Ravens' offense, we're going to need him to keep burying them deep again.

Can never underestimate the utility of a money punter.

Andy Lee's play was a big reason SF was able to beat us the first go-round.

And I hate to bring this up, but the Giants' punter (I can't even remember his name, because I'm a hypocrite) was a big part of us losing Super Bowl 46.

"That jackass" will work nicely. :bricks:

Steve Weatherford. Also happens to be the pound for pound strongest player in the league.

BB always talks about winning the field position battle. It's nice to have a strong legged kicker who is actually good at his job after the years of mediocrity at that position B.M. - before Mesko.

That's the one. What a bastard.

I agree with you but the coverage team is going to have to do their part as well on punts and kick offs. They gave up some big returns against the Texans and I think Baltimore has a better return game. Ravens Pats games are always close and they seem to always go down to the wire. Although I hope we get a big lead early and this isn't the case this time, this game might come down to ST play so the coverage team needs to bring their A game to help tilt the odds in our favor.

Was just going to add that. "That guy" killed the Pats' field position.

Thing with Mesko is he can boom it, but he also understands that net yardage is the name of the game. He's gotten very good at placing the ball inside the 20. Kind of the opposite of that 'roided up — sorry, muscle-bound — ex-Panthers punter we had a few years ago who just wanted to crank it no matter where he was kicking from.

And there should have been a roughing or running into penalty that last game; Texan guy definitely went into the plant foot on his own.
