I don't know if this has come into play in the locker room or amongst the coaches.

I remember BB and some of the other guys saying after Gronk broke his TE record last year that the players were aware of the record and that the team wanted Gronk to get that record.

Enter this weekend. As Brady is tied with Montana for the most play-off wins by a qb, I wonder is his team anxious to get that win for #12.

Yeah yeah, I get it, it is a team game, they should not need any more incentive, yadda yadda.

We are however talking about Brady eclipsing Joe Montana, one of the best if not the best playoff clutch qb's of all time. As far aas football goes, it is kind of a big deal.

It's kinda an under the radar storyline here but I hope this team, and definitely Brady himself as he is sometimes the issue, gives it that little extra effort this week.

Of course 12 does not talk a lot about it but it is no doubt in the back of his mind.

They're playing for a Lombardi nothing else

Um...

It's not like a TD record or passing record, it's a record for WINNING so I'm not sure that it represents another thing to play for, as you always are playing to win anyway.

With all due respect Halifax, they can't get that record unless they....ummm......win.

Anything else is the equivalent of looking up in the stands for your parents during the game.

Would they want to win LESS if the record wasn't at stake???

I can assure you when Brady had ZERO playoff wins under his belt he really, really wanted to beat the Raiders in the Snowbowl.

I think the idea is the record adds even more motivation. I disagree with that premise though.

No no, i get that you are playing to win and the SB and all of that.

The 'next one' is the best ... right...;)

I hate bringing the a-clown 52 into this analogy but I am thinking with that being his last game at home, there was a little extra mustard and emotion.

There should not be, but i disagree that emotion does NOT play some role in playoff football.

If Spikes is playing with a little extra that game, to me that increases the percentage of that ball being on the ground.

We've never been distracted by excess motivation provided by records, with the possible exception of "playing for a place in history" at 19-0

Some people talked about that a little much, which seemed un-Patriots-like even at the time.

Now, I don't really think that was anything that played a big role, probably less than Tomase and lie-gate, to be honest, but it left a bad taste on top of a game that left an awful taste anyway.

Isn't there a quote about how stats are for losers...???

Give me a win, do not care about stats..

Well, in this case the win IS the stat, so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Yes, it's misused frequently. BB is a huge believer in the stats and numbers.

Nah, it's not like he would ever get Vinny Testaverde into a game to throw a late TD pass, keep feeding Gronkowski the ball on a meaningless game or let Doug Flutie dropkick a football for no apparent reason. Belichick pays absolutely NO attention to stats!!

In this case, the stat is wins, so, if I remember how the transitive property works, you're saying "winning is for losers".

... okay.

#1 and #3 were in meaningless games.

#2 was to get Gronkowski work in chipping off rust.

This Sunday is all about win.

Chipping off rust? I'm talking about throwing him the football in the waning minutes of last year's game against the Bills in hopes of having him break the TE receiving yardage record.

I've never put much stock in the concept of "milestone" games.

This postseason brAdy will surpass Montana in playoff wins...unfortunately Brady will have to wait till next year to pass him in Superbowls though

Why does it have to be either or?

If the game is in hand, sure let your players rack up some accomplishments. Just don't let that get in the way.

(I always thought though it would be funny if Tom screamed at his offense "I WANT A FOURTH RING d%#*!@t" if they weren't playing to par)

What some might not know is that if the Pats win the next 3 games (includes the SB) then Belichick will tie Tom Landry for most post season wins by a head coach.

I don't think a person on a team can want to win more because of what it means to another person on the team. If they do, they shouldn't beon the team to begin with.

Hey -- I mentioned in another thread that I'd like to see some stats comparing some QBs in playoffs in recent years. So I just had a boring WebEx at work and used the time to do some research. This is what I came up with.

Stats are since playoffs that followed 2007 season; hope this is right!:

QB...........Games.......W-L........TD.......INT.....Yards.......QB Rating
Rodgers.......7.............5-2........16.........4...........2,055........105.4
Brady..........8.............4-4........18.........11..........2,068.........90.13
P Manning....6.............2-4.........11.........4...........1,893.........98.27
Brees..........6.............4-2.........17.........2...........2,064........109.4
Flacco.........10............5-5.........10.........9...........1,814........73.59
E Manning....9.............8-1(!)......15.........4...........2,242........97.23
Ben R..........8.............5-3..........8..........6...........1,940.........84.4

Brady's games against the Ravens kind of killed his rating. Flacco's stats include his game last week (too lazy to go back and redo math); he seems to be along for the ride mostly. Brees has been pretty good. And we know the drill with Eli.

Have at it.
