2013 Cap space including carryover per Clayton

The Jets are screwed, blued and tattooed. The only hope that team has is that a starter quality QB falls in their laps for pennies, either through the draft or out of desperation. They'll either have to play a lot of games with the cap or take a year off of signficant team building outside of the draft.

But wait, Deus
They'd need a HC with the intelligence to start that QB, the new one w/o the tattoo

I'd like to obviously start with Welker, even if that means the franchise tag again, and then move on to Woodhead and Edelman. I don't think it's going to take too much to retain both of them, and both can play key roles heading into the future.
Viewing the unrestricted free agent landscape:

Bengals - Danny Woodhead to compliment the "Law Firm"

I'd like to be able to get ONE of Vollmer/Talib (preferring Vollmer), and ONE of Arrington/Chung (preferring Arrington, due to his ability to also start on the outside in a pinch).
Viewing the unrestricted free agent landscape:

Colts - Aqib Talib

Jerraud Powers, Cassius Vaughn, Darius Butler don't cut it at the cornerback position.

Colts - Sebastian Vollmer

Starting right tackle Winston Justice, who only signed an one year contract with the Colts, will be an unrestricted free agent.

Prediction:

Patrick Chung will find employment in the CFL.

IK, we're two games from the SB and talking about the future with this team is almost as exciting. If Talib is resigned, the defense really only has two holes: a coverage LB and a better option than Gregory starting.

DE: Jones (2nd year)
DT: Wilfork
DT: Deaderick/Love (4th year)
DE: Ninkovich (2nd year at DE coming off a solid season)
OLB: Mayo
ILB: Spikes (4th year)
OLB: Hightower (2nd year)
CB: Talib (2nd year with team)
CB: Dennard (2nd year)
FS: McCourty (4th year/2nd at safety)
SS: Gregory (2nd year with team)

Only one hole in the starting unit and its not that bad.

Really would like for us to get another DT and SS before going after a LB. Getting Fletcher back next season will help out depth wise.

Our draft needs if we resign Welker and Talib in order as to my opinion are

SS
OL
DT
WR
CB
DE

I think we can address both DE and CB through UDFA or FA and leave the remaining 4 for the draft (unless we get more picks then go after all 6 areas).

The Jets' situation isn't as bad as it looks, and the Phins' situation isn't as good as it looks.

The Jets are definitely going to cut these guys:
Jason Smith - $12M
Calvin Pace - $8.56M
Bart Scott - $7.15M
Eric Smith - $3M
and may cut Sione Pouha for another $3.8M, which would give them $34.5M in savings and $15M in cap room. They then need to replace all of those players, but they'll at least be able to field a team of NFL players.

The Phins have to either resign or replace their starting RB, #1 WR, starting tight end, starting left tackle, starting DT, #1 CB, and a starting safety. That $35M is going to be gone in a hurry.
Sure the Jets can cut their way out of Cap Hell, but the problem is that they have to replace those people, and with close to $80MM tied up in just 7 players. They will have just $41MM to sign the other 46 players they need to fill their roster and sign their rookies.

That means not only will the Jets be starting Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes again. Not only does it mean they have to find a new DC, OC, and STC, the great majority of their roster will be made up up low rent FA's and minimum wage players. Because they are picking so high its likely that they'll get a couple of decent draft picks out of this draft, but other than that, talent-wise, that bad roster from 2012 isn't going to be getting any better next season

I agree.

Final numbers in with sub defense - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

One statistic that was charted over the course of the Patriots' season was the number of times the defense was in a sub package (five or more defensive backs) versus their base defense.

The reason for charting this is to highlight the importance of depth at defensive back (a fifth DB is essentially a starter), as well as the importance of pass rushers who fit in the sub.

The final numbers: The Patriots were in sub 57.4 percent of the time this season (644 of 1,121, including penalties). They were in base on 39.4 percent of the snaps.

I know it's a warped way of looking at it but the entire Patriots secondary in 2012 has a smaller cap value than Revis. Sure the Patriots have money committed elsewhere, but I was curious to see how this particular spend item matched up.

At this point you have to ask yourself, which team looks like it has a handle on managing the salary cap?
