These are preliminary figures. Has us rolling over $5.6M in carryover for a total of $18.6M available. Absent data on # of players signed and players to be cut, extended, tendered...can't decipher where each team actually stands, but we appear to be in good shape relatively speaking. A Brady extension would likely free up almost half again as much space. A Wilfork extension and/or restructures of a handful of other recent deals invluding Mankins, Mayo and the TE's could easily free up several million more. Welker if tagged would take up $11.5M. Notable pending FA to be replaced or re-signed include Talib, Vollmer, Woodhead, Edelman, maybe Chung.

Apart from our numbers, a few other things stand out to me.

First, the Jets at -$19.4M. Ouch. I know there are a few fixes that will get them to even or so, but those will be tough and still not exactly free up a ton of space. They are going to need one heck of a draft if they think they are going to improve much.

Second, the Dolphins at +$35.8M. They improved over the course of the season. If Tannehill can make progress, they have a lot of space for investment. Interesting to see what they do with Bush and Hartline.

Third, the Colts and Bengals each with over $46M available. Especially the Colts here.

Last, the Cowboys and Steelers each with more than -$10M available. The Steelers have always been so well run but they have definitely taken a step back the last few years.

Calvin Pace - $8.56M
Bart Scott - $7.15M
Eric Smith - $3M
and may cut Sione Pouha for another $3.8M, which would give them $34.5M in savings and $15M in cap room. They then need to replace all of those players, but they'll at least be able to field a team of NFL players.

The Phins have to either resign or replace their starting RB, #1 WR, starting tight end, starting left tackle, starting DT, #1 CB, and a starting safety. That $35M is going to be gone in a hurry.

They also will have to dedicate about $6 million to the rookie pool. And let's not forget they will need to get a QB who can compete at least with Sanchez. This is how I'd like to see it played out. Unless I missed something when going over the player contracts, pretty much every important player is locked up for AT LEAST 2013 and 2014 except Ninko who becomes a FA after 2013. That's got to be a scary site for the rest of the NFL.

That cap space comes at a good time for the Colts. Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings and Victor Cruz are all potential guys who could hit the market and add a huge dimension to that team. Not to mention, Ryan Clady is a top 5-10 guy at tackle, or even Vollmer to lock down the other side.

They are most likely follow the Green Bay model and sit on all that space and keep pushing it forward, but they gotta use up a good amount to meet the floor.

The Jets are screwed, blued and tattooed. The only hope that team has is that a starter quality QB falls in their laps for pennies, either through the draft or out of desperation. They'll either have to play a lot of games with the cap or take a year off of signficant team building outside of the draft.

That's a nice projection as far as not needing to sign many of our own next year in the offseason, although one could argue that this year balances that out a bit since we seem to have a nice handful of key players to take care of.

I forgot that McCourty signed a 5 yr deal, and have been thinking that it's a 4 yr deal the whole time, so that's another added bonus that I didn't realize.

If we can get at least 3-4 of our own re-signed when FA kicks into gear in Feb/March, we will be in a very good spot for the future. A Brady extension would be the icing on the cake to save money and give fans the peace of mind that he'll definitely be here for the next 4 seasons or so, but is hardly necessary since there's a high likelihood that he'll retire here no matter what. A restructuring is necessary however, although the 2 may go hand in hand.

I'd like to obviously start with Welker, even if that means the franchise tag again, and then move on to Woodhead and Edelman. I don't think it's going to take too much to retain both of them, and both can play key roles heading into the future.

I'd like to be able to get ONE of Vollmer/Talib (preferring Vollmer), and ONE of Arrington/Chung (preferring Arrington, due to his ability to also start on the outside in a pinch).
