The Hairdo and The Beard

I'd be happy to get either or both of them.

Elam is going to have to make some adjustments to not get flagged all the time in the NFL, but he brings an energy and intensity that is a bit reminiscent of Troy Polamalu, and which I wouldn't mind having at all in our defense. I really don't want to go DB with our first pick, but if he's BPA then I'm ok with it.

Frederick has been on my short list for a long time, but I wasn't sure if he would come out. He has a tremendous combination of size, strength, and incredible smarts. He's really, really smart, and understands the subtleties of line play and offensive schemes like few linemen. My biggest question is whether he has the flexibility and agility to fit in for the Pats. But he's a very intriguing dude.

First round The Hairdo. Matt Elam, SS, Florida

The force is strong with this one.

I like Frederick, but he might be too big for Bill. He's 334 pounds.

My point is simply that if Dante says "Get him," I don't much care whether he's 334 or 234. As far as the OL goes, in Scar I trust.

Sure, but Cannon was an extreme case where the talent was miles above the draft stock.

Um, are you ever going to do anything other than one line Star Wars quotes?

Oh, I don't know...

He actually seems pretty discriminating with the Context and Import of his Commentary, if you look through his Body of Work ~ currently 4 Posts.

I would certainly agree that if he doesn't actually start contributing some actual Analysis, pretty soon, this Act will age rapidly...But, taken as an Whole, so far, he's in the Top 20%, as far as I'm concerned. :D

The beard has a teammate Richard Wagner of who might be a good rt in the third round or so.

Can somebody help me out with Elam? I'm having a hard time not seeing Patrick Chung when he was a prospect, and Chung's college game didn't transfer overly well to the NFL, especially when it comes to durability and hitting ability.

Yeah no go on Elam. Too many cheap shots in the Louisville game. Seems like a lot of penalties in the pros. Plus seems to be a meathead who might not be as coach able as they like. I think they ho back to u of Illini and draft terry Hawthorne cb in the third or fourth.

Well, that's the million dollar question. Is Elam going to be Troy Polamalu, Pat Chung, or something in between, and if so, what? Your guess is as good as mine. I love his intensity and energy, but indeed had some of that coming out. Elam seems more instinctive and a better big-play player than Chung, and seems better in coverage, but safety is a risky position to assess. I'd be happier going with David Amwrson or Tharold Simon in the 3rd round, personally.

Personally I don't like Amerson as a safety conversion. To me on tape he seems soft, is a poor tackler, doesn't have great instincts or vision when the ball is in front of him and he is easily blocked down field. He does have some coverage ability so I think he would be better off staying at CB than S. But either way I think based off his measurable's he will be drafted higher than I would be comfortable with.

I do still like TJ McDonald from USC in the 3rd round. He would add a good combination of size, athleticism and physicality to the secondary and hopefully make some WR's think twice about going over the middle. He is very versatile with the ability to play close to the line, deep CF or line up against TE's in man coverage. Add in his experience, leadership and pedigree and I think he will be a very good NFL safety. I think he took a bit of a step back from last year, but I still like him a lot in the late 2nd/3rd round.

I thought McDonald was overhyped as a possible 1st round pick, but as a 3rd round value I like him. Nice size at 6'2" 205#, pretty good cover skills, and safety experience. He's ranked #94 right now by NFL DraftScout. I like the 3rd round for a DB. I'd be happy for BB to pick between him, Amerson or Tharold Simon.

My current personal favorite scenario:

- Take Johnathan Hankins, Ziggy Ansah or Jonathan Cooper if they're somehow available in the 1st, otherwise trade back to 50 and pick up a 3rd rounder, and hope that Alec Ogletree (character questions) or Dion Jordan (shoulder questions) falls and take them, or trade the pick into 2014
- Probably go WR in the late 2nd. Markus Wheaton or Quinton Patton sound good to me. Da'Rick Rogers is tempting, but has issues.
- Get a DB in the 3rd with the extra pick. As I said, I'm happy to let BB decide between Amerson, Simon and McDonald. All 3 have potential, and I probably like them as much as any of the earlier possibilities.
- Get a DE with our late 3rd round pick. The injured Tank Carradine is an option, as well as Joe Kruger and William Gholston, who have great size and athleticism. Our "LDEBC" approach has worked fairly well, and doesn't require an immediate impact player unless someone like Ansah happens to be available.
- Somehow pick up some extra picks and get an early 4th and 5th round picks, and get interior OL and DL help. Brian Winters (123) or Khaled Holmes (109) would be good OL values. NFL DraftScout has Bennie Logan currently ranked 101, but I can't believe he'd last that long. Brandon Williams (144) has been my day 3 DT binky for months.

I really hope they don't go back to Illinois. Most underachieving defense in CFB.

Please no on Khaled Holmes. Terrible prospect.

Fortunately, BB doesn't seem to think terribly highly of players USC has turned out as of late. The only ones he's drafted have been 7th round flyers (Cassel and the oh-so-memorable Oscar Lua).
