Ahh - now you are the hunted and now it's time to pay the piper or watch your team break up into a thousand parts.

Welcome to our life....except we have figured out how to compete, year in and year out. Our teams future is very bright, capwise. Why, if we can just stay healthy one year, we will win going away.

Where will the money come from to sign these guys??

One thing is for sure, and the Colts will indeed find this out (we have lots of experience lately), that it is indeed a different "mindset" being the "hunted" rather than the "hunter". Teams approach you way differently, and bring their "A" game week in and week out against you. That is one of those things (intangibles), that is just so hard to calculate and account for in game preparations, the following year. Not only that, it tends to change the mindset of your own players (some). They finally got the ring, now they want the BIG $$$$$$. Boy, don't we know about that one !!!!

The Colts will soon find out what happens when you throw all your money into one season. They;ll still be competitive, but that defense is going to be absolutely friggin shattered.

I think Peyton realizes that things could get dicey, even if his fan base doesn't. He said today (paraphrasing a radio blurb WEEI has played on the flash) how tough it is to win and that teams change and situations change and you can't assume anything for future seasons.

And I think he also realizes that while Dungy will likely return for next season it's unlikely he hangs around beyond that - he has long stated his desire to win a championship and then focus his attention on his ministry work.

DeOssie, sometimes knowledgable on WEEI, was saying today that the Colts would only be $7 mil. under the cap and Peyton would have to restructure his contract just to resign Freeney and sign their draft choices. Never mind the 12 or so other FA's. Also, mentioned possible cuts, such as Stokely, for cap purposes. Not too many on their defense could be good in a 3-4. Polian has stated a deal would get done on Freeney, so apparently they intend to pay him.

Don Banks (who in my opinion is way better than Peter King) touched light on the Colts offseason today. He states:

"You can make a heck of an argument that no other team in the NFL is in worse shape than the Colts, who have a bevy of potential free agents on their roster and are projected to be less than $5 million under the $109 million cap. Only three teams have less room, and of those, none have as many key free agents. Any way you cut it, the Colts are going to suffer a significant talent drain this offseason."

Sounds good to me. Does anyone see any parallels to the Ravens SB winner in '00? Obviously, the makeup of the teams differ, but if I remember correctly, the Ravens had to make huge cuts during the following offseason.

So--would you sign a Stokely if he became available?

I actually think the loss of Harper will be a big one if they don't get him back. He is the only above average corner on that team. I think they will get David back for a cheap price, but if they don't get either of those guys back, then...wow.

Does anyone know how often teams do not utilize the franchise tag at all? I don't think the franchise rate at any position is small enough for the Colts to be able to fit it in their cap.

Just watching the Colts play, you can see how bad the Colts are at spreading money out to mid-range players. This is reflected in their miserable special teams and backups. Their nickel back (I don't remember his name, but he had the INT for TD) has to be one of the worst nickel backs in the league. Dexter Reid? Ben Utech as a starter??? I'm happy the Pats know how to pay their lower level players well, which results in the incredible depth we've had over the past 6 years.

Thought someone here, maybe Miguel, posted the Colts as $4.7 under or thereabouts last week, but someone over on Indy Star said today that Clayton now has them at just $2.5M under, which could mean they had some NLTBE's earned or incentives tied to the Superbowl. I wouldn't doubt Condon had a million dollar incentive in Mannings deal tied to SB or SBMVP. The poster was hoping that included like Freeney's tag and the RFA's

They can save $7.5M by converting Mannings 2007 $10M roster bonus to signing bonus to just lay on top of all the amortized money already pushed forward. Just gets them through another year, but that is the Polian way. What he has to believe is the new CBA won't be voided in 2008 which many believe it will be, because if that happens his hands will be tied again via a new extension or restructure of Manning deal because the expiring CBA rules will raise their ugly head again.

The Pats choose to business plan for the worst and hope for the best. Polian plans for the best and goes into survivor mode in the event of the worst - like his threats last March to sue the league if he couldn't redo Manning and Harrison's deals the way he planned to because of some stupid, stupid rule named after a some flashy former cornerback. :D

How much do you suppose that OLs who never get called for holding while protecting Peyton can demand on the FA market? I would think those types would be in short supply. ;)

Imagine being a free agent lineman going to the Colt's and being told "It's ok, you never have to worry about holding again unless we're up by 30 points.

Polian has vowed to keep Freeney which is fantastic news heading into next year. He and his 5.5 sacks couldn't be more overrated, yet the Colts are still in love with the Freeney of 2 or 3 years ago. They'll pour all their money into keeping him meaning June and Harper walk. They keep the most overrated compenent of their D while losing two impact players who are better at what they do than Freeney is at what he does. Meanwhile, John "Mr. Peepers" Clayton will be on suicide watch.

Freeney demands double teams on almost every down freeing up Robert Mathis and Brock.

Nick Harper and Cato June being impact players is laughable. We let Thorton, Peterson, and Washington go. Then we won a Super Bowl. June is none of those three.

You'll find out how laughable June and Harper are next year when you try to replace them. Hilarious you're already turning on your players. Both are better than what you'll be replacing them with as the Colts won't have any money for FA.

The Colts have a history of this. They do not pay LB's. Why would they give June big money now when they wouldn't with the better players I listed above?

Harper is a good player but if he has to go, so be it. Marlin Jackson can fill the role.

Maybe so. But having been in your position three times, it's so easy as a fan to say 'oh so and so wasn't really that good anyway, we can plug any old joe in there and be fine."

Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. The Pats, who have a FO every bit as good as Indys, tried that with Duane Starks and Monty Beisel in 2005 and it was a complete disaster.

Regardless their depth will be tested next year. Plugging in rookies in roles that were once held by experienced players who knew the system isn't hard. But having them perform at the level of those players did is difficult for a first year player regardless of how talented they are. That said, the Colts have drafted quite well so I would expect them to find quality replacements that will take a year or two to develop.

I just can't wait until other teams hire away both of their coordinators, and the following year hire away their new coordinators. freaking copycat league. Oh, and I hate notre dame.

Can you imagine where the colts would have been if the new tv deal hadn't blown the cap all to hell.

The Pats had played things straight and were strategically positioned to take advantage of a low cap era continuing. The Colts and a few other teams got the break of a lifetime by the cap going up by what $20M and erasing all their previous bad fiscal management.

Although they may be in the "worst fiscal shape" at only $5M under the cap; I think a bunch of you are CELEBRATING BEFORE YOU CROSS THE END ZONE.

Just think back a few years and at this point a whole bunch of teams were not $5M UNDER; but rather $5M or $10M OVER THE CAP. Yes SOME of those teams did the crash and burn and rebuild program. But a WHOLE BUNCH OF TEAMS were able to cut players & cap and re-sign or recruit almost as good players or draft younger sometimes better players and survive the cap purgatory.

I don't think Indy's situation is as Doom and Gloom as some of you want to believe. They will still be very competitive.

IMO rather than hoping they burn out cap wise; I think it is more likely that the rest of the AFCS gets more competitive faster and causes Indy to lose a few more games in the season, play some tougher games (ie deal wiht the injury lists we deal with each year) and thereby doesn't get HF advantage come playoff time.
