Let's say Lovie wanted to take it easy and have a little break from head coaching for a while and be a D-coordinator with less pressure.

Would you want him or mind him replacing Patricia as our defensive coordinator?

Again this is hypotheticals because i want to guage how highly everyone holds Patricia.

You can fill in any name and job to the sentence 'wanted to take it easy and have a little break from head coaching' and thew answer would be no.

So you think Patricia would be a better option over anyone is what you're saying?

I think he's saying why would you want someone on your coaching staff because they plan on taking it easy for a while. It implies lack of fire, character and desire.

Take the same proposed DC candidate and say "They want to be a DC because they really want to be a DC and focus on making the D as good as it can possibly be." and you might get a different answer.

Ask your question - is this about Lovie Smith or Matt Patricia?

As for Lovie Smith, I do not see any reason to bring him in unless there is a long-term succession plan that figures into this. If the Pats were to fish for a new DC, Rod Marinelli, the Bears' incumbent DC who will likely be fired by the new man, would be an option.

But again, the Patriots defensive issues are not a function of coaching. It's about talent, especially in the secondary. The Patriots have completely re-tooled the defense over the past four years on the fly. Next year, with the current group intact and some tweaks, the defense should be better with Patricia as a stable presence.

Please just stop. Lovie is from an entirely different coaching tree (Dungy's Tampa 2) and has no basis in or function on this staff as long as BB is still breathing. At it's peak we fairly thrashed Lovie's talented defense. Not to mention besting his defense when it mattered most as DC of the 2001 Greatest Show on Turf.

Besides Lovie is still delusional about his ability to be a HC.

Matt Patricia is the most experienced DC available for this system unless you want to argue for swapping him with Pepper or bringing back Pees or Mangini (which has about as much of a shot as hiring Lovie).

Please just stop is right.

I think Matt Patricia, who IS a rocket scientist BTW, is a developing star as a coach. He appears to be a very sound and fundamental Coach. He is still young and full of piss and vinager. Early on the Defense played conservatively and simple. As they gained some experience, he infused some more sophisticated plays.

I say its fine to watch him develop, along with "his" very young Defense.

Whoever is the DC in NE as long as BB is the HC will be someone from his tree. BB will always insist that his DC run the defense within his basic philosophical structure.....and that's that. So when people talk about other great defensive minds, whether its Rex Ryan Rob Ryan or Lovie Smith they are just whistling in the wind. Not going to happen.

Want proof? Just look at the year BB brought in the current Packer DC, whose name escapes me at the moment. This guy has a great rep and resume, but he only lasted one year with the Pats because he and BB clashed so often philosophically. Its why Rob Ryan left, Because BB wouldn't let him run the defense based on his father's defensive philosophy.

That's why BB would rather train from within, than hire from the outside. He needs people who BELIEVE in the basic concepts that BB does. I doubt there is another defense in the league that runs a 4-3 with their DLmen playing 2 gap as a base. Its unique....just like the offense.

BTW- Az is right - Matt Patricia IS a rocket scientist. (RPI graduate)

Maybe I'm showing my age here, but I just can't get used to that first name :p

Leaving aside the wording of the question (wanting to take it easy). I wouldn't be interested.

His defensive philosophy is fundamentally different than that of BB. So it wouldn't be a fit. He plays a Tampa 2 with penetrating D line as opposed to the gap control preached by BB.

Agree, except about Ryan. He was 'running' anything, he was a position coach. He 'left' because he was hired as a DC when Crennell was the DC here.

I knew somebody would bring up Rat Snitch Ingrate Fredo Mangini. He would be a good fit in Buffalo. The Pats could beat his butt a few more times and having been to a game up there, I know of several excellent locations for clandestine video cameras to steal his hand signals and read his lips - on both of his faces.

What makes you think that Lovie Smith could work for Belichick? What makes you think that Belichick believes that Lovie Smith could bring something more to the defense that Patricia doesn't already offer?

In other words, BB is mentoring a rocket scientist to be the defensive coordinator (works for me).

The spy satellite is coming along very nicely.

From the Onion:

CHICAGO—Harried, flinch-prone Bears head coach Lovie Smith said Thursday his biggest concern going into the 2011-2012 NFL season would be the constant presence of the cruel, derisive voices in his headset that keep calling him an idiot.

"I had hoped the voices would go away after last year, but they've been there all preseason," a visibly shaken Smith told reporters, saying the voices could be frustrated, angry, exasperated, or "even just sad, sometimes," and confirming he hears them whenever his headset is on. "Our first practice of the year, the first thing I heard when I put my headphones on was 'Welcome back, idiot.' I hadn't even done anything yet."

As opposed to "catatonic ex-Colts head coach Jim Caldwell"? :p
