So, Pro Football Focus picked Devin McCourty as a Pro Bowl calibur....cornerback

I know the official ballots did this, but PFF too? And he actually made it, as well? Wow.

Anyhow, PFF did their own Pro Bowl selections, according to their own ratings. They selected McCourty as a CB for the AFC. Apparently they think his performance is equal at both CB and S for this year. Hmmm.....

Their write up is below:

"Cornerbacks: Antonio Cromartie (NYJ), Devin McCourty (NE) and Chris Harris (DEN)"

"This was a tricky one. Cromartie was the only sure fire selection, allowing just 42.3% of throws into his coverage to be complete while assuming the Revis role of manning up with a team’s top receiver more often than not. We’ve paired him with McCourty who has playing well at cornerback and is now playing well at safety. It seemed wrong to omit him for excelling at two spots. Thirdly we went with the versatile Harris who is showing signs of developing into one of the best cornerbacks in the league. That said there were strong cases and many profanities uttered as the team made their cases for Alterraun Verner, Brandon Flowers, Kareem Jackson and Adam Jones."

When did McCourty get beat quite a bit?
*Didn't get beat vs. Tennessee.
*Didn't get beat vs. Arizona.
*Got beat twice by Jacoby Jones vs. Baltimore (once for a catch, once for a PI), plus once in the end zone by Torrey Smith.
*Didn't get beat vs. Buffalo.
*Got beat once by Demaryius Thomas vs. Denver 30 yards downfield, where Thomas went up and beat him to the ball.
*Got beat once by Golden Tate vs. Seattle, when playing outside technique and the safety didn't show up.
*Played safety vs. New York.

While picking off 2 passes and defending 15.

Not Pro Bowl material. But in the context of secondary play around the league, I'd hardly call that being beaten "quite a bit".

McCourty was lousy at CB this season, for the most part. This is another example of why PFF is worse than useless.

That's not close to reality and you know it. McCourty's CB made a big improvement over last season's. BTW- EVERY CB gets passes completed on them. CB's playing zone get even more.

Sunday with Pats playing what looked like a 3 deep zone, with the wind at Miami's back, some fans were outraged when the Dolphins completed a couple of well thrown stop routes in front of McCourty. That's Pats fans piling on a player who was simply doing his job. Is that what your doing DI?

BTW- Though PFF should be viewed with some skepticism, it can't be summarily dismissed. Consider that over the years their graders have gotten more experienced football observers, and now they have access to the all 22. Granted this is the organization that rated Vince the worse pass rushing DT in the league, so not everything they come up with should be trusted, but not every they come up with should be considered. PFF isn't the only stats group that like McCourty better than you....and BB likes him a LOT, not that his opinion has any value compared to yours :rolleyes;

Yes McCourty played very well at corner. He had 2 plays vs Baltimore that many fans just took as the only 2 plays of his season, and the die was cast for them.
Yesterday, I focussed on McCourty for probably 85% of the plays. He was up on the receiver most plays, and he played a terrific game, every snap at corner.
He has been very good at both corner and safety this year, despite the uninformed bashing he takes.

But, PFF IS useless. Their analysts are poor, their method is terrible and their conclusions are awful.
That doesnt mean they dont get one right now and then by dumb luck, but using them as a source to back up an opinion is pointless.
