I sure hope so. It would be good to have Crennel back here to help coach the defense. He's out, we all knew that, questions is... does he come back here?

This one comes from Steve Wyche of NFL.com:

According to NFL.com's Steve Wyche, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to retain general manager Scott Pioli despite a disastrous season, according to a source briefed on the situation.

As for Romeo, the report is in line with what we've heard from others:

Coach Romeo Crennel won't be as fortunate. The source said Crennel likely will be fired, although no final decision has been made on the coach's future.

Why??

Belichick, Patricia and Johnson have helped this defense evolve, particularly in the last half of the season.. and bringing him back would destroy the "meritocracy" that Bill likes to employ.

Can see bringing him back in some type of consulting position, but not at DC.. Romeo is 65 now been in coaching for 30 years in the NFL, he may want a break.

He'll get a zero-dollars call to discuss Denver, of course. Up to him to drop a hint as to whether he'd be interested in a lower-status role with the Patriots next season, as that's all that would be available.

Crennel and BB had a falling out when Crennel left to HC the Browns.

A reporter asked BB if he thought Crennel would make a good HC and BB replied " No." At the NFL owners meeting shortly after, Mangini and Crennel were cruising the buffet table and they snubbed BB without saying a word.

Maybe things are better now between BB and Crennel, but the Pats like to hire from within and Patricia is doing a good job. So, no to Crennel.

Crennel should take a break from the NFL and open up his own Dunkin Donuts franchise.

98.5 just reported Crennel's been fired.

I don't recall this .... These 2 go way back, and I don't see why going to the browns would have been a problem.

I don't think he will come, but Patricia sucks

Matt Patricia?

BB was shown on bended knee going over some in game pics with the D late in the game and it's been said Matt Patricia has taken a bit of a backseat lately.

Just curious what others think about this. Not a huge issue but could be interesting with RAC now available.

Sorry- didn't see this topic under the Romeo thread- mods please merge.

Where did you hear this? I don't recall this. Belichick seemed genuinely happy for Weis and Romeo getting head coaching opportunities, and was ready for their departures (see SB39 final moments).

The Patriots have a top 10 defense(in points allowed) that has imporved has the season went on.

Why do we need to call Crennel again?

Im with you. The 2004 Americas Game had bill talking in great peaise of romeo. Not only that i heard bill tried to get rac here as dc after cleveland fired him a few years avo.

I read it from a sports website.

May have been national or local. Cant recall.

I know it's not going to happen, but I'd take him back in a heartbeat. Say all you want about Patricia (personnaly I think he's doing ok), but he's no RAC.

I think RAC was upset because BB said that he wouldnt make a good HC.

I can't believe you guys fell for Triumph's pot stirring. Sometimes his posts make you wish there was a "dislike" option.

On some levels it makes some sense to see RAC back in NE some capacity, but it will never happen as DC. BB develops coaches usually from the ground up. The guys he has in place now are HIS guys....just as much as Romeo was HIS guy back in 2004. Also don't forget that in 2001 and 2003, the Pats ranked in the mid 20's in total defense, so its not like you'd likely see a "dominant" D. In fact those D's were a lot like the one we have now. Mid 20's in total D and top 10 in scoring D, with a great TO ratio.

Next year the defense will likely be a bit more talented and more importantly a lot more experienced. Lets see how Matt Patricia evolves along with his evolving D.

Yeah, I don't remember this.

Perhaps "misread" may be more appropo...

Please. Crennel is leaps and bounds better than Patricia. As a matter of fact, the last few games, it seems BB has been coaching defense... again. Coincidence?

I don't think it'd hurt to have him in some role similar to JMD last year, but right now I wouldn't mind keeping things as they are. Since Talib started playing the defense has been outstanding aside from one game where the 49ers started in our territory at least 4 times that I recall.
