In the past, the Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo has conducted trades with New England Patriots general manager Scott Pioli. Since it's obvious the Chicago Bears do not have a competent quarterback on their roster, I propose the following hypothetical trade:

Would you trade Matt Cassel for at least one of the Chicago Bears 2007 NFL draft pick(s)?

Only if it's a 1st rounder. Harder to find a goodback then you think. Also that's not going to happen because it's too early for the Bears to give up on Rex Grossman I think.

I think Cassel could be our Matt Schaub. I think he has some potential.

He is too unproven to interest the Bears though.

Unless it was an insane offer, and I doubt they are prepared to make one, I wouldn't trade the security Matt provides us entering his 3rd season just yet. Next year provided we find another solid developmental prospect or a viable veteran he will probably be available though again only for an offer that trumps peace of mind.

And with the liklihood Asante is a tag and trade we could end up with more draft picks than we can realistically use and might be in more of a position to be the trader and not the tradee (swapping picks for players or using one to sign a RFA).

Cassel is signed through next year. I can see them trading him next offseason but not this year. We only have two QB's that know the offense on our roster and trading one of them away would not be a good idea. The Pats will either need to draft a QB late and groom him for the #2 job in 2008 and/or sign a semi-young QB for the same role.

I think Cassel will be traded but I think your one offseason to early.

There's hardly a logjam at the QB position on this team. There is room for another draft pick at the emergency slot, or on the PS, and we already have a lot of draft picks.

WHo would replace Cassell?? You run the risk of bringing someone in, teaching them a very complicated O who is a heartbeat away. Cassell also has a very reasonable cap hit also..$455,220. Which is cost effective for this team.

What if the Chicago Bears tossed in quarterback Brian Griese in the trade?

Unfortunately or fortunately, Cassel hasn't had enough playing time to get his trade value to be higher than the value of keeping him.

Personally if I were another team I would prefer Cassel, coming with 3 years of NFL practice and training, to all but the first round QB in this draft. I would prefer Cassel to the Drew Stantons and Troy Smiths of the world. But I have a feeling GMs will love to take the rookies in the second round - if we could get a 2008 #2 I'd be thrilled but I have a strong feeling we wouldn't get that.

If I was going to make a trade with the Bears, it would be to trade Samuel for Vasher and a 4th round pick.

I think that Vasher can be as good as Asante in our system.

I seriously doubt the Chicago Bears would trade Nathan Vasher, considering Nathan Vasher covered Marvin Harrison all over the field last night.

Why would the Chicago Bears trade a player who is not only their best cornerback but under contract as well as for next season?

Urgent, you are better than that. It doesn't take much watching to realizet that Cassel is better than those two. Even after his success at NFLE, Davey never looked that good to me. Cassel looks a lot better other than lacking the pocket presence which comes with experience.

Something tells me that, as a team that was on the verge of winning it all this year, the Bears would not want a completely unproven guy. They'd want a veteran who has proven himself.

The Chicago Bears have a veteran quarterback on the roster, Brian Griese.

If they were to trade him I would think the Browns would make the best trade partners since Romeo needs a guy who can both be the future and present. I'm not sure ownership is willing to have another season like this one. I would also think the draft choice would be conditional but who knows BB/SP can be pretty steadfast and might say it's a one or we are done.

Why would they after signing him to a 5 year deal last season after outbidding Cincy with a front loaded deal and salaries ranging from $1.2-2.2M going forward as the veteran backup to Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton...

Bill doesn't like paying seven figure salaries for a backup QB either, which is why Huard departed. He prefers moldable youngsters or salvageable retreads in the low six figure range coupled if need be with a grizzled vet with a minimum cap salary deal. Griese has bounced around since his Michican days blocking Tommy's path the glory, losing his shot to be Elway's replacement to Jake he Fake after a couple of lackluster seasons wih Shannahan, he is totally imobile, struggles behind anything beyond stellar Oline play and has already had knee surgery and has become fairly one dimentional and increasingly INT prone as a result.
