Browns to fire HC Shurmur; expect more McDaniels talk

I'm sure there will be a lot of McDaniel talk for every job, but nothing is going to come of it. He's not going anywhere, and won't for a couple of years.

BTW- I thought the Browns played competitively and hard for Shurmer that he deserved another year. Christ Rex is going to get another year, why not Shurmer. The Browns weren't good team, but they weren't a national joke.

Peter King tweeted tonight that he will be surprised if Josh leaves this offseason and a week ago he said (on TV, no link) that McDaniels is having more fun coaching this year than he ever has and didn't expect him to leave back then either.

This was tonight's tweet, btw :

I'll be very surprised if Josh McDaniels leaves New England this postseason.

Wouldn't you? :)

In any case, I don't see Josh leaving anytime soon, either. I'm just saying we're going to hear talk about it.

I'm sure that the Browns fans would just love to get another former Patriots coordinator at this point. It's worked so well in the past!

This is all a function of the Lombardi talk. If he lands the gig he won't have learned much beyond spouting BB platitudes in his post Cleveland the first time around career. He'd have zero power, really just a glorified scout. That is reason enough for Josh not to even consider the job. Gigs in Cleveland will be available again before long and he may consider one then...

The fact that Bill never tapped Lombardi including when Pioli moved on and he felt the need for some veteran presence in the FO (and that post went to Floyd) tells me while he may like Mike he doesn't see the off the air analyst as a potential franchise contributor. Lombardi has been jonesing for a FO career lifeline for several seasons now and BB never threw him one.

Speaks volumes, that. Most of the time, you can learn more from what ISN'T said than from what is.

I don't get all the HC talk right now. The guy was a failure as a HC...some of the worst decisions by a HC ..and was also pathetic in his OC role in St Louis (although you can't cook a gourmet meal without the groceries to quote Parcells). I think he should be thankful that BB took him back here and that he is "flourishing" again. Build up some more credibility Josh....Learn from the master for a few more years......then we will see what happens.

They certainly were a joke....it's just that it's been the same joke for twenty plus years

Bad organizations make bad decisions over and over and over ad infinitum. I fully expect some silly team to steal McDaniels and I wouldnt be surprised one little bit if the green trolls from New Jersey came calling.

According to Chris Mortenson the Browns may indeed have their eye on a Pats' OC, but not Josh McDaniels:

As NFL owners and executives revisit the success of college coaches at the pro level, Penn State's Bill O'Brien may be on more short lists than Oregon's Chip Kelly and that would include the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, according to league sources.

Florio also reports that the Browns have a "short list" of candidates and aren't going to conduct a national search, and hope to lock someone up this week, which would preclude McDaniels (and Nick Saban):
