"According to wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, the team enters the game with 100-plus plays in their arsenal. That is about 30 or 40 more than the typical offense in the NFL." And they make some up on the fly to boot, amazing

New England Patriots Aim for NFL Record: Most Plays From Scrimmage - WSJ.com

In the time it takes to read this sentence the New England Patriots could run two plays. That's an exaggeration. But the pace of Patriot play running this season is so furious that they're on the verge of breaking an NFL record.

The Patriots have run 1,116 plays this season, and if they run 84 in Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins they will break the record for most plays from scrimmage in a season, a record currently held by the 1994 Patriots.

Nice. But the 94 patriots? How is that possible?

The Pats have already broken the NFL season record for 1st downs, with a game left to play. They have 416 1st downs so far, breaking the previous record of 398 by the 2004 Kansas City Chiefs, an average of 27/game.

I would have never thought that the '94 pats held the record for plays

Remember that in the "olden days" the clock STAYED stopped when you went out of bounds, etc. The NFL rules changes have shortened the game.

No running game (one year before they got Martin) and Drew was a mad bomber that year. Incompletes stop clocks.

That year Bledsoe was league leader in attempts (691), completions (400), and yards (4555). Oh yeah, and interceptions (27).

The next draft they drafted Curtis Martin, go figure ;)

Actually, they tied the record of 416 (26.0/game) set by the Saints last season. :)

It actually makes more sense on a team like the 94 Pats a team that was not great when the year started but improved greatly as the year went on. Had a QB that threw the most attempts in a season and were likely playing catch up in a lot of games.

On the Flip side you have a front running team that usually gets huge leads and common thinking might be to start running the ball and sitting on leads but they never take the pedal off the medal making it possible to pass a record usually left to mediocre teams.

Lastly I think this truly highlights how methodical this team is. I think it would be great if the offense stepped on the field and consistantly scored one play drives and if they did they would have no chance at this but they are so down right methodical that they regularly go 10 play drives.
