Gave Peyton Manning the largest QB contract.

Kept not one, not two, but all 3 or their WR's (including Stokeley).

Signed Vinatieri.

And won the Super Bowl.

Where's the mystery? They draft well, they have a HOF QB and an excellent coach.

This is how:

Keiaho, Freddy ERFA Colts LB
Ulrich, Matt ERFA Colts G
David, Jason RFA Colts CB
Gardner, Gilbert RFA Colts LB
Lilja, Ryan RFA Colts G
Schobel, Bo RFA Colts DE
Scott, Jake RFA Colts G
Sorgi, Jim RFA Colts QB
Thomas, Josh RFA Colts DE
Utecht, Ben RFA Colts TE
Boiman, Rocky UFA Colts LB
Freeney, Dwight UFA Colts DE
Harper, Nick UFA Colts CB
June, Cato UFA Colts LB
Klecko, Dan UFA Colts DT
Moorehead, Aaron UFA Colts WR
Morris, Rob UFA Colts LB
Mungro, James UFA Colts RB
Proehl, Ricky UFA Colts WR
Rhodes, Dominic UFA Colts RB
Wilkins, Terrence UFA Colts WR

With an approximate salary cap of $5M (and that includes the $$$ for rookies).

Dink and dunk, my man. And plenty of interceptions. They learned this method from some other team.

I do think the Colts had a relatively easy road. The Chiefs sucked, the Ravens were about as inept on offense as the Bears. The patriots were absolutely gassed.

Their road doesn't compare to the Patriots tough Super Bowl roads.

I don't think this colts team was one of the best Super Bowl teams. I do think they were the best team this year, but that defense of theirs is so incredibly flawed. They are way too aggressive, sticking so many men on the line. But look at the teams they faced: 3 terrible quarterbacks, three teams with terrible coaches, and one team without decent wide receivers. These were the exact 4 teams to play if you were going to be that aggressive on D.

The Colts made the decision to keep all their WR's and let Edgerrin James leave.

We made the opposite decision, highlighting our RB's and letting all the WR's leave.

Did we make the right decision?

We won those 3 SB's on Brady's arm, and not the running game.

Letting Branch leave cost us at least one regular-season game, which meant giving up the home-field advantage to the Colts.

Did we just throw away our best opportunity to pick up the 4th Lombardi this year?

You're assuming we let Branch leave. Whereas that wasn't the case at all. He was going to hold out, and after we offered to give him all the money he wanted (if he fired his agent) the NFL thorugh a fit and forced the Patriot's hand.

Jeez Mikey, this is aweful - the Patriots have only won three of the last 6 superbowls and now three other teams have each won one - two of them falling into the crapper the following season. What is wrong with us???? Why can't we be more like the Colts...why can't Belioli be as smart as Polian??? Why won't Belichick cater to his QB like Dungy and Cowher? Waaaahyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????????????????

I think this colts team is won of the worst to ever win it. I do not think they were even has good as any of the three teams the patriots beat in the SB.

thank you!!
these woe is us, why can't we be like the colts posts are hilarious.

The Pats organization is BETTER than the Colts organization!

Absolutely correct, and I hope I'm wrong, but until the Colts win another SB, I don't think they will suffer the ravages that typically beset a SB winner. Sure some of their players are going to be looking for their big paydays, but I think the league views the Colts success to be largely a result of Peyton's superior play to the point that I don't think teams will be raiding the Colts organization trying to capture some of their mystique.

Teams will still be looking to the Pats for their next organizational "guru" from the BB tree.

I seem to remember the '01 team having a mean running game.

I guess I'd envy them if we hadn't won 3. I think we'll take 'em next year.

By the way, the answer to your question is they stayed with their model of offense oriented and resisted the urge to copy others when it wasn't working!

Vinatieri? Isn't he the guy with the short kickoff that was returned?

That's not exactly true Ray. I think tonight you saw something similar to what you saw last year with the Steelers. Teams (and coaches) who learned from the mistakes they made against us for 3-4 years and modified their approach to game planning to be more like us. Polian may have continued to shop for the same groceries (deluxe offense and bargain basement defense) but he picked up or retained a few pieces to placate Dungy and Dungy coached them up to play physical as well as fast. And reined in the prolific QB over the last two seasons until he learned to manage the game rather than insist on trying to dominate it. Still goes against Peyton's instincts, and you could see that a couple of times tonight when he employed the Manning face. (I think once he even stomped his foot - LOL.) But by and large he learned to do what Brady was born knowing how to do - just manage the freakin game. Take what the defense will give you and make that work. He's becoming a win ugly BB system QB - no wonder they gave him the cadillac.

Hmmm, so if the Colts are going to start winning ugly, is Polian going to get the rules changed back to the way it was before he got them changed to help the Colts' offense?

Here is how the Colts did it..

1 Play Herm Edwards - That was easy

2 Play Brian Billick and Steve Mcnair- Piece of cake

3 Play a Pats team that was raveged by the flu, just came off a war of a game against San Diego, was dog tired, and the Colts made more plays than the Pats did- Wasnt easy but they earned it.

4 Lovie and Rex Grossman- double check...

Which makes it more hard to take, because we had the path to a 4th and six yrs... ugh...

Welcome to the wacky world of Pats Fans.com, adhd nation, how did the Colts do it.. they have a very good team, everything fell into place for them and they won, pure and simple. Next year they enter salary cap hell, will they repeat.. look at Pittsburg this year. The true test is to compete for this year, next year and the year after. Decisions on whether or not this is a good team, will be revealed following the '08 season.

Funny Mikey, I didn't see you here in the few weeks before the AFC Championship talking about how the Pats were cheap, blah, blah, blah... Now the Pats lost and the Colts win and you pop up. Hmmmmm!

Good points.
This was their year.
I don't see it happening again.

90% of this board didn't see them doing it THIS year.

In regards how the Colts do it. Polian is a master of the cap. He knows how to get it done.

Rhodes will end up on the Packers or something. He's as good as gone.

I somewhat agree that the Colts road to this win wasnt the most difficult, but I think this is the best Colts team we have seen yet, their defence played well enough to win, their offence is as good as it ever was.The offences of the Chiefs,Ravens and Bears wernt very good,I'll give you that. And once again, the real superbowl is the AFC championship game...
