It wouldn't be an economically sound decision to acquire a reciever who will break the bank only to be the 3rd or 4th option. the patriots need have their possession reciever in lloyd, 2 of the best tight ends in football, and the best slot reciever in welker. the pats just need to re sign welker and draft a poor mans torrey smith, someone with the ablility to take the top off a defense. this draftee doesnt even need to exel at the intricate routes in the route tree, he just has to attack the areas of the field that our current set of recievers typically dont.

This is how I see it as well. Don't spend big money on a deep threat because they will only be a piece of the offense and not the focus of it. Pay welker and draft a deep threat, they don't have to catch 70 balls just 30-40 that stretch the field and challenge defenses downfield. They already have all the other pieces on offense and that would be the final piece.

Nicely put. Though it wouldn't hurt if any additional receiver could run the route tree, too.

Welker is the strong preference, but would you franchise again and pay him $12 million for 1 year. At this point, the market will dictate and all the good and even average receivers were getting over 8 million last offseason. If we aren't prepared to go at least 3 years and at least 8-9 million per year, then we have to figure out something at this position. I'd rather pay Welker than any other FA even if it is a little more because of the history of FA WRs not working out: Galloway, Ochocinco. Even draft picks are spotty Chad Jackson, Brandon Tate.

Edelman is a FA too, but he should be affordable, similar to what we paid Slater last offseason.

Definitely like the idea of drafting WR this year.

If Welker goes then Hernandez will more than likely take his short to intermediate crossing routes. The Patriots could also draft Tavon Austin to play the position.

It would be tough to see Welker go as he's been a consummate professional and has produced at a level unseen from slot receivers in the NFL.

Hartline (had a great year and is an nfl # 2 standard receiver)

Hartline is legit, he won't light the world on fire but he'd be a definite upgrade over Lloyd.

If Welker and Edelman are re-signed, I see no further need other than for camp players who are there to take reps and in case of injury. Sure one of these, or a developmental player, could make the 53. However, Belichick has demonstrated that he is fine with a receiver set of Welker, Gronkowski, Lloyd, Hernandez and Edelman.

No matter how many times the need is stated by posters, we don't need have a critical need for a 7th receiver threat. We would already have 3 WR, 2 TE and a RB receiving threat. If we need a 7th receiving target, surely our 3rd TE should qualify as a target.

Greg Jennings may be worth the look. He's pretty much gone from GB after this season based on the latest rumors, and his recovery from the groin injury seems complete. Plus I don't think he'll command as high a price tag as he did before.

He's a true deep threat and DBs have to pay attention to him. Having him along with Gronk and Hernandez with Lloyd on the other side could be deadly.

Welker is gone IMO and sticking to it.

Then we build around Gronk, Hernandez, Lloyd and Edelman, a rookie and a mid-level free agent receiver. Still not horrible.

Besides we'll also have a sprinter on the team next year in Demps, who knows how we use him.

I doubt his price tag went down that much, and there are still a few games left this season for him to showcase his talents.

Mallett for Fitz and I am on board instantly. Throw in a conditional pick from NE based on Mallett's production. I know Larry makes some big $$$ though and might make it hard to re-up Wes, but if we could then Tom throwing to Larry/Wes/Lloyd/Gronk/Aaron/Ballard is just an insane thought.

We gave up a 4th rounder for Randy. I know Larry has been quiet in not publicly telling AZ that he wants out, but he definitely wants out. They need the money off the books to rebuild, have the foundations of a good defense, and Ryan is a better QB prospect than anyone available in the draft.

I'd make it a 1st rounder if Mallett starts 15 or more games and leads them to the playoffs, a 2nd rounder if the starts 12-14 games and they have 0.500 or better record, and a 3rd rounder if otherwise.
