Trading Ryan Mallett in the Off - Season

Mallett to the Jets ? You have a better chance of the NHLPA and the NHL coming to an agreement on a new CBA (which translates to no chance).

The patriots need a backup QB for 2013 and 2014. With Mallett, Belichick was comfortable going without a 3rd QB, gaining a roster spot. If anything, we should consider extending Mallett if that is possible.

He did that with Hoyer out of the gate as a rookie. Meant nothing when push came to shove (finances, roster spot). Rohan Davey was once the #2 here, as was KOC. Meant nothing.

There is no guarantee Mallett will survive another TC here. Hoyer's RFA tender cost had as much to do with their choice as anything Mallett did. They will have to bring in competition in some form (recycled vet like Hoyer or Cassel) and/or draft or sign an UDFA. If they have a taker for Mallett might as well recoup something, although I doubt they recoup what they invested unless they do a conditional deal. He's not a natural fit for this offense either, although his skillset may appeal to others in a lackluster year for QB's with more than a quarter of the league looking for answers at the position.

I listed them as they are in need of QB help and more empty spots mean a greater value for Mallett. I mean with the exception of Smith he is one of the best options available at the position.

To get anything for Mallet he has to play one of these last two games and come in and look like a quality starter. In the preseason and his limited chances this year he hasn't done that. Shiancoe screwed him on that pick against Houston but still.

I agree. Lets not trade Mallet until/unless we can showcase him for maximum value. And I have to say I felt bad fir Mallet as well after the Shianco deflected catch.

A third is just even return for what we used on him.

Nice nuance/point from Deus' about Cassel being availabl next year.

If Bill is willing to trade a QB within the division it's the kiss of death because it indicates he has no fear whatsoever of the consequences. I think the Jets and Bills are aware of that, as are their fan bases, so they could never sell such a deal. As Deus pointed out the Chief's are in a similar position, and it's FO likely on the way to unemployment office, and to some extent what happened to Cassel (which wasn't exactly his fault) has likely lessened what was already a leery market for Patriot backups.

The only way Mallett has any trade value above his earlier draft position (late 3rd) is if he gets in the next two games and creates a buzz. And knowing BB's penchant for seeing his football players play 60 minutes of football - something they didn't do this week - don't count on it. He may see a blowout quarter or two if the opportunity arises. But remember, we are still working out some kinks and will be hopefully re-integrating Gronk into the offense and looking to work on some worst case scenarios lest they arise down the road.

What do you think about the idea. Brady has atleast 4 good years in him and next years QB class looks atrocious compared to the last years (the last 2 years have been extremely good) and many teams still need a QB.

Jacksonville Jaguars
New York Jets
Arizona Cardinals
Kansas City Chiefs

are in dire need right now with

Buffalo Bills
San Diego Chargers
Oakland Raiders

needing to develop a QB.

With so many teams at need for QBs what do you think could we see him leave in the off season? I think a high 2nd rounder could very well seal the deal. Next year is his 3rd year as a Pro and I believe he sees that his chances starting for the Pats is rather slim (as high as Brady getting injured for a long period)

Haven't people learnt since everyone said Hoyer could fetch a second rounder?!

Sheesh.

Won't happen.

You're talking about the guy they solely entrusted Brady's backup role to. You don't trade that away unless someone else gives you more confidence.

Mallett hasn't proven his value for anything at this point.

I think the Patriots should make a concerted effort to trade for Alex Smith. He'd be a great back-up to Brady for a year or tow and an excellent bridge to the next guy. He might even flourish under a guy like Josh McDaniels

I don't understand the thought process posters are having that Mallett is going to be worth a draft pick of significance. There is no body of work. That lack of experience does not equal a #1 WR, or even remotely anything close to a pick that would equal his original draft. As Mo points out, he's not likely going to see any work, with the exception of possible garbage time. Hardly a true test under game circumstances.

I suspect people are still in love with his college work or his combine workout (which I have no idea of his combine #'s). This guy could likely be Tom's successor, sure. He could also be Giovanni Carmazzi. We have no idea, and trying to put a high value on that unknown seems highly unlikely from my seat.

Exactly how would he flourish under Josh McDaniels if he isn't playing? And, I'd take his current coach over Josh any day of the week.

Hoyer - UDFA
Mallett - highly rated 3rd rounder

Spot the difference. Not to mention the weakness of this years draft class. I mean there might be not even one franchise QB in this draft. Cassel will be available and we know he works in this system.

I'm with Deus. This wouldn't normally interest me too much, but the inevitable availability of Cassel makes this awfully intriguing.

To me, that's the major X-factor, along with a couple of other considerations. IF Cassel is available, IF it looks like Brady is going to play beyond his 2014 contract, and IF someone wants to make a decent offer for Mallett, then the time to move Mallett could be sooner rather than later. All very big "ifs", but possible.

Factors that might favor a team making an offer for Mallett:

- The draft sucks for QBs this year
- There's a dearth of good FA talent
- A lot of teams are desperate

I wonder whether a conditional deal might be doable. Something like a 2013 3rd plus a 2014 3rd which is upgradeable based on performance. Just a thought.

The idea has merit. Tebow and Cassel should be available next year, so QBs that have worked with McDaniels could be brought in.
Cassel yes, Tebow no. Is there another word even more direct than no? I'll take that word.

I'm from the school of don't fix it if it ain't broke so I see no value in trading Mallet unless somebody is idiotic enough to fork over the unthinkable value.

- How much of an NFL body of work do college players have?

- Do NFL teams base their draft decisions on a players college work and/or combine workouts?

I wonder if Cassel is ruined / figured out by the league

2008 was a perfect storm. No opponents had a clue about what he could do. We had the easiest schedule we have had in any year I can remember. We had some fairly remarkable (i.e. fortunate) wins against middling teams to go 11-5, losing to every good team. We had tons of talent back from an 18-1 team.

I don't think that Cassel, even under McDaniel, would be a capable QB if he had to play. I'd prefer Mallett, though it's more of an unknown.

Well he was actually better statistically in 2010 with the Chiefs than he was in 2008 with the Pats.

Doesn't make sense to me. You only trade Mallett when you can get more than you gave up for him, and I don't see anyone coughing up a 2nd when he hasn't done anything to show he can play in this league. If a team gets a woody for him and offers a second then by all means consider it, otherwise don't create a hole when you don't need to. Stick with him until a good offer comes along.

And then in 2011 and 2012 he is practically at he level of Mark Sanchez, or (somehow?) even worse!

no confidence? arm shot? beat up too much? I don't see him play enough to know what has gone so horribly wrong so fast, and how much of it is fixable.

As players like RG3 and Wilson (and Newton last year) have shown, you can win without playing an "NFL" offense, and Tebow won last year. The virulent anti-Tebow stuff is ridiculous, particularly because he could be brought in as the #3 behind Cassel, and because it would be done only if BB and McDaniels were both fully on board with the idea. It makes pretty much anyone who rails against Tebow worthless to listen to.

And I'm not sure what you think there is about Mallet that "ain't broke", since you've never seen him do anything in games that count.

David Carr syndrome. He might be fixable, he might be totally finished.
