Reiss and Bruschi: Beaten in their base defense

That's awfully misleading. The 180 yards includes the 31 yard fake punt. If you exclude that, then the 49ers rushed 38 times for 149 yards, which is 3.9 yards per carry.

Hell, we even had the fake punt covered. Two defenders out there just watched Goldson run around them. Horrible play recognition. M. Cole was one. Forget the other

Which is far less than the Niners' average.

Should be more like Pats beaten by turnovers, their own special teams and Arrington not being able to make the stop on Crabtree

I agree that it was a tad misleading though not completely off base either. If the base D would have covered past 20 yards deep, I wouldn't have had a big problem with the defense (a smaller one). This loss had several ingredients:

** The 9er DL was beating the Patriot OL for a majority of the game and the result was TFB didn't have time to operate. Too often the 9ers could rush 4 or 5, leave a fair amount of defenders in coverage, and still get to TFB WAY too quickly. Double WW and AH off the line, man on everyone else, get to TFB in 3 or 4 seconds.....that's a 'forgetaboutit'.

** How many times did the 9er receivers get open past the last defender? The 9ers scored multiple times on the long passes and missed a few others.

** TO's. Fumble, Int, Fumble, Int.

** Penalties. False Start, offsides, illegal shift, holding on ST, holding on ST. Shooting themselves in the foot by putting themselves in a hole multiple times. TFB didn't have the time to be in 3rd and long...

** NOT making those critical plays. +Make a tackle on the big run back late in the fourth quarter. + 3 and 15 fairly deep in 9er territory and Patriots are on the verge of getting the ball right back on a 3 and out. CK throws a SIMPLE screen pass that goes for almost 20 (PUNCH! in the gut). + Fake punt that actually had 2 defenders in the area but the play was not made. + Fumbled snap where gore/CK should have been tackled for a loss and setup the Patriots to force the 9ers into a FG. + 9ers putting the ball on the ground several other times but ending up back in the hands of the 9ers. All these plays didn't necessarily lead to points for the 9ers, but they stole momentum potential and kept TFB and the O off the field. Some of those Plays SHOULD have been/needed to be made...

Imho, the base D running D was satisfactory enough to win if not for the other problems. Ultimately this loss goes to the 9ers taking the heart of the Patriots potency away with stellar pass rush. It goes on the Patriots turning the ball over 4 times. It goes on the Patriots pass coverage allowing several long pass plays that were or led to scores. This loss goes on not making those critical 7 to 8 plays that can change the game.
