Bedard: Loss to 49ers could pay off for Patriots

Re: Bedard:This loss could pay off for Patriots

Colin Kaepernick 14/25 216 yards and 4 touchdowns. That's all you need to know, unless you're ******* prophet and predicted he would throw 4 touchdowns.

The patriots nullified the turnovers when they tied it up only for the defense to give it right up.

ps i don't respond to ignorant ******* questions:rocker:

Well, turnovers give up valuable field position, minutes of rest for the defense, and more cracks at a TD with the offense is always a good thing. Turnovers, even if they don't end in a score are a big deal.

Re: Bedard:This loss could pay off for Patriots

I usually like Bedard but completely disagree with the entire premise of that column. I wrote in another thread, the Niners had eight posessions that started in Pats territory, two inside the twenty and four inside the thiry. Maybe some 'bend-don't-break' defense--where they hold the Niners to a FG--would have been nice, but then again they did get a fumble recover and an INT when it looked like points would be scored. And I personally think the Talib PI was a real bad call that would have resulted in a punt but that's another story.

Starting field position ruled this game...the Niners average field position to start drives was their own 47 yard line, and were basically gifted free points when they started drives at the Patriots 5, 34, 3, 27 and 12 yard lines--all but one of those is a chipshot field goal and the longest would be a 51-yarder (i.e. they had five posessions where a FG was the downside of that posession so the fact that San Fran came away with just 17 points on those drives is impressive to me, and had the ball bounced a little different it could have been as few as 10 points (the Kapaernick fumble that resulted in a SF touchdown). Fact is, the Niners had six fumbles in the game and lost just one of them, that's just crap luck any way you slice it.

The Pats D had some protection issues but that'll happen against the spread. I thought given the circumstances--tons of turnovers, deal with a short field over and over again, not getting bounces--they actually played pretty well.

First, the 49ers did score as a result of Patriots turnovers.

Second, the Ridley fumble and Welker INT were both on first down, meaning the defenses had just come off the field and hadn't had time to rest yet. It also means that the offense never got a chance to get going.

Third, every turnover that happens on a play other than 4th down, or the last play of the game, is one less chance the offense has to make a play, rest the defense, burn the clock, etc....

So, while you called my question ignorant, you don't seem to know much about the game of football, and I'll take that into account when reading your posts, and responding to you, in the future.

OMG

The patriots made it a new game when they tied the game up. The game wasn't over when the patriots were down 28 because there was still freaking time.

31-31 made it a new game with more than 5 minutes to go. The patriots did overcome the turnovers

Special teams and the defense With the GAME on the line cot them the win.

I don't have a problem that they lost last night ... we're a young team and they learned a lesson from the vets on the team. With Gronk in the game we're not even having this discussion ... we can take them and given the chance we will.

The fact that the Patriots were able to tie the score does not mean that the turnovers didn't hurt them (which was your claim), and end of a game is a function of all that went on before it. Your inability to grasp that is a problem of your cognitive functions, not a problem of others. You can't seem to process what's happening, either because you are new to the game (in which case, you could ask questions of more veteran people) or because you just can't grasp the game (in which case, further discussions with you will tend to be fruitless).

Hopefully someone teaches our offense how to handle the ball in inclement weather conditions between now and the playoffs.

Curiously, the Bedard column makes no mention of special teams...and yet you conveniently insert that in the discussion. They cost the defense 50 yards of field position and basically put the Niners in field goal range before the defense even hit the field. I'm not excusing them for that 'drive' because they gave a quick-strike TD in one play. But they also forced three quick punts on consecutive drives to allow the offense to crawl back into the game...seems you're conveniently forgetting that as well.

The defense played good until that one easy touchdown.

It felt like once brady tied it the whole team took their foot off the gas.

"Curiously, the Bedard column makes no mention of special teams...and yet you conveniently insert that in the discussion." Apparently, i watched a game or two hundred

That's pretty much where I am w/this one...just feels like if Gronkowski's back and the rest of the team is healthy, the Pats will beat most teams they face, barring craziness like last night.

Maybe Playing the 2 best defense in less than 6 days took something out of the patriots.

Was i the only patriots fan that still felt like the game was winnable down 28? it was a slim chance, but the patriots have the greatest quarterback of all time at it's disposal.

Well his column dealt with the defense, and how they were exposed. You brought up the TD that came immediately after the score was tied up but that was largely a failure on the part of special teams. I understand you need to be successful in all three phases to win the NFL but he was talking specifically about the defense...my argument is that they actually played a good game but it gets lost in the shuffle because they had to defend from terrible starting positions all night---five drives that started inside field goal range.

Please do me a favor. Take your computer, go to the highest rooftop that you can find in the immediate vicinity, and then see how far you can throw it.

I did that and now i'm using my downstairs computer.

There's no doubt in my mind that brady would have won have won the game if the special teams and defense didn't fail him.

Brady to me is that damn good.

He also would have won the game if he hadn't thrown two picks (one of which was truly his fault) and the offense didn't fumble multiple times.

The game was tied 31-31 with 6:47 left in the game. That makes it a new ball game.

Brady and the offense made mistakes in the begging of the game, but they did everything possible to rectify those turnovers.

Without those turnovers, the game could have been 45-31. That would have made it an over ball game.

How do you know they would have scored? They had more than enough chances to put points on the board before the brady onslaught.
