Bedard: Loss to 49ers could pay off for Patriots

These mediots can say what that want, but there were four turnovers last night.. if a team commits four turnovers in a game they seldom win.

Some quick research shows that the probability of winning a game when your turnover margin (TOM) is -2 in any given game is about 22/23%. http://www.worldacademicunion.com/journal/SSCI/SSCIvol06no03paper03.pdf

Hopefully they are done with the TO's now.

This is what I thought about the Giants last year before the Superbowl when we lost in the regular season primarily due to a negative turnover margin. I thought no way would we do that again in the Superbowl and then the intentional grounding safety and interception came in the big game.

This time I'm not going to say it's unlikely for us to be in this situation again because it can.

So I just hope we are even better prepared for an even bigger comeback if necessary and we find ourselves in a similar ugly game next time around, even with a negative turnover differential. We were still in a position last night to put the game away. Even after the huge return. We could have kept them to 3. Even after they scored the touchdown, we could have played that last drive better.

I hope this comeback just gives them enough confidence, that yes it can be done, no matter what. Don't stop fighting.

Good point--Oh, and Talib did turn around to locate the ball. Turning around slowed him down though, and when he realized the ball was on its way, he sped up.

Trial by fire, its games like last night's that test a team's composure. This Patriots team is toughening up.

but the 49ers didn't score off all of them.

That means the turnovers didn't hurt them that much.....The patriots at the rate they were going would have just punted.

The Patriots were driving down the field pretty good in the 3rd quarter before Ridley fumbled it. The score was 17-3 at the time.

I believe the 49ers scored off that one. It was easily a 14 point swing.

What?

Every turnover represents foregone minutes of possession, regardless of whether the opposing team scores!

If you asked any NFL coach if he would like to have extra minutes of possession in the game, what do you think his answer would be?

Such foolishness. :bricks:

Correct, but the 49ers had their share of drops, fumbles and an INT - I think the wet weather played a role. In the 49ers case they recovered their fumbles and the Patriots did not. Bad luck happens.

The more important factor for me was to minimize the injury report. If I have my choice between a bye and good health, I would prefer to have key players healthy.

The added benefit is that the Patriots scored 28 unanswered points against one of the best defenses in the league - and showed toughness when in a hole that deep. Perhaps the 49ers defense shifted with that much of a lead but it still looked like a tough D to me.

That counts for a lot going into the playoffs - and the loss will increase the fire in the belly that much more more the playoffs, ensuring that weaknesses are not overlooked as they sometimes are following a win.

All of these things will serve the team better in the playoffs, perhaps even better than a close win would have

This is a serious question. You'll likely take offense, but none is intended:

Do you know anything at all about football, or are you brand new to watching it/learning about it?

The patriots only scored 3 points in the first half!

If this was a high scoring game for all 4 quarters i would agree that it hurt cost them the game.

The brady interception ended in no points.....The defense let an old randy moss go over the top and made Kaepernick look like a 6 year vet.

The defense was suppose to be improved. The patriots special teams and defense cost them the game.

Ok, your post would seem to say "Yes, I'm brand new to the game of football, and I have no idea what's going on during the games". In the interest of being sure, though, I'll ask again:

I think that's the point, though - how often do the Patriots commit four turnovers?

Colin Kaepernick 14/25 216 yards and 4 touchdowns. That's all you need to know, unless you're ******* prophet and predicted he would throw 4 touchdowns.

The patriots nullified the turnovers when they tied it up only for the defense to give it right up. There was still time for the patriots to win that game if the defense held and bill didn't go for it on 4th and 2.

ps i don't respond to ignorant ******* questions:rocker:

...you do realize that the Patriots offense didn't score any points off of those turnovers, correct?
