On Paper, Kaepernick Move Puzzling

From your mouse to the football gods' ears!!

The 9ers QBs get sacked a lot and from the SF Democrat sports page:

"The offensive line does not block well on obvious passing downs, and Greg Roman, John Morton and Jim Harbaugh haven’t figured out how to work around the bad pass protection. The 49ers’ best third down option right now is to let Kaepernick scramble and make a play."

49ers Week 14 grades: Coaching

This 49ers team is growing less impressive the more I read about them.

So the Pats strategy is to contain Kaepenick and take Gore out of the equation?

Its certainly a big risk, but not as puzzling once I learned that their OL was 28th in the league in BOTH, giving up sacks and getting holding penalties. It makes a lot more sense now. The kid is the best rushing QB threat not named RGIII, and is completing his passes at a 63% rate and has only one pick.

Clearly Harbaugh had decided that he was going to be the Niner's QB going forward, and evidently he'd seen enough during practice and when Smith went down, to make him believe he could trust him. He HAD to do something to try and mitigate his pass blocking woes, or it would eventually catch up with him in the playoffs. Kaepernick's athletic skill set was one way to do it.

Bad luck for Smith, and certainly would seem to be unfair. But I doubt he'll have trouble finding a job next season. There are a lot of teams in this league that would be happy with f a QB who has the resume of A. Smith. He's not a great QB, but even "just" good ones are hard to find

Cam Newton?

I think you 're getting a tad carried away.

It seems pretty straight forward. Get the Forty-Whiners into 3rd and long, and blitz up the middle while setting the edge.

This could look like the Dolphins game where the defense took care of business.

Its not about Newton really, but about the offense that they are running down in Carolina. That offense includes some spread option elements. Its probably the closest thing to what Tebow excelled at when he was in college that exists in the NFL. So, assuming he stays a QB, where else would be better for him.

In Carolina he could fill a useful role as a legitimate back up who could come in if Newton get hurts, and run the same offense, with a minimum of disruption. Do you really think that Kirk Cousins is going to be running what they give RGIII? He'll have plays that reflect his skill.

Hey, its not ideal, but at least it makes some sense. No one is ever going to give him a real shot to be starter now The ONLY way he'll ever get that opportunity is as a backup to a QB that gets hurt. But as I said, the media disruption that accompanies him, would make him difficult to bring to any team even if he became a more effective passer. The logistics are too hard. You have to give him the right offense. You would have change what you are looking for in your offensive personnel. You'd have to find a back up with similar skills. That's a lot to put up with, as well as Tebowmainia.

Ironically, the only organization that could probably deal with the accompanying noise that comes with Tebow, would be the Pats.....but why would they. They really have no place for him. They are set at QB, set at TE, and don't use a FB. That's strike three for Tebow in NE.

Forgot about the blitzing. Maybe we will see more Mayo up the center tonight.
