Goodell says playoffs could expand to 14 or 16 teams

I hate Goodell more on a daily basis. Of all the tragic damage he has done to the NFL and its fans, this change could be his greatest crime.

Horrible idea.

I'd be ok with extending the number of games and weeks by introducing a round robin like round for the divisional round, which would actually really help decide the stronger teams who would play in the Superbowl, lessening the luck factor.

But this does the opposite. This means we are now going to allow a bunch of mediocre teams to get in and add more single elimination games, hoping some scrub gets lucky and makes it to the Superbowl. This just increase the luck factor for bad teams even more. Teams who play inconsistent during the regular season, can exploit this and might not give it their all in the regular season in order to eliminate injuries and get on a streak late in the year.

Way to cheapen the tournament even further and erode the benefit of consistently winning teams.

It works in the NBA because they have a best of 7 format, so the weaker team is HIGHLY unlikely to get lucky 4 times in a row, in each round.

Unless your name is Lebron and the commish is hell bent on getting you your first Ring

The stupid greed that kills.

The only thing that truly distinguishes the NFL from the MLB and NBA is that nearly every single game is as important as a playoff game. If average and below average teams can make the actual playoffs, then these season games lose a great deal of their edge... the players lose their edge too, and so do their teams.

No change is not conservative--it's radical and right.

Lawyers screw up everything.

I wish Goodell would just go away at this point.

Between this hairbrained idea and the 18 game season idiocy it seems as if he is trying to kill the sport.

Run your franchise intelligently and correctly, you will have success as the league as currently constituted.

Run your team like a media whoring crackhouse of deviants and criminals, squirt into the playoffs like a fat slob with the runs and go beserk pandering to the lowest common denominator demographic, splashing your face and your big mouth in every media outlet nationwide,...THIS is what you'll get if this moronic idea is ever implemented.....the 6-10 NY Rats in the AFC Championship game...of course Goodell wants this, it's the only way he can hope to realize the dream he and his behind the scenes billionaire puppeteers have of a NY/NY Super Bowl. He tried destroying the Patriots...he attempted top dismantle New Orleans. Everything he does is NY centric strategic wise.

Tagliabue's decision speaks volumes about what HE and others in the NFL pantheon think about ol' Rog the Cyclops-dell. The gig is up...dump this moron...eliminate the position of Commissioner...compartmentalize the league into relevant sections that answer to a commission of owners.

The Reign Of Error must come to an end.

Goodell said that the owners “teed up” the issue of expanding the playoffs from 12 to 14 or 16 teams, and that the discussions will continue in the coming months.

What a horrible horrible decision/thought by a equally horrible person

Some you people are getting truly ridiculous. The article you quoted even says the idea came from the owners. Yet all you can say is "Goodell! Goodell! Goodell!"

You people are being played so well by the owners it's not even funny. By knee-jerking about Goodell you let the owners off the hook and thus increase the likelihood of this playoff travesty coming to fruition.

How the hell could you have 7 teams in each conference in the playoffs anyway? What would that bracket be like?

Goodell:"Dah, well ya see, one team would get a super Bye! Den we add another playoff round all together called da Super AFC Championship!"

Wildcard Round:

7. vs. 4.
5. vs. 6

Divisional Round:

2. (bye) vs. lower seed
3. (bye) vs. higher seed

AFCCG:

winner vs. winner

Super AFCCG:

1. (Superbye) vs. AFCCG winner

This would be similar to NBA where most of the fans would only tune in when the playoffs are set to begin, i mean why waste your time when you know that half the league will be playing in the playoffs

Consider a scenario where a 5-11 team for example Jags get into the playoffs and end up winning the SB defeating a 15-1 Packers...... terrible terrible idea

Does he spend all day thinking of ways to ruin the sport? I seriously wish someone would drop a piano on him.

Presumably you'd have a play-in game like the NCAA does when they have 65 teams selected.

Four division winners and three wildcards. Bottom two wildcards play each other, then the remaining six teams do what they do today.

And if the league was willing to drop the off week between the conference championships and the SB, you could do this w/o having to move the SB even later into Feb.

All that said, it's a terrible idea and things should stay the way they are now.

#1 seed gets a first round bye
2 v 7
3 v 6
4 v 5

that's how you see it...and "knee jerking"??? are you a human being or a bot? you been around since 2007 or what?...here's the clip...I read it differently than YOU do, but I will not insult YOUR comprehension of this very limited blurb..

At the conclusion of the league’s quarterly ownership meeting in Dallas, Commissioner Roger Goodell dusted off a concept that rears its head from time to time. that reads like HE "dusted off" the concept near the end of the meetings and PRESENTED IT to the owners

Expanded playoffs.

Goodell said that the owners “teed up” the issue of expanding the playoffs from 12 to 14 or 16 teams, and that the discussions will continue in the coming months.the owners teed it up after the issue was brought up by Goodell at the end of the meetings and agreed to talk FURTHER...at FUTURE meetings...if this was THEIR idea they would have tackled it DURING THIS SESSION....they(the owners) have charged Goodell with finding new revenue streams for their league...THIS is one of HIS concepts

The use of 16 playoff teams would eliminate the bye weeks, requiring the top two seeds in each conference to play in the wild-card round, which would become a quarterfinal round in the AFC and NFC.

It also suggests that, with a 16-team playoff field, perhaps the NFL will eventually decide to fill vacancies in L.A. and London via expansion.the owners want expansion...Goodell has been tasked to make it so...this has been on the table since HE took over in 2006...this idiotic "dusted off" idea was his idea at the start, one they nixed back then and one he NOW has brought back to be "teed up". Of course the owners want more revenue streams, but THIS idea is all Goodell's and has been all along.

Goodell isn't actually a lawyer. He's a businessman from an impressive family who didn't even have enough brains to go to an Ivy League school or get an MBA.

it will be approved since the NFL will make so much more $$...sooner or later people..greedy ******* *******s

Just **** off already, Roger.

i personally hate expansion in all sports, and i hate the inclusion of nearly half the damn league in each sport, in playoffs

i prefer the older days when it was more special to make the playoffs......

expansion and the inclusion of more teams in the playoffs has watered down the sports world

bob costas out!

Goodell and the owners version of the NFL: No kick offs, the QB can stand there or run without ever being hit, defenders cannot ever stop the receiver from catching the ball, no helmets can ever touch another player. So how about every team makes the playoffs too? How about there is no SB winner and every team get's a "we all won!" Stuart Smalley Trophy? Or better yet, how about the owners sit down in the offseason and draw up what teams should be in the playoffs to maximize geography, television ratings, drama, with a positive and uplifting story that touches the general public's feelings (like a Hallmark christmas movie)?
I realize this newest suggestion for expanded playoff entries is small, however, where does this stop? RG and the owners are trying to take the great sport of pro football and turn it into a orchestrated, directed, sanitized television studio production.

The playoffs should be for the best of the NFL with a decent team or two that slides in by the skin of their teeth. Any more spots for playoffs and now there will be joke teams that will slide in through gross mediocrity. There will be a 7-9 team with starting QBs that have no business playing playoff football. Whatever.....

no matter how we, the fans , feel about it...change WILL come. Better come to terms with that concept. My fear is THIS moron will be the chief architect. That is why I, as a fan, am all for the elimination of a "commissioner" in favor of a board of directors...and the departmentalization of the league into five or six arms, each specifically charged with overseeing specific facets of league business. Let all league business and issues be worked up and presented by group think and let the owners make decisions at board meetings as necessary.

This Uber-Fuhrer act by Goodell needs to be mothballed like leather helmets and metal cleats.

Wow..doesn't anybody see how this can work!! First...cut the season back to 14 games and only 2 preseason games....at the end of the 14 game season......The 4 divisional leaders get a bye...then the rest of the league plays a wildcard round...then line them up in numerical seeding and bracket them out.it will create office pools...sweet 16's..great eights....TV Revenues up the yang.lol....seriously Rodgers..it's a stupid idea.....you threw it up against the wall and nothing stuck....:bricks:
