PFT: Josh McDaniels a HC Candidate for 2013?

I still don't understand why Josh didn't try like hell to get Cassell into Denver. Getting rid of Culter makes since because he's a crybaby and a negative leader, but how did Josh think he could get anywhere with Kyle Orton?

Look at Cassell, his only good seasons were with competent OC's (McDaniels and Charlie Weis). People still want to give Alex Smith time to develop because he never had the same OC twice in his career until this year. But Matt Cassell has been in the exact same position and people want to run him out of KC.

I'd hate to lose Josh again - although I would get a free lunch from a Rams fan who thought I was nuts for worrying about it last week. I wonder who would replace him. As we tend to promote from within I can only come up with Chad O'Shea as the unnamed, defacto OC that we often seem to do.

I’m glad to have McDaniels back at OC for the Patriots, but realistically isn’t he being judged by how well Brady and Co. do? And for that matter, how well Brady does has a lot to do with the play of the OL – something McDaniels isn’t really responsible for - that's Dante.

Give McDaniels Brady, Gronkowski, Hernandez, Welker and a good RB or two with a decent OL and he’ll be a great Head Coach.

Heck - anyone would be.

Give him a mediocre team and let him bring in more mediocre players (his track record in Denver wasn't exactly impressive), and you’ll have a mediocre to bad team.

Even his move to bring in Brandon Lloyd hasn’t wow’d anyone – though that was a pretty affordable low risk move in the first place and with 50 catches it's not like Lloyd has been a bust on team with tons of other offensive options - he just hasn't been the deep threat we were hoping for.

Give 'em the unibomber and sign Crennel.

McDaniels deserves a second chance, but he'd better have learned some lessons about ownership.

I think McDaniels would be nuts to jump at the first job offered to him again. Give it time--the Pats are going to be strong for the foreseeable future, so it's not like he'll lose his luster to other teams. Wait for the right situation! If he goes to Cleveland, Jax, etc., do you really think he'll be successful for years and years? No way. Stay put, Josh.

Cos there are only 32 head coaching positions in the nfl. You take what you can.

Why, so he can fail and 2nd time and destroy any future as a HC?

i think josh will wait it out some more years b4 he decides to give it another shot

but in cleveland with an up and coming team, and a rookie QB, and say Vince does go there? it would be a very good opportunity

Is Cassel really any better than Kyle Orton at this point?

Kyle Orton was never successful (that I can remember anyway). Cassel, with a competent OC, guided the Pats to 11-5 and won the Chiefs the AFC West at 10-6 with a 27/7 TD-INT ratio. He can play in the right offense.

If Brady were to retire and Mallet wasn't ready, I would gladly take Matt Cassel as our QB again.

McD has done a great job this year - excellent playcalling - its great watching he run game flourish.

I think he'd be silly to jump ship into another HC gig so quickly - I actually think he made alot of good personnel decisions in Denver (Cutler and Marshall can destroy a locker-room in no-time) however perception around the league could be different.

Another year or two under Belichikc could only benefir the young man.

Possibly, but I hope not. Patriots offense is at its best with him as their coordinator.

Long-term, I hope his plan is to stick around and become Belichick's eventual successor. In Denver, though, I think that poor talent evaluation and a bad GM essentially did him in. If he goes to a team with a good GM, he'll be fine.

Yeah, I'm guessing the Pats HC-in-waiting theory is right. But since talent evaluation is clearly an issue for him, I wouldn't be surprised to see Belichick retire as a coach but hold on to his GM powers for a few years. Belichick seems to see a lot of fluidity between the front office and the sidelines for others, why not himself? That would be a potentially interesting situation.

I really don't believe Josh has what it takes to be a successful head coach.

Same goes for Mangina

I don't think he will go at the end of the season!

Still think he may be being matured to become BB's successor!

That's what I'm hoping too, but he may be eager to get a head coaching job right now. Would not be surprised to see Patricia or Pepper replace BB (in 100 years :).

I tend to agree with you on both counts. Both are smart guys, and both are/were good coordinators. But it takes more than that. Only time will tell for sure, though.

I'd like him to become the successor to Mr. BB! Or at least for him to become assistant HC for the Pats.

There will be a lot of jobs open up and McDaniels' name is going to be mentioned along with the other "usual suspects". However I will guarantee that he's going no where for the following reasons (some of which have already been mentioned)

Don't forget one of the most egregious sins that Mangini committed was that when BB gave him the DC job, Eric promised him that he'd stay a couple of years.....so not only did he take the Jet job against BB's wishes, try to steal patriot personnel and information, he broke his word to stay until his replacement could be developed. I have always thought that THAT was the one who really pissed Bill off the most.

First and foremost, when BB rehired McDaniels he did it with the condition that he stay for at least a few years. BB is all about continuity. He had BOB set to be next in line when McDaniel left last time. There is no BOB in line now, so BB would have made sure that Josh stay around for a while.

Secondly the concept of stability for his family. They where happy in NE and where here for a while. The last 3 years have be tough for them. First the animosity they had to deal with in Denver, and then the move to St Louis. Now he's back "home". I don't think he wants to move his family again so soon.

Third - for every reason that makes the Cleveland job makes sense, (he from Ohio, he knows Lombardi, etc) there are 2 equally compelling reasons that make Josh toxic in Cleveland.

BTW- The current HC is making a compelling case for another year at least.

No folks, Josh isn't going anywhere....though that won't stop the rumors
