just watching every play that Anthony Spencer was in. He did real good playing against the LTs. He's got good initial burst at the snap, and seems to be able to use his hands to disengage.

Moises didn't seem to do much at all. From all the bad things I keep reading about him, I wouldn't be shocked if the guy drops. Unlike a lot of players, if he gets skipped by a 3-4 team, it could be a long ways before another 3-4 team comes up in the draft order. I wouldn't fall off my chair if he falls to the 3rd round.

please let us know any other things you noticed while watching the tape - about ANY players. Thanks.

What bad things have you read? What do you think of him overall as a Pats player?

I watched the Senoir Bowl as well. The best player on the field that day was that DE Carriker without a doubt. That guy dominated in pass rushing and run defense. Nobody in the secondaries stood out to me. Merriweather was at least near the ball along with that other kid Coy. Griffin the safety from Texans really didnt do anything of note in my opinion.

I have read it a couple of times on some of the different sites. One I can remember off the top of my head is the link Box O Rocks posted on the Senior Bowl from the Lions perspective.

Spencer did good, Adam Carriker, Amobi Okoye dominated. Jay Moore did real good. The DL of the North dominated the OL of the South. David Harris (ILB) did real good. He's got good speed, which means he could put on some lbs and still be quick enough. Paul Polluszny looks like the same size as Rodney Harrison. He will have to bulk up. My favorite, Stewart Bradley was in coverage a lot (not in T.V. screen), so real hard to tell. Bradley's first play in the game he got blocked by the FB, and Jay Moore (playing on Stewart's side) got taken out, so that was a bad play. Another run play up the middle, Stewart read it, and hit the RB for a small loss. So good play for him.

Merriweather was without a doubt the best safety. He was at the ball almost every time. If hadn't stomped on somebody, he would be a top 15 pick.

One more thing, I could have swore that Bradley was lined up (playing zones) across a WR. That would be real good film for BB to watch.

i thought he was the guy who took off his helmet and hit someone with it...if not..who was that?

And even the stomping might have been excused if it weren't for the separate gun incident....

no, Merriweather gets confused for helmet guy. Merriweather was in the scene though putting his spikes to "not so good use."

I don't even really blame him too much for the gun incident... some bunch of gansters were doing a drive by shooting... If I had a licensed gun, and a bunch of SOB were shooting at a house -- I would defend myself.

Unfortunately, its a fact of life (that people don't like to talk about) that the gangs in L.A. are fighting along racial lines (Hispanic vs. African-Americans) ... and there are gang fights in Miami too. So sad, but true.

Senior Bowl - North Practice Day One

- TE Clark Harris (Rutgers) working against Adam Carriker in line drills, while eventually thrown down by Carriker, he held the block for a 3 mississippi count before Carriker had him down and could begin his rush.

- In a 9 on 7 scrimmage, a hole was opened with LT Levi Brown (Penn State) turning LDE Anthony Spencer (Purdue) outside while RB Brian Leonard (Rutgers) led into the ‘b’ gap and cleared OLB Stewart Bradley (Nebraska) out of the hole pancaking him. LG Josh Beekman (Boston College) chipped LDE Brandon Mebane (California), leaving C Dan Mozes (West Virginia) to wrestle with him, before moving to the next level and blocking MLB David Harris (Michigan). OLB Paul Posluzny (Penn State) was unblocked and filled the hole behind Beekman for the tackle on RB Tony Hunt (Penn State). RDT Quinn Pit**** (Ohio State) fought laterally splitting the RG/RT double-team to get in on the play - he also prevented the RG Doug Datish (Ohio State) from handing him off to the RT Marshall Yanda (Iowa) which meant the G could not get out to block Posluzny. TE Scott Chandler (Iowa) had a good block on RDE Victor Abiamiri. - Analysis: Harris made the play, getting outside Beekman, preventing Hunt from getting into the hole created by the blocks, and turning him back inside where Posluzny and Pit****’s pursuit could make the play. Leonard won the leverage battle with Bradley, getting under his pads. Harris held up well to Beekman’s block, sealing the hole. Hunt hesitated in the hole, but was still able to generate positive yardage against Posluzny’s tackle. Harris, Leonard, and Pit**** made the strongest positive impressions, Brown and Chandler get positives for good blocks. Hunt wasn’t able to bounce outside, with his weight (239), he basically was a smaller version of Heath Evans.

- 1 on 1 drills: WR Aundrae Allison (East Carolina) and WR Brandon Myles (West Virginia) look like decent possession receivers while WR Jason Hill (Washington State) showed some quicks and speed. CB Daymeion Hughes (California), CB Josh Wilson (Maryland), and CB Leon Hall (Michigan) all looked decent in coverage.

- Line drills: DE Adam Carriker (Nebraska) beat the LG Doug Datish (Ohio State) inside getting his hands on the G to steer him. DE Jay Moore (Nebraska) beat LT Ryan Harris (Notre Dame) with a good straight arm on a speed rush outside. RT Marshall Yanda (Iowa) won against DE Victor Abiamiri’s (Notre Dame) bull rush. DT Brandon Mebane (California) beat OC/OG Dan Mozes (West Virginia) with a good power move. Mozes won the second battle, but got knocked down doing it. DT Amobi Okoye (Louisville) was managed by OC/OG Josh Beekman (Boston College) twice in a row. DT David Patterson (Ohio State) split with OC/OG Dan Mozes (WV). DE Lamarr Woodley (Michigan) was handled by LT Levi Brown (Penn State), quite easily the second time on the inside move. Woodley did show good quickness and speed on the edge, Brown just did a great job of staying with him. DE Anthony Spencer (Purdue) stressed RT James Marten (Boston College) on a speed move, but Martin was able to get his hands on him enough to knock him off balance and buy himself time to recover and cut the inside corner to drive him past the “QB”. Spencer had the speed, but Marten’s hand punch saved his QB. DT Amobi Okoye beat OG/OC Manuel Ramirez (Texas Tech) with a spin move, Ramirez shook it iff and owned him on the next try. Ramirez is a OT moving inside and hasn’t played much from a 3-point stance in TT’s offense.

- scrimmage: 1st play was a 3-step drop/quick out overthrown by QB Drew Stanton (Michigan State). Anthony Spencer was easily handled by Levi Brown. Stewart Bradley was at WLB and showed good reaction reading the pocket and trying to get outside to help the CB Marcus McCauley (Fresno State) who was off allowing WR Aundrae Allison (East Carolina) to get open quickly.

2nd play, this was the same play run above handing off to Tony Hunt behind the left side. Brown handled Spencer again. Leonard handled Stewart who filled well but is losing the leverage battle. Beekman chipped Mebane and drove Harris outside, but Harris’ positioning again forced Hunt to turn back inside and meet Posluzny coming over to fill. S Josh Gattis (Wake Forest) was playing deep and came into the picture very late. CB Leon Hall did a better job on coming up in run support from the RCB spot (Offense’s right).

NFL Network wants us to look at John Gruden’s face and not the action on the field, so they have an inset window on Gruden taking up half my screen.

3rd play, RB Kolby Smith (Louisville) was offset right with Brian Leonard at Tailback. Stanton and Leonard made a nice play action fake allowing Stanton to roll out and hit Smith flaring into the flat. Stewart Bradley was keying on Smith and went with him - though at that point the coverage looked a lot like John Gruden’s face.

4th play, DE Jay Moore working against LT Ryan Harris got pressure on the QB. DE Lamarr Woodley was able to beat TE Clark Harris inside, coming free on 3 mississppi. Coverage upfield was apparently good since Stanton finally went to his dump-off RB Tony Hunt at 5 mississippi, Hunt dropped it.

5th play, DB Eric Weddle (Utah) was up on the line inside the WR, he read the run and went in to take on RB/FB Brian Leonard. TE Scott Chandler (Iowa) locked it up with DE Jay Moore, while DE/DT Adam Carriker was doubled inside by the LT/LG. Those three defenders shut down the left side, leaving the LBs picking their noses. The handoff was fumbled killing the play, but Hunt would have needed to try and cut back right for any hope of positive yardage. The second set of LBs appears to be SLB Prescott Burgess (Michigan), MLB H.B. Blades (Pittsburgh), and WLB Boo McLee (West Virginia), Blades was the only one who seemed to know what he was doing, and he was late.

6th play, DE/DT Adam Carriker beat LG Doug Datish outside and practically took the handoff in the backfield.

7th play , 3-step drop, play action, WR flare easily read and handled by CB Marcus McCauley. DT Brandon Mebane drove the C (Mozes I think) back almost into the QB.

8th play, handoff to Leonard at tailback going off-tackle. The RT Marshall Yanda rode RDE Victor Abiamiri downfield and outside. RDT Mebane was doubled by RG Datish and C Mozes, LT Levi Brown blocked down on LDT Patterson and TE Clark Harris stood up LDE Anthony Spencer. MLB David Harris beat WLB Posluzney to Leonard, meeting him at the line for what would have been a one or two yard gain. Unless Posluzny was at MLB and Harris WLB, I can’t explain why he was out of the play. SLB Stewart stayed home on the backside playing his responsibility. Gruden lined up TE Chandler as a WR to block the CB.

9th play, DE Anthony Spencer beat LT Levi Brown outside. The pass was completed over the middle to TE Clark Harris tightly covered by S Josh Gattis. Real world, QB Troy Smith might have got the ball off if he stepped up (he had room), but more likely he was strip sacked by Spencer. They showed a replay centered on MLB David Harris who was sucked in by the play action and failed to read the TE releasing inside. SLB Bradley gave the TE a chuck, then keyed on RB Kolby Smith coming through and flaring into the flat, MLB Harris wound up doubling on Smith instead of dropping into an underneath zone which would have taken the TE away.

10th play (fumbled snap, replayed again), RB Kolby Smith running play to the right side - almost a stretch play. TE Clark Harris blocked down on RDE Lamarr Woodley who threw him off, but then ran into RG Manuel Ramirez who pulled outside and the RT blocked down on the RDT before releasing and “holding” SLB Prescott Burgess. Brian Leonard led and blocked SS Eric Weddle. LDE Jay Moore was unblocked, but kept his backside containment instead of haring off on the chase. LDT/DE Adam Carriker beat his man and was chasing from behind. Weddle strung the play out, allowing Woodley and MLB Blades to get off their blocks and combine for a tackle at the LOS.

11th play, LT Ryan Harris was barely able to keep LDE Jay Moore off the QB. RDE Lamarr Woodley came into the picture about 3.5 mississippi on a 5-step drop.

The camera focus is now narrowly on the QB and nobody else is in the picture to evaluate.

Closing soliquey from NFL network commentators: Leon Hall, Amobi Okoye and Levi Brown looked the best.

Rewatching this using slo-mo and tuning out the drivel from the commentators laughing at Gruden, the player who had the greatest impact was S Eric Weddle (Utah) followed closely by the man struggling to block him RB Brian Leonard (Rutgers). The two of them just made plays and showed they both have good trench warfare skills.

Summary:
- RB Brian Leonard (6’1” 224) good blocking, though he had trouble with Weddle. He executed well across the board.
- LT Levi Brown (6’6” 323) was beaten once by Anthony Spencer, but looked very good overall.
- TE Clark Harris (6’6” 257) struggled a bit with Lamarr Woodley, but did well overall.
- TE Scott Chandler (6’7” 268) also looked good blocking.

- S Eric Weddle (5’11” 201) solid job in run support, no coverage opportunities observed.
- DE Adam Carriker (6’6” 292) dominating player.
- DE Jay Moore (6’5” 276) looked good, may need to get stronger, but looked good nonetheless.
- DE Lamarr Woodley (6’2” 269) had flashes in the scrimmage, wasn’t doing as well in one-on-ones.
- DE Anthony Spencer (6’3” 266) was much the same as Woodley.
- MLB David Harris (6’2” 239) great against the run, completely out of place on the one pass I saw.
- OLB Stewart Bradley (6’4” 256) filled quickly against the run, but was handily blocked by Leonard, showed good coverage and awareness in pass defense.

Senior Bowl North practice day two:

- 1 on 1 WR & CB: CB Marcus McCauley (Fresno State) and CB Josh Wilson (Maryland) are very good in press coverage. CB Dameion Hughes (California) looks like someone who can fit into the Pats’ system with some coaching. SS Eric Weddle (Utah) was holding once in CB drills, he wasn’t comfortable with press coverage, but despite not getting a jam stayed with the WR in good position. CB Leon Hall (Michigan) looked good, he’ll be long gone before #24. SS Aaron Rouse (VA Tech) has raw talent that needs coaching, the knock on him is consistency, I could see him blossom working with OTIS and Collier, with Rodney to mentor him. SS Josh Gattis (Wake Forest) looked like a fish out of water in CB drills. CB Tanard Jackson (Syracuse) showed potential. The WRs...Brandon Myles (West Virginia) and Aundre Allison (East Carolina) helped themselves, Paul Williams (Fresno State) wasn’t bad.

- OL/DL 1 on 1: DE Jay Moore (Nebraska) beat OT James Martin (BC) with outside speed. Martin won against the inside spin move on the next go. LT Levi Brown (Penn State) beat DE Anthony Spencer (Purdue) on an outside speed. DT Amobi Okoye (Louisville) is very quick inside. OT Ryan Harris (Notre Dame) beat DE Anthony Spencer’s inside move.

- 11 on 11: 1st play, run behind the C, the LBs were flip-flopped with Stewart Bradley (Nebraska) at WLB and Paul Posluzney (Penn State) at SLB. SS Aaron Rouse was on the line over the TE. The LT went out to block Stewart who made him miss and did a nice job off coming up in backside contain after DE Anthony Spencer bit inside and was blocked very nicely by FB Brian Leonard. MLB David Harris (Michigan) overplayed to the outside and was out of position, SLB Paul Posluzney actually came up inside like a MLB and would have forced a fumble on RB Kolby Smith of Louisville. SS Rouse actually wound up setting the edge and doing a decent job.

2nd play: QB fell down.

3rd play: pass, WR Allison beat CB McCauley with a buttonhook and nice run after catch. WLB Stewart diagnosed the play very quickly. Spencer was handled easily by the LT.

4th play: run inside, DE Adam Carriker (Nebraska) beat the TE inside and made the tackle in the backfield on RB Brian Leonard (Rutgers). DE Jay Moore allowed himself to get sealed inside by RB Kolby Smith (Louisville). LT Levi Brown went out and sealed WLB Boo McLee (West Virginia) inside.

5th play: Roll out to get away from Carriker who was double-teamed on the backside. DE Jay Moore was bounced by LT Brown and handed off to RB Kolby Smith who stayed with him as Moore trailed the QB underneath - I’m not sure if that was his assignment or he couldn’t get off the block to rush the pass or the scrimmage rules didn’t allow him to rush. The ball was thrown away anyway.

6th play: Carriker blew up another run inside.

Great write-up. I watched these practices and found Spencer more impressive than you may have. I thought his combination of power and speed seemed rare, and he mixes in an unusual amount of guile for a young guy, setting his opponent up from play to play, inside and out. He has a very nice inside rip move, and his impressive lower body strength allows him to gain leverage on speed rushes. For a 260 lb player he holds up strength wise well vs 300+ lb tackles at the senior bowl, which reinforces his unusual 16.5 tackles for loss against the run last season. He appears capable of setting the edge, maybe even as a rookie. We share a fondness to Banta Cain (although you more than me) but leave the door open for Spencer. He could be a high quality player. Watching the first two practices, I'm hedging towards calling Spencer a better 4-3 prospect than 3-4. The other thing to be pondering with Spencer currently grading out a late 1st/early 2nd on most lists is the transition time to develop him as a 3-4 OLB. I was high on the DE the 49ers took last year (brain flatulence kicking in) because he had played some up on his feet, I don't know that Spencer did that at all and Gruden apparently didn't have him work with the LB coach at all the way Nolan had Moses (Georgia) and Pittmann (LSU) do after Thursday practice. Accursed Tampa-2 coaches.

I think Spencer will make a very solid 4-3 DE. In a 4-3 he could probably impact immediately, similar to Mark Anderson of the Bears as a rookie: a situational pass rusher until his complete game rounds into form in year 2. I could be wrong, but I see rare aggression and a love of (on-field) violence in Spencer. That is the rarest of commodities, and one of the reasons I would be happy to see him in a Pat uniform. As far as transition time.. to become a complete 3-4 OLB I wouldn't expect any player to become that until year 3. But he could still impact situationally enough to justify late rd 1, I think, and provide some insurance in the event Vrabel/Colvin/Banta Cain suffer injuries...
Jay Moore is another very solid prospect. I like Gattis. He struggled man to man vs WRs but he has a ferocious mentality, loves to hit, provides leadership, and has the innate athleticism (60 meter hurdles champ) to develop his man-on-man skills. Sometimes the senior bowl can be a bit misleading. For instance, although I recognize Bradley's obvious talent, I question his lack of on-field production during the season. Granted he was recovering from injury, but still... Otherwise Bradley looks like the best ILB candidate in the draft (except Siler, maybe, and Harris possibly).

The combine is going to be very important (especially agility tests) for DE conversion prospects.

What kind of numbers are you looking for from Bradley?

He ranked 2nd on the team with 42 solo tackles, and when combined with 33 assists ranked #1 in tackles. He had 4 TFL, 1 sack, 3 QB hurries, 2 FF, and 1 pass defensed. As you noted he was coming back from an ACL tear, his 2005 numbers were pretty impressive before the injury.

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/playerDetail.jsp?yr=2006&org=463&player=34

I believe he also led the North team in tackles for the Senior Bowl too...seems pretty consistent that way.

I'm finally getting around to rewatching the Senior Bowl and working the tape to get a better picture of who did what.

Tony Hunt does look good running, Vermeil notes he needs to be more patient on a couple runs. Hunt also had a couple good receptions, though he did let Meriweather strip the ball on one catch where the Officials ruled him down (replay would have overturned that call).

Brian Leonard just keeps doing things to make me fall in love with his play, his blocking and short yardage running were often the engine that made the offense move. On two seperate short yardage runs he knocked Willis backward and Buster Davis backward. On the North's last score, he sealed Willis inside, standing him on his heals and sliding off to get the OLB sealing them both inside. On the first TD he sealed the OLB inside (Beekman pulled behind him and pancaked Willis). There was also his 4th and 7 catch and run for a first down on the opening drive where he juked a couple defenders.

Anthony Spencer continues to look like a 4-3 DE, I just don't see him as an OLB.

Tony Ugoh working against Spencer seems to be winning most of the one-on-one battles. For a guy who has knocks on his pass blocking he isn't doing too badly.

Beekman stood out amongst interior linemen and showed a nasty attitude, he did have a late hit that would have been minus 15 yds in the Pros, but he moved well if the Pats want an OC/OG.

Griffin, Josh Gattis, and Kevin Payne stood out as Safeties. Payne playing back as a FS, Gattis at both, and Griffin up on the line as a SS. Tenard Jackson, Weddle, and Aaron Rouse didn't look too bad either.

Hall had a couple nice plays at CB. Josh Wilson was all over making plays. Michael Coe was challenged a lot by the North, he had good coverage even though there were a couple receptions over him, he did grab the only interception on a nicely covered route. Jonathan Wade looked pretty good in coverage for a raw track kid, he got burned by Hill's catch in the back of the end zone, but he's worth consideration to develop behind Hobbs and Samuel.

Willis fans, I think I saw one play at the line of scrimmage where he finished off what the DT started. His plays were upfield in pursuit. He did get bumped out to play some SLB reps in the second half and looked good in coverage on one play. When an OL got to him he was done. I can't say how he did in his Ole Miss games, but he looks like he'd be better running free behind a couple big bottoms.

Buster Davis made plays on the line of scrimmage, he took advantage of his height to duck under blocks by OL and go meet RBs on the line. He did have trouble finding the ball in traffic, but if he got a sniff he was a little devil fighting to get there.

Harris looked very good against the run, I can see him as a two-down ILB who might develop into more with good coaching and hard work. He made a nice open field tackle in KR coverage and was a wedge buster.

Burgess did not look comfortable playing off the line, he made his plays when he was up on the line at SLB. His weigh-in says 6'4" 240, if he's there late on day two he may be worth a flyer to test as an OLB, he's not making it inside.

Bradley needs to hit the weights. He lost the leverage battle to Le'ron McLain on an outside run, though he gets points for staying with it and never giving up. He looked good in coverage and he showed some really good instincts for finding the ball or recognizing routes. They flipped him to WLB for a spell in the second half and had him covering a WR in the slot. He had one TFL cleaning up a play busted up by the DL, and he filled well when running lanes opened up in front of him. I saw him toss Joe Staley aside on one play when Staley went out to get him, he needs work with his hands and strength, but I continue to believe he'll be a good ILB with some work.

There were two surprises when you slow down the tape: Tony Taylor of Georgia was excellent in coverage and showed good run instincts. He'll make some 4-3 team a good OLB. Too bad his 40 was so slow at the Combine, if he can knock off 3 tenths of a second he might be worth consideration as a SS.

From a Patriots' perspective the player of interest (and one they reportedly visited with during the week) is Kevin "Boo" McLee (West Virginia) 6'1" 244. He started out at WLB but took SLB reps in the second half. He showed good coverage skills and did well against the run. His Pro-day results are poor for the 40, barely breaking 5 sec, but he has a good 3-cone and decent ss for a man his size. He looks like a prime UDFA target for camp fodder and a shot at the Practice Squad.

I recall reading some folks questioning Jay Moore of Nebraska since two of his sacks came when LT Joe Staley blocked down and gave him a clean shot at the QB. His third sack was earned and he showed some great hustle in his play, an example is the second snap he took, TE Joe Newton was outside him and cut his legs out in what would be a clip anywhere but on the line of scrimmage, allowing RB Kenny Irons to get outside, Moore still jumped to his feet and ran him down from behind for the first hit that took him down.

With the exception of Abiamiri, the North D-line was outstanding and dominated the LOS making it very easy for the back seven. Abiamiri may show better if I focus on him and the blocking, but despite listing him as a possible 3-4 DE in week two of the build a draft board exercise, I don't think it's worth putting much stock in his chances as a Patriot. For the South, Anthony Johnson got props from Vermeil for disrupting plays and setting up tackles by his teammates. Kareem Brown was a Vermeil favorite, though I wasn't that impressed from what I could see. Both North O-lines did well for having so little time together.
