The End Of Kickoffs?

I would have a problem with giving the "kicking" team the ball on their own 30 for a 4th and 15. The way the refs throw ticky tack PI flags I would think the conversion rate would be much higher than an actual on-side kick.

Yeah, jus go 5 wide have everyone run deep routes then deliberately underthrow the ball and when the receiver runs into the DB running back towards the ball - PI automatic first down.

The Patriots have deferred and will punt off to start the game. :bricks:

Coming soon to a NFL field near you

* No more half time, instead the game will last 5 Quarters - So that the fans can quench their thirst for football

* Timeouts will last only for 5 seconds now - So that the fans can quench their thirst for football

* CB and Safety can only touch the WR or TE 5 yards after he has made the catch - So that fans can see more high scoring games

* No more red flags to be thrown by the coaches - This wastes the time of the general public

Wont be long before NFL loses its popularity thanks to Hitler Goodell

Just leave it the way it is. Removing kicksoff would take a lot of fun out of the game. What will they call opening weekend? Welcome to NFL Punt off 2013!

Good point. The rules would have to be changed so that a foul wasn't an automatic conversion.

Oh, wait -- you meant PI rather than roughing the punter. Well, my point still stands. ;)

How about Super Bowls? All the camera flashes are one of the most iconic things in sport!

Here comes the opening 4th & 15 of the Super Bowl!

The idea isn't necessarily horrible, but what's wrong with kickoffs? Are punts really safer plays? I mean, when a guy receives the ball on a kickoff he usually has at least a 10 yard buffer before players come flying at him. How many times do we see guys backpedalling and looking up to catch a punt, only to be absolutely destroyed by a gunner the second the ball touches his hands?

If Goodell wants to go around changing the way the sport is structured, start by doing away with PATs and coming up with something more exciting.

Scrap the PAT and you can either decline the 2 point conversion or go for the 2?

Good God, he's terrible.

might as well get rid of all the kicking.

all punting/kickoffs are replaced with the QB throwing the ball as far as he can wherever it stops is where the opposing team starts their drive.

It worked for us in first grade, it can work for the nfl.

School yard style mother lover.

Well that idea would give Ryan Mallett some use :p

Can't just scrap the PAT and leave only a 2pt conversion or nothing (i.e. a TD gets you either 6pt or 8pt) because that would affect the relationship of FGs to TDs.

I'd prefer one of the following:
  • TD is worth 7pt, and you have the option of going for a 1pt conversion (ball placed in the same spot it is placed for the 2pt conversion). (So the TD gets you either 7pt or 8pt). Though in the record books, to keep things comparable before and after the change they might need to still only give 6pt to the person who scored the TD and have the remaining point be a team point (like a "team rebound" in NBA stats). Or maybe give the point to the placekicker, unless a 1pt conversion is done, in which case both points are given to the person who scored the conversion.
  • TD is worth 6pt, option for 2pt conversion stays the same as it is now, but if you want to kick for 1pt, you spot the ball at the 13yd line (so a 30yd attempt) instead of at the 2.5yd line. Maybe even the 18 for a 35yd attempt.
  • Have both 1pt and 2pt non-kick conversions while getting rid of kick conversions. For a 1pt conversion put the ball at the half-yard line, or maybe even the 1-foot line. For a 2pt conversion leave at the 2.5yd line like we do now.

How about the PAT is done like in Rugby and the attempt is taken from a spot perpendicular to where the TD was scored and have no blockers.

So a deep bomb scored in the corner means a sideline attempt at the PAT.

Am I like the only one around here that has no problem with PATS? If you get rid of pats and replace them with conversations we're not going to have many tied games late or OT games. I don't think it's broken so no need to fix it in my opinion.

My problem with PATs is, like Belichick's problem with them, that they are too automatic and are thus an essentially meaningless play.

So either make them meaningful or get rid of them.

I think the easiest thing to do is simply spot the ball at the 18 for PATs so they would be 35yd attempts instead of 19.5yd attempts.

Of course PATs are broken. Show me an example of any point-scoring play in another sport that is converted 95+% of the time.

If Goodell thinks punts are safer than kickoffs, I trust him that far.

3rd and goal at the 1 yard line with Brady under center.
