More like time for the media drama queens to ease up. They are the ones that start all this nonsense then people that are bored at work or at home pick up on it and repeat it.

Lloyd has been a big improvement at that position from last year. I would be willing to bet he comes up with a clutch catch for us in a big game before all is said and done.

The thing is people's expectations of Brandon Lloyd were way off-base. He's never been a fast guy, he's never had the ability to threaten a defense deep. He's a strong receiver who struggles to get separation but can make tough catches on the sidelines. That's it. And that's who he has been. He's a complimentary piece, fans were thinking he'd be Reggie Wayne or Greg Jennings for this team. He isn't that kind of player. If he were, he wouldn't have signed a 3 year, 12 million dollars deal here.

The other half of the fanbase thought that since Lloyd was a #1 in STL, but would now presumably the 4th target behind (Wes, Gronk, Hernandez) that his stats would dip quite a bit.

Personally? I think he's doing just fine. He's a damn good 4th target. Defenses cannot just ignore him to double Gronk or Welker (like they could in 2011). If they do? Lloyd can take advantage. He's legit.

This is where I'll disagree. Defenses have been selling out to take away Welker/Gronk/Hernandez since day 1, and Lloyd hasn't shown he can make them pay yet.

I agree with the premise - and defended Lloyd as giving the Patriots more of a credible deep threat this year than last year even just a few weeks ago

But since that time his production - specifically his use/ability as a deep threat - hasn't changed. Of his 50 catches, half came in September and the other half have come in October, November and last week (December 1st) combined.

He's not added anymore deep catches to his resume either. Now I realize every game and every opponent is different and playcalling is situational, but I prefer to see a guy increase his production and utilization over a season - not see him produce half as much in Oct/Nov/December as he did in September.

So it's also too soon to say that we've addressed our shortcomings in the deep game, just as it's too soon to write off Lloyd.

If everyone didn't assume he would walk in here and just have instant success because he worked under McDaniels, maybe expectations would be more reasonable - but his fast start only increased those expectations.

50 catches thus far is far from bad - especially on a team with numerous offensive options - but I still think this team very much needs a credible deep threat going into the playoffs - and I don't particularly care who that is, whether its Lloyd, Stallworth, Edwards or anyone else.

And he did so for one season, and a great deal of those receptions were him making great plays with the ball in the air. What I'm saying is, throughout Lloyd's career, very few times have we seen him score touchdowns or catch many passes in plays which he just smokes a cornerback and gets two steps on the secondary. He can make catches deep down the field without necessarily being a deep threat. He ran a 4.62 40 at the combine 10 years ago. How fast do you think he is now?

You must be forgetting a little guy named Welker. Brady does not need to take chances with deep throws because there are other options so he does not take those chances. Lloyd is doing just fine, and besides he is basically guaranteed to not get injured with the way he sits as soon as he catches the ball. I like him.

The "media" were the ones that dubbed Lloyd as the next deep threat for the Pats. Fine. Lloyd is more like Chris Carter late in his career, the guy who will make the incredible grab on the sidelines. Lloyd will no longer burn guys deep, unless they blow coverage - which could be a possibility. Lloyd will become the first-down-machine through the air if we need it, much like Carter in his latter years (while he was mentoring Moss). Lloyd will become a deadly extension of our running game in the post-season. He will become a bigger player if our TE's remain unhealthy/inneffective. I believe we will see more of him as the games mean more - as well as the role he came here to play. His possession receiving skills will become more apparant when the competition gets tougher.

Brady doesn't take chances on deep throws because there isn't a single receiver on the roster who's capable of getting consistent separation deep down the field, and so we gameplan accordingly. When Brady had a deep threat, deep throws were a bigger part of our offensive philosophy.

OK, here are many "yatching" about Lloyd, yet many of the same are calling for the return of Branch. Lloyd has his issues/limitations, but he has far outperformed Branch. Brandon has not met many of our expectatiuons, but he has way outshined Branch. Let's see what he brings in the biggest games (he has delivered in those games during the regular season as a possession guy), so let's see what he does when the games mean so much more. I predict Chris Carter-like performances, when we need a 1st down - choose Welker or Lloyd. Welker will be keyed upon and Lloyd will be ignored. It will be fun - especially when Gronk comes back.
