Field Yates said:
In addition, the Patriots announced that veteran offensive lineman Mitch Petrus has been released, and that the team added offensive linemen Tommie Draheim and Colin Miller to the practice squad.

Petrus played in two games for the Patriots as a reserve lineman after being signed on Nov. 13.

Draheim was originally signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of San Diego State. He was released following training camp and later spent time as a member of the Seattle Seahawks practice squad.

Miller, a fellow undrafted free agent, originally entered the league in 2011 with the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Central Michigan. He was most recently a member of the Raiders practice squad.

Draheim - 6'4 - 305lbs- Listed as an OT, but supposedly can play all positions on the line.

Colin Miller - 6'2 1/2" - 299 lbs - OC/OG. Played Center and LG in college.

Cutting Petrus seems to indicate some health, but signing two practice squad OLs would indicate that they need somebody to take reps.

So my educated guess based on these moves are that Mankins and Connolly aren't ready to take full practice reps, but at least one of them is expected to play.

Either that, or Zucevics beat out Petrus at guard awfully quickly.

I think they may have felt they were getting too heavy at OG...no pun intended.

Mankins
Connolly
Thomas
McDonald
Cannon
Zusevics

If just one of Mankins/Connolly are coming back, they're plenty deep. Also, if it really gets bad I doubt Petrus would be hard to find.

I think these PS signings are more of the look to the future/tire kicking variety. Doubt these two nobodies would help much in game planning prep over the OL already parked on the PS (Warren?)

One thing to keep an eye on: late in the game last week, I swear I saw McDonald landing awkwardly on his shoulder and getting up slowly. Not that he's anything special, but it's would be tough losing someone with his versatility.

not to mention cannon and zusevics can fill in at tackle if necessary.

Was very surprised by Petrus' release given the overall health of the OL: Mankins hasn't practiced in weeks, Connolly had to leave Sunday's game, and Vollmer is game to game at this point.

My thought is there is another shoe to drop here involving an addition to the OL. Perhaps, someone they feel would be be better at RG than McDonald in case Connolly's injury situation doesn't improve. Could they be promoting Warren from the PS? That might explain why Kopa left to join the grease fire that is the Eagles having seen Zusevics and Warren promoted before him.

Doubt it has anything to do with Warren. I think having Zusevics' promotion would have been enough to let Kopa's agent make some calls.

Are there any ST/PR options out there on the open market? I know Roscoe Parrish was released and has since been signed, but even someone like him might be worth a spot on the 53 just to spare Welker the duty.
