I think the key thing is DO YOU have confidence in Gost (in the majority of his career here) to make the BIG/CLUTCH kicks when the SB or a playoff game is on the line????? I do not and never have. The kid is a "Good" regular season kicker....but when the big time pressure kicks come up, either BB won't even let him try to kick it....or he does the McNabb and throws up in his mouth a bit. Like the kid alot....I just think he is what he is until proven differently.

I'm a great fan of our Kicker..

BUT...

There's a problem. In this season Gost isn't playing as an Elite Kicker.

My question is: Will he still be on this team next year?

Just your opinion at THIS POINT of the season.

Gost will make like 2.5 mil, what is saving that like 1.5 mil going to do for the team? Probably nothing....don't cut him unless you can get someone better. If there's a legatron in the draft you can get then yeah go for it but I think they stick with Gost.

Playoffs:

Gostkowski Career: 14/16 87.5%
Vinatieri Career: 45/54 83.33% (37% of with the indoors Colts)
Vinatieri w/ Pats: 26/34 76.47%
Vinatieri w/ indoor Colts: 19/20 95%

It isn't even close. Gostkowski has been the better playoff kicker.

PLEASE FOLKS: Stop the insanity.

You're tripping if you'd rather have Gost than Adam in the playoffs. Don't care what the % say Adam makes the big time kick nearly every damn time. Only choke I can remember from the past 10 years or so is that chip shot to win it in san diego as a colt(was like 20-30yds).

If we let Vinatierre leave, it's not too far fetched that we'd look elsewhere with Gost even though he's still under contract. He's performed sub par this year.

I think we'll keep him personally unless he costs us a game in the playoffs.

Based on those numbers. But do you really think Gost is a better playoff kicker than Adam?

Believe what's in your heart instead of reality. If you want to believe in the Tooth Fairy, that is your prerogative. There are millions of people all over this planet who close their eyes, pound their chests and chant "I Believe" - - so you're only being human.

If that's the only miss you remember, then you slept through SB 38 and alot of other games.

The truth is the truth.

Those are the only numbers that count.

Vinny sank the 1999 season more than Gost ever did to any Patriots season.

Gost has been better during the regular season, and during the playoffs.

Keep believing the Walt Disney story with all the music.

So you really believe Gost is a better playoff performer than the guy who clutched us 3 SB game winning kicks including the insane blizzard FGs?

Jesus man. There's no sugar coating it. You're a ******* idiot.

I think the point is that Gostkowski HAS been reliable in the playoffs, and simply hasn't had the opportunities to make the kicks Vinatieri has. So in reality, we don't KNOW if he's not capable of doing what AV did here. So far in the playoffs, Gost has made the important kicks. And AV as great as he was, was not perfect by any means.

I used to defend Gost alot, after this season and last season I'm not completely sold on paying him the money we do. But let's see how he finishes out the season first if he continues to be reliable in the playoffs and/or there is no better alternative next offseason, he will be our kicker going forth.

But for BB, its ALL ABOUT VALUE. If he thinks that Ghost is not worth his salary and Ghost will not agree to cut it, then BB WILL LOOK AROUND at least. We have seen that enough times to know that BB is not looking at past records, but instead like ausbacker said, tends to ask the question "what have you done for me lately?".

Lucky for the Pats that BB looks at ALL the facets of kicking. Not just FG kicking. And Ghost is one of the best.

Everything else you mentioned means nothing.

Vinatieri did not clutch us 3 SB winning kicks. He kicked 2. The 3rd one became the winning kick after the defense let Philly score to bring it to a 3 point lead. Amazing how people alter history.

See alot of opinions I agree with. Hoodie will bring in competition for Gost. He will DEF be making less $$ if he on team next year... IMO scared for PATS with him in a "big spot" in playoffs can't lie.

I'll ask the same question here I did on a previous thread.

When the Patriots extended Gostkowski in 2010, they didn't need to do it, and they certainly didn't need to give him one of the largest kicker contracts in NFL history.

So why did they do it in the first place?

Some people here get way too defensive about this topic. It's simple. As of right now, I'd say yes. If he doesn't miss one in the postseason, then yes, he'll definitely be here next season. If he misses one in the postseason and the Patriots end up losing, he's out of New England.

I think he was more reliable then than he is now. I always felt comfortable that he would be automatic and make the kicks. It wasn't an issue.

Now...I'm not confident in him at all, even on routine kicks. I look at it this way: if there are 3 seconds left, we're down 2 in the Super Bowl and #3 trots out for a 41 yarder from the middle of the field, what's your confidence level? I'm not feeling good about it.

cool avatar & sig.

re Gost.....he will be back next year but BB will make more of an effort to go on 4th down more ;)

Ha!

Yeah, I'd like to see him work through this and be back. I'm just quite skeptical on whether or not it will happen and heading into the playoffs I'm very concerned about the chances we leave points on the field that bite us when it counts.

Even though I never personally made the claim that you refute, I will pose this question:

OK. So, of the hundreds of Place Kickers and thousands of position players who have competed in the NFL over the last nearly half century, Adam Vinatieri individually only accounted for the walk-off (or "walk-off minus three seconds") winning points in two of the 46 Super Bowls to be played in that time and provided the winning margin, whatever its timing, in one other. Your point is...exactly...what...?
