2013 Wide Receiver Watch

I agree that I'd rather not use a 1st round pick on a receiver. You can get guys like Mike Wallace in the 3rd or a guy like Antonio Brown in the 6th if you have good scouting. Problem is that Pats seem to just struck out at wideout, regardless of round.

Not so much draft related, but WR related.

What does everyone see the team doing this off-season out of:
A. Re-sign Welker & Edelman.
B. Re-sign Welker and draft a WR early.
C. Let Welker walk and pick up another smaller receiver (Amendola, RFA Cruz, Henderson, Jennings).
D. Another change in philosophy, letting Welker go and we see a 2007 v2 (Bowe, Wallace) and Edelman plays a more explosive home run style slot receiver.
E. Let Welker walk and sign a few cheaper FA WRs and draft a WR early (Edwards, Roby, Gibson).
Option A no doubt

I would use a first round pick on a wr if that wr is Robert Woods, Jordan Matthews etc.It depends on who it is.

is there any wide receiver in college which is in reach for the pats as a legitimate deep threat fpr a mid to alte round pick?

Markus Wheaton, Stedman Bailey and Quinton Patton all have some deep threat capabilities but I on't think there's a Mike Wallace in there. Those three are more rounded receivers.

Jordan Matthews reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald as crazy as that sounds. He is the cousin of Jerry Rice.I am surprised that people are not putting him in the first round discussion.

Still a junior and there hasn't been a great sense he'll declare. I can't speak for others, but I haven't seen Vandy this year which is why I'm not talking about him.

ah thanks!

i would have to specify this. i wasn't just looking for a speedster who alsways go deep. i was looking more for a guy who is able to go deep and will do the other things too. i think your answer took it exactly!

Wheaton is my favorite WR in the draft

#1) This is going to be the year we take a WR in the first round. Our offense has a big redzone threat in Gronk, a versatile x-factor in AHern, a great slot receiver in Welker (who is a Free Agent anyways), and a possession guy in Lloyd.

#2) What this offense is missing, and has been lacking since Moss was traded, is a speedy deep threat.

I agree about #2 but see it way down on the priority list, hopefully not with a #1 pick:
Signing Welker
Safety
CB
Offensive line
Additional dpeth every where

Keenan Allen declares for draft.

i think we should get Quinton patton in the 2nd or trade up for an earlier 3rd hes my favorite receiver in the draft markus wheaton would also be a good middle round guy. I use to love Tavon Austin but if we resign edelmen and welker there is no need my favroite receivers are

1. Quinton Patton
2. Deandre Hopkins
3. Tavon Austin
4. Da'rick Rogers
5. Markus wheaton/Terrance Williams

Any of those guys would be great for me

Very nice list, but no Stedman Bailey? Personally I'd have Markus Wheaton and Terrance Williams much higher but that's just me.

yeah im not that high on stedman bailey i havent seen enough of wheaton and williams to put them any higher than that. Patton is my favorite wide receiver in the draft by far and would be ecstatic if we picked him. Jonathan Banks said Patton was the hardest receiver he had played against so that is a plus as well. His game against A&M is absurd

I speculated about this in the main thread, but could Brian Daboll's hiring indicate that we're looking WR in this draft? He's the only WR coach we've had who's successfully developed WR's here (Branch/Givens).

that would make sense i imagine we wont go wr in the 1st but it wouldnt surprise me if we went 2nd and 7th or 3rd and 7th. hopefully we get Patton in the 2nd or Da rick rogers in the 3rd

DeAndre Hopkins declares.

looks like Torrey Smith

Where we target a free agent will depend what happens in free agency.

1. If we don't sign Welker, very early. Maybe 1st.

2. If we sign Welker, but not Edelman. I might say 2nd or 3rd round.

3. If we sign Welker and Edelman. Not really much of a need. Prob 7th.

i have a feeling this is the year we draft a WR in the 2nd or 3rd that works. We need a deep threat to spread the field and open up welker, gronk etc in the middle and on the intermediate throws. Look what Russell Wilson was doing when Rice when deep every time getting 15-20 yards for 3 or 4 consecutive plays.

Agree with this completely. I think the whole draft is predicated on what happens in FA, particularly Welker, Vollmer and Talib. Not re-signing any of these three creates a big hole. Other than that, I don't think there are any major holes that need to be filled giving BB some real options but also making it very hard to predict.
