Hypothetical #1: how would you plan to replace Brady?

Obviously, this is a bit early, but I think this is a valid forum for such speculations.

I have one more in mind that I'll present in a few days.

Here's the scenario (all hypothetical):
(1) Brady tells BB on January 1, 2013, that, no matter what, he's going to retire when his current deal ends in 2014.
(2) Only BB, Caserio, and Reese know this. Not the media, not the public, not other teams.
(3) Let's stipulate that if Brady is the starter for the majority of 2013 or 2014, the Patriots will not have a draft pick in the top 16 the following season. [As it is, we know the Pats' first draft pick in 2013, pending trades, will be no higher than #21.]
(4) You're in BB's shoes.

So: What would you do, and when would you do it?

You'd also have to stpulate that Mallett isn't already being viewed by the organisation as Brady's replacement.

But in response to your question, I'd draft two QB's every year until you find one that can be truly called a franchise QB. The position is too important to do otherwise.

Also, I'd draft Jon Cooper because we'll become even more reliant on our running game. Had to get that in . although that is in fact part of the reason why I'm so high on him.

Well that obviously depends on scouting. If my scouts tell me there a very talented QB that can be had in the third, then I'd wait until then. If it's obvious that the projected late round QB's have no chance of ever making it in the NFL, I'd get my 2nd QB higher.

Let's take this year as an example. Possibly the two best QB's available to us are Tyler Wilson and Mike Glennon who are late first round value. I'd be tempted by either one because they both have NFL arms. But there's also a very good middle this year. Nassib and Dysert are two and whilst a lot of people are down on Landry Jones, there's a lot to work with there in terms of coaching him up to NFL quality. And then there's late-rounder Brad Sorensen who I can see becoming an NFL starter.

So the choices would be:

1. Wilson/Glennon + Nassib/Dysert/Jones

2. Wilson/Glennon + Sorensen

3. Nassib/Dysert/Jones + Sorensen.

Which option I'd choose would be down to scouting.

Three more points:

1. I really wouldn't be concerned about not picking a QB to get better positional players. QB is the #1 and only priority.

2. I would however be focusing on the running game because any new QB would need that safety blanket. Makes the Solder, Vereen, Ridley, Cannon, Mallett draft class interesting.

3. I'd do what Indy did for Luck and if I had found my guy, I'd draft receivers for my new QB to grow with as well as have one reliable receiver.

 

[Dynasty]

Yeah Indy had a great idea what they wanted to do when drafting Luck. Draft his weapons the same year. They can grow together and he will have plenty of people to throw for. He will already have Gronk and TEs are a young Qbs best friend.

If we were to draft his replacement this year, Wilson who may go before we pick in round 1, Landry Jones who could be great if given time to develop, which he will have here. Jordan Rodgers, baby Rodgers is not as good as his brother but could be worth the risk very late in the draft.
