Rain in the Super Bowl forecast

As of Friday afternoon the Miami weather forecast calls for showers on Sunday evening.

Seeing as Indy hasn't been favored this much since Super Bowl III, it will be interesting to see if the football gods let the weather even the playing field.

I can't expect that a dome team like Indy, used to playing on fast turf, will be all that pleased to be playing on a wet part-time baseball field.

The Bears on the other hand, can't help but look forward to that weather forecast - which for them is the next best thing to playing at Soldier field in 10 degree snowy weather.

Footing for the kicker might wind up being a pretty signficant issue (Vinatieri Wide Right!)

We can only hope that Chicago decides to keep to a power running game and doesn't let Grossman go deep too often. His accuracy in the rain is only likely to decrease, isn't it?

I'm thinking that the only way to prevent the Colts from using their ridiculous 9 men in the box scheme is to go deep early and often. Just chuck it up there.

If Grossman's stat line looks like this: 8 for 24, 187 yards, 1 TD, 0 interceptions

Then that may indeed be a good sign for the Bears.

Get ready for a weekend of "bad weather actually helps the passing game" from all the talking heads.

This myth is trotted out over and over. Yet no one ever asks them why games in rain and snow and wind are almost always low scoring and games in domes high scoring.

I believe that the Colts will win big. And, they will have an early lead that will force Grossman into committing a lot of mistakes that we know he is capable of committing.

Rain, IMO, works to the Colts advantage with their receivers taking advantage of the DB of the Bears.

All of that may be true, but then again when you look at the Colts record in playoff games with less than ideal weather conditions, well it's just not very good.

Yes, I agree. An early Colts lead and the Bears are dead. Someone please make an argument for Grossman playing well in this game, I am desperate.

I've been listening to the Mike and the Maddog show on WFAN, and they've made the observation that Grossman has been snippy and tight this week in his press conferences, not relaxed at all. They think he's going to try to come out and prove everybody wrong, and end up forcing everything.

I think the rain will probably help the Bears, although I really don't know. Anything to make the Colts uncomfortable, I guess.

That's true. But there is a big difference in a very cold rain, and or snow and sleet, than a warm rain like they have in Miami.

Rain, imo, will help the Colts a couple of ways.

It will give their receivers an advantage that most receivers have over DBs on a wet field, and it will also slow down the Bears pass rush, again if the traction is not that good.

Agreed. If it rains, the advantage usually goes to the offense, since they know where they are going and don't have to make reaction cuts.

I'm sure they did the best they possibly could. I still have my doubts about how much the grass could grow and what will happen when the infield dirt turns to mud - but we'll see.

Did I forget to mention the high winds in the forecast too? Either would tend to limit the deep game - which on one hand isn't the end of the world because the Colts passing game is more than the deep game.

But generally Defenses wind up limiting the Colts deep game only to be shredded elsewhere.

In this case, mother nature might take out the deep game, leaving the D to take care of the mid to short game and making it more of an even contest.

Don't get me wrong. The Colts will still be as favored as they were against the Jets in SB III no matter what. It's just that football's a funny game and that weird shaped ball can bounce kindof weird sometimes, especially when its wet and muddy.

A sincere best of luck to your boys however. If they win, they will deserve a degree of respect from me and everyone else - we all know how tough it is to get to and win a SB.

If they lose, its the Super Bowl of Humiliation for Manning and the Colts. They will have a really tough time living it down - so for their sake, they really better win.

This has potential to be worse than last years SB. I have a feeling the zebras are more involved in this one on the Colts' part. I hope it rains and this SB sucks humongous balls. I hate both teams but I dont want the Colts to win. I cant stand 10 more Peyton Manning sports magazine covers coming in the mail. I think I have got four from the week after the Pats lost.

"Manning at last leads Colts to Superbowl!" amongst various other headlines, I threw them all away, not caring whether my dad wanted to read them.

I believe the Colts will win. The Patriots offense was great two weeks ago against them but Grossman is so mediocore. If the running game gets shut down they are in big time trouble and will really have to rely on some de-fence.
