We ARE the #2 seed right now

Re: As of now, are the Pats the #2 seed????

Right. Baltimore is going to have earned that #2 seed if they win out, though. Redskins, Broncos, Giants, Bengals.

@wash, and @ Cinn and all 4 teams with something to play for......

Can't use head to head when there are 3 teams with the same record. I beleive in this case it's record vs. common opponents and then conference record, or vice versa.

It sure don't looke good for them right now. That's a brutal 4 game stretch.

WRONG. From the ESPN Playoff Machine explanation on tiebreakers:

"2nd Seed - New England
AFC East Champ
Wins tie break over Denver and Baltimore based on best win percentage in conference games.
3rd Seed - Baltimore
AFC North Champ
Wins tie break over Denver based on best win percentage in conference games."

2012 NFL Playoff Machine - Simulate Matchups and Scenarios - ESPN

The Pats clinching their division gives them the #2 seed for now. Not conference record or head-to-head.

And for those wondering, head-to-head ALWAYS trumps conference record.

The only common opponent between the Pats, Ravens, and Broncos is the Texans. The Pats have not played the Texans yet, so the next tiebreaker (conference record) is used.

Re: As of now, are the Pats the #2 seed????

As I understand it, they are the #2 seed because there's a 3 way tie for the spot between Denver, NE, And Bmore. The first tiebreaker is head to head IF one team has swept the others, since Bmore and DEN hasn't played yet this tiebreaker is not applicable. So it goes to the next step which is conference record, which we had.

So we are the 2 seed as of now, but we still don't OFFICIALLY control our own destiny. If Bmore and us win out, Bmore will be the 2 seed because they will have beaten DEN and will therefore get the tiebreaker on head to head matchups. So at the time we have the #2 seed but that is kind of misleading because we still do need help, which we should get.

So the Pats need to win out and, really, hope Denver wins out too. Kind of weird, but ok.

I'm surprised that trumps head the to head.

This. I thought head to head trumped, but I guess I wasn't thinking about a three way tie.

Unfortunately, being the #2 seed today means nothing. There are still 5 weeks to play. Talk to me then.

I think the Ravens will be out of the bye race by then and it will be the Pats. Texans, and Broncos fighting for those two byes.

Re: As of now, are the Pats the #2 seed????

No, we need Baltimore to lose 1 more and we need Houston to lose 2, and specifically one to us...

Guess I am wrong in a three way tie scenario.

WRONG. How about a source for that, champ?

So, if it means nothing, why did you read the thread?

I just can't get over the negativism and defeatism on this board. To quote Sam Wyche, 'We're not in Cleveland!'

That combined with the Pats winning out would give the Pats the #1 seed based on tie breakers with Houston (head to head)

Re: As of now, are the Pats the #2 seed????

Patriots need Denver to beat Baltimore, and then win out ourselves, since Broncos have a cake remaining schedule.

Ravens play Broncos so this means little in all likelihood

WRONG, for about the 10th time tonight.

If we win out, we get no worse than the #2 seed.

LOL seriously, Wrong!

Tell us more about negativity on the board, Guy who is being douchey about NFL tiebreakers.

Head to Head is the first tiebreaker. Always.

NFL Tie-Breaking Procedures

To determine home-field priority among division-titlists, apply Wild Card tie-breakers.

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
Two Clubs

Head-to-head, if applicable.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
Strength of victory.
Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in conference games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.
Coin toss.

LOL! I am usually called one of the biggest homers on the board. What a switch to be called a doom and gloomer. I just figured I would fire a shot at the endless "We are the #2 seed" threads we will have this week.

I think the Pats will end up with a bye when everything is said and done, but next week the Pats could be the #4 seed as easily as the #2 seed.
