This season:

1. NE +24
2. CHI +13
3. NYG +13
19. JEST –3 :p

Now, let's take a look at the last three seasons:

1. NE +69
2. GB +39
3. SF +33

And now, from the start of the BB era:

1. NE +130
2. BAL +62
3. GB +60

[Oh, BTW, the Pats were –5 with Belichick/Bledsoe.]

All these stats are meaningless at the end of the day.

2010 has taught us just how unreliable turnovers are when you really need it.

If the past doesn't matter then why does the present matter? The present will soon be the past. In fact, it already is.

They're not really that meaningless. Whilst stats don't win you games, more often than not, the team that wins a game wins the turnover battle.

The Patriots for a long time have been dominating and that stat goes a long way to explaining why.

Forced defensive turnovers and offensive non-turnovers are a teamwise repeatable skill, and as such are just as much a part of a superior team's makeup as passing efficiency, yds per attempt, discipline on penalties and the like. Unfortuately it's a bit more volatile.

This is a fascinating statistic, and given the importance of turnovers, it is not meaningless, although it doesn't guarantee a + differential in any particular game. I am more curious about the reasons for their success? Certainly it starts with Brady taking of the ball so well, but there are other great QBs who take care of the ball and his personal stats can't account for this ratio. This year, Spikes physicality and Ninko's off the edge strips have been big factors, but that would not explain the longer term trend. BB emphasizes ball security, but other coaches must do the same. Our defenses have not been particularly physical or talented. Reaching out to numbers freaks--What are some of the factors that account for this impressive and distinctive team stat?
