Spamming a Thread - What is the point?

Maybe some of you that are into ths type of behavior can explain this to me.

Why do people read a thread, decide they don't like it and go out of their way to post a response complaining about that thread?

It seems there are some on this board that like to just go onto a thread and start poop by criticizing the author or saying the thread is "stupid" (or worse).

Or just to complain about which forum it belongs in (which is actually a pretty valid point, but still kind of petty in the big picture)..

Sometimes these attacks can get pretty mean and personal. I know I have been subject to this type of stuff at times and I have seen others also attacked.

It seems to me we're all fairly sharp here and passionate about the Pats and subjects surroudning them, so I ask you:

If you don't like a thread, why even waste your time commenting or contributing or - even worse - attacking with profanity and personal stuff?

Just don't read it anymore and move on to the next thread.

Nobody's forcing anybody to read anything here.

If people don't want to discuss a topic in a thread, then the thing will die a natural death anyway.

This is the natural attrition.

What good does spamming a thread do?

By spamming a thread, you actually keep it alive because your criticisms push it back up the list!

if a thread is stupid and/or unnecessary i tend to comment because i want the original poster to get the feedback. for instance, i would usually stop by the weekly chad jackson thread to add my two cents. the hope was that the weekly chad jackson thread would go away.

also, this board tends to go through its ups and downs. i'm a centrist, so during the overly optimistic high points you'll see me reminding people that chad jackson has done nothing and during the low points i'll remind people that jackson is only a rookie.

as for bumping them in the process, if it was recently started it will get replied to and bumped up anyway.

How many times do we need to go over this? Ian constructed this messageboard with multiple forums for a reason. If you want to post about baseball, go to the baseball forum. If you want to post about what's in your linen closet, go to the pub forum. And so forth, and so on. This is the football forum, please treat it as such.

To be honest, you have started threads with misleading titles as if you had some information, but didn't.

I think if you post a thread saying "Watson is on the trading block" and you have zero evidence, it should be pointed out.

Unfortunately, there are lots of gossip sites these days and I don't want to turn this site into one.

If I click on a thread with a sensational title when I'm in a hurry I'm glad that posters respond that it's complete garbage, otherwise I might think there is something to it.

If you want to bump a couple of threads, I'll respond more specifically, but that's it in a nutshell as it applies to at least some threads you personally have started.

If I remember correctly, some of your threads had titles implying they were breaking news, when they were baseless. That is the definition of Spam right there.

I take it from this thread that you have been affected by the negative responses, so they have served a purpose.

I haven't memorized your posts, but i do recall you using the term speculation because of a previous thread title some people didn't care for, (I can't recall).

I think Pro Football Weekly's rumor mill is the biggest piece of crap around, but if somebody cites it as a source, I know to take it as a grain of salt.

I hold Patsfans.com posters to a higher standard.

Mentioning Miguel's work is a really bad analogy. He doesn't make sensational headlines you that he can't back up. On the contrary, he puts in a lot of work to provide factual material anyone can use if they like.

You couldn't have made a worse example.

I probably disagree with Miguel's opinions on player business as much as anyone and I poke fun at others, (not Miguel), for being Junior GMs and deciding how much "they" want to pay certain players.

But his opinions are backed by facts and figures as opposed to "speculation" that is backed by nothing.

I don't think you understand internet terminology, or (gasp) the concept of established internet message board etiquette Armen.

Spamming is the repeated posting of the same thread or posts within a thread for the express purpose of annoying or disrupting. Posting in a thread that you think was ill advised or unnecessary is just what we do here - expressing your opinion on either the subject or very existence of the thread.

On established boards there is also often a prescribed orderliness implemented to maintain a more readable board for the majority of posters. Clutter, nonsense, repetitive threads just push the good threads off page one before many posters even get to weigh in. Ian only ascribes to this policy in fits and starts. I sense he would like us to self police, which is what other members are attempting to do when they question the existence or location of a thread. Unfortunately many here are genetically predisposed to resist self policing and perceive it or overeact to it as if some attempted form of institutional censorship or abuse.

And posting a thread expressing an opinion on an issue that is already being widely discussed in an existing thread is often perceived as an individuals attempt to garner more attention for their individual reaction or opinion than they believe they will get within the existing thread.

Just sayin...the only difference between people who complain about threads and those who complain about their complaints is one of opinion about what constitutes a better message board.
