Some Lovely Chaw For You ~ FootBall Degenerates Only!!

Off The Grid:

Great write up. I always enjoy reading them.

You know, they remind me of Black Sabbath's "Snowblind" where Ozzy sings: "My eyes are blind but I can see......."

Actually, I'm torn between listening to Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, or Black Label Society whenever I watch the Pats play.

But I digress. I also agree about Wendell. I'm concerned because he seems tenuous there, although as you say he usually gets the job done. I also love Thomas and the way he's become competent and convincing at the OG position. He's reliable, and that's a good thing to have.

This year, there ought to be a special award or recognition, though, for Dante Scarnecchia. That man is a football alchemist, turning what might be lead into gold on a weekly basis. He's just amazing and I'm not sure I can remember any other O-line coach who had the abilities that he quietly shows every single game. He should certainly, when he retires, be given a place of some sort in the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Thanks again for another good column for us degenerates.

Couldn't agree more on Dante The Great, Brother Gwedd!! He is simply amazing!! :rocker:

And thank you for those beautiful words!!

Abstract comparisons with Ozzy and Black Sabbath is lofty praise, indeed!! :D :rocker:

Any R Lee Ermey references indicates true brilliance! ;)

Awesome write ups!!

Thank you for the exquisite words of Kindness, Brethren!! :rocker:

Chaw IV ~ Marcus Cannon!!

OL Marcus Cannon

725294610.jpg

1 ~ At 04:30, if you taped the Game ~ 3rd & 14 on the Game's Opening Drive ~ Marcus Cannon was asked to attack the second ~ the third level, in fact ~ on a Screen Pass to Julian Edelman. Cannon showed impressive Speed on that play, rumbling downfield pretty damned quickly for a 330 Pounder, taking on Corner Ellis Lankster ~ 190 Pounds!! ~ and knocking the poor bastard on'is ass!!

2 ~ At 26:15 on your Tape, and on the Patriots' 3rd Drive, 2nd & 10 from their own 29, we went with what I'll call a Run Off Right Guard...and my humble apologies for my inevitable failure to get all the terms correctly, as I'm way over my head when I try to call a Play correctly...but you get the idea!!

Cannon was tasked with setting the outside Edge, and did he ever: Despite having 60 pounds or so on the stalwart Calvin Pace, he didn't rely on'is Mass to make the Play: He relied on'is impressive Core Strength. He got up and in on'm, and jacked Pace up, springing Stevan "You May Fire When Ready!!" Ridley for a sweet 9 Yarder!!

3 ~ At 30:15, with the Patriots down to the Jets 41 on a 2nd & 7, we went back to the Run Off Right Guard. Cannon had a relatively easy job on this one, as he and Daniel Fells "Parkway" ~ the latter coming out'f Motion to line up at Right Wing ~ double teamed Pace, to set the outside Edge, and Pace never had a prayer...

But on a small side note, what I especially liked on this Play was that Cannon ~ as soon as Pace was clearly eliminated ~ showed his tremendous Fluidity by immediately pivoting and turning upfield to seek the next target, though he would find none, as it turned out. A little thing, yes, but as you know: Little things like that ~ subtle nuances of the Game ~ go a long way during the Dark Depths of Winter...when Championships are forged.

Ridley ~ thanks to tremendous Team Blocking by Cannon, Fells, and the others ~ racked up 6 Big Ones to give us a juicy 3rd & 1 on the next play, which Ridley would immediately convert, with Cannon himself leading the way as the Double Dirty Dog Left Tackle, off Nate "Universal" Solder's left shoulder. Nice.

4 ~ At 31:45, with the Patriots continuing to drive on the Jets, we were 2nd & 10 at their 32. At this point, I'm starting to get the sense that Mad Mac and General Tom Brady, having taken it relatively cautiously with Cannon in the early going ~ running very few Plays behind'm, as you can see from my TimeStamps, above ~ are starting to feel their Confidence in the lad accelerate a bit.

Cannon cut inside, behind Dan Connolly, and headed upfield to take on the Mike MidFielder, David Harris, as "Ricochet" Shane Vereen surged right up the Middle. The Team Blocking was once again simply outstanding on this play, and Vereen blasted it upfield behind a gaping Hole, and then cut to'is right and picked up 5 more, as Cannon displayed tremendous Core Power in driving upfield and getting Leverage on the formidable Mister Harris.

Vereen racked up 12 Big Ones on this Play, and another 10 on the FaceMask. And it was on.

What I Saw

This was a very impressive Performance by Marcus Cannon.

He was just terrific in Pass Protection, and when they called'is number in the Running Game, he was exceptional.

Despite his natural athletic Gifts ~ excellent Core Strength and outstanding Fluidity ~ I have had grave concerns about'is Game, focused primarily on his Processing Speed ~ he was often the last man off the Snap at Texas Christian ~ and on'is Lateral Agility. Well, I still have those concerns about'is Lateral Agility, mind you, but anybody who can play 60 minutes as consistently and well as he just did in our convoluted Offense against the Jets' equally convoluted Defense...has laid to rest my concerns about'is Processing Speed!!

Mind you...

The sooner he comes back Inside, the better: I don't relish the notion of'm taking on the Cameron Wakes of the world, though he did all right against Wake, himself, Week 16, last year, if memory serves...But it ought be noted that Cannon had the advantage of knowing Wake's Game, at that point, whereas Cannon was an unknown:

That which has always been called Beginner's Luck is nothing but a wily newcomer exploiting the documented tendencies of the Veterans, who, having nothing about the Rookie to study, are at a stark tactical disadvantage...if the Rookie is smart enough to exploit it: Watch the Mel Gibson Poker Scene in Maverick, if it pleases you.

Remember? Where he agrees to do nothing but lose for the first hour...if they'll just let'm play??

I have no interest in seeing Cannon tested at Left Tackle, nor do I desire to see too much'f'm at Right Tackle, because I consider both'is Burst and his Lateral Agility to be highly suspect...but as a Swing Guard and reserve Right Tackle, in the future? My estimation of'm took an enormous step forward, after reviewing this Game.

Even so, I don't foresee a lot of pulling ~ again: Lateral Agility, or lack thereof ~ in'is Future. That's a Talent that I consider essential to Offensive Guards. And the lack of that threat, to my way of thinking, costs our Offense several intriguing options when he's out there, and therefore makes us less unpredictable that I would prefer us to be.

And I will continue to feel concern about'is ability to handle elite Athletes in Pass Protection at this level, until he's carved out a deeper resume doing so...It is of course the NasCar that I'm thinking of.

But that's nitpicking.

Cannon had a phenomenal Game, last week, and I find myself actually hoping that Sebastian The Cruel takes this week off, so that we can evaluate how Cannon does against Wake the second time around.

Great Find, Brother Andre.

FootBall OutSiders is the Tom Clancy of FootBall Sites: They get far too technical, and you can often skip 10 Pages at a time, full of useless and excruciatingly boring technical data...But it is nonetheless a phenomenal Site, absolutely invaluable and one of a kind in its sharp, crystalline Insight into this Great Game.

Ryan Wendell is blessed with excellent Diagnostic Acuity and Processing Speed ~ which are essential in The Trenches, if you want to pick up the myriad of Blitz Schemes that this ever-evolving League throws at you ~ and I have to say that I did'im a disservice in failing to mention those, earlier.

But I would append that ~ as Brother Kontra points out ~ Brain Power can only get you so far in The Trenches: Rapidly Reading & Reacting to Defensive HornSwoggling is essential to The Championship Quest, but being smart enough to know that your Blocking Assignment just changed, and mentally quick enough to discern that in a timely manner...doesn't really matter if your deficiency of Core Strength gets you PLANTED.

Very nice, OTG!

I appreciate your analysis, your engagement and the way that you push our beautiful language to its limits.

Shane "Ricochet" Vereen? Hmm... don't get it.

But Uncanny Danny Woodhead ... good one!

You may have noticed that Maestro Scarnecchia's Dancing Elephants Academy (there, you've got me doing it!) has a new member who appears to be a very likable guy:

Video: Reiss one-on-one with Mitch Petrus - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

and is also a metal band bassist:

Mitch Petrus, rock star

So, before I make him my official bubble-binkie, do you have any knowledge of his play?

Many thanks.

Heh!! Thanks for the kind words and the honest criticism, Brother Mike!! :D

1 ~ I'm still experimenting with a good NickName for my Super Binkie, Shane Vereen, I readily admit. "Ricochet" is my new term for the ability to redirect explosively in the open field...an Attribute which Vereen commands in Spades. As such, it's a NickName that I foresee'm growing into...But I am certainly open to suggestions!! :D

2 ~ Thanks for the Attaboy on "Uncanny" Danny WoodHead, of whom I raved considerably before he ever played a Down for us, some here may remember!! :D

I come from the Charlie O Finley & Chris Berman School of EveryBody Should Have a NickName!! :D

3 ~ I like Petrus, and I am considerably intrigued at the possibility that we have HornSwoggled the Giants a second time in 6 months!! :D

A ~ The Core Power on the Run Blocking needs a lot of work, mind you.

B ~ He's actually kind of Raw, and his Dexterity ~ Hand Work ~ consequently needs Work, but I've kind'f gotten the idea that that's just the kind'f guy that Dante The Great likes to work with.

C ~ His Core Strength in Pass Blocking is absolutely outstanding.

D ~ If you've got exceptional Core Strength for "Defense" ~ and Petrus most certainly does ~ and if you've got a superior Work Ethic ~ and Petrus most certainly does!! ~ then Dante The Great can help you develop Core Power...for "Attacking."

E ~ I like his Fluidity and Lateral Agility, too, which is essential to success at O Guard, in my Book. He's a former Tight End and Full Back, too, which speaks to'is fundamental Athleticism.

Yeah, I believe that Mad Bill just BamBoozled the Giants a good one. :D

Good Eye, Brother Mike.

Chaw V ~ Nate "Universal" Solder!!

Nate "Universal" Solder

152479596.jpg

1 ~ Nate "Universal" Solder didn't have what I'd call a substantial Impact Play until 26:50 on my Tape ~ that was on our 3rd Drive, at this point, with a 3rd & 1 on our own 39. That was that exceptionally cool Play where the Patriots ~ be still, my heart!! ~ went with not one but two Offensive Backs ~ Stevan Ridley & Shane Vereen ~ and instead of the expected QuarterBack "Sneak" or Power Run with Ridley to the heavily overloaded Right Side, where Daniel Fells "Parkway" was at Tight End and Aaron The Navigator was lined up at Right Wing...those tricky Patriots went with a toss to Vereen, surging off Left Tackle, and that Play was all Universal Solder, as he drove David Harris almost 10 Yards downfield, and cleared a path for Vereen to pick up 7 Big Ones!!

2 ~ There really weren't many Plays that featured Solder, which is usually the case. Mostly he was either asked to shutter back and provide Pass Protection, or to strike forward and provide what I would call complimentary Run Support, and he did both very well. But at 02:21:45 on your Tape, with the Patriots up, 35-12, but the Jets trying to work their way back into the Game, the Patriots went to work, and had driven to the Jets 41, with a 1st & 10. On this Play, the Patriots looked like they were going Off Left Tackle to Ridley, but the Play got Blown UP, as Sam MidFielder Bryan Thomas beat Solder and tackled Ridley for a Loss.

3 ~ Later in that same Drive, at 02:26:50, with the Patriots threatening at 1st & 10 on the Jets 15, Solder was sent upfield to box out David Harris, and did an absolutely beautiful job, as Ridley once again decisively exploited our tremendous Team Blocking, surging through the Gap for 8 Yards, the last few of which were due to Solder.

What I Saw

Solder had a pretty unremarkable Night, and that's what we like to see from Left Tackles: He provided exceptional Pass Protection, solid and reliable complimentary Run Blocking, and only got decisively beat once, the entire Night.

And no Sacks.

Again.

Outstanding.

It's easy to forget how insanely complicated this Great Game is, and how very real and very painful the Learning Curve can be: Solder is a former Tight End who is relatively new to this position, and it shows, sometimes, such as this August, when thousands of Patriot fans were forecasting Tom Brady's impending Doom!!

But as I said then: Nate "Universal" Solder is a phenomenally talented young Offensive Tackle, he's possessed of an outstanding Work Ethic...and his O Line Coach happens to be the one and only Dante Scarnecchia.

That, Ladies & Laddies...is a recipe for tremendous Success.

As I said before, and repeated, on the Dark Dawn of this Season: I think this kid's got multiple Pro Bowls in'is future.

OK, then, Mitch (Mad Mitch? Mitch the Mad Axeman? Mitch "Chateau" -- no, that one's way too obscure) Petrus is now officially a binkie. May the good Lord help him!

I'm with you on the nicknames principle -- everyone should have one.

It's wonderful that Edelman has shown such amazing progress this last couple of games. When you play the game at his size (or Welker's or Woodhead's) you're going to take some very rough, tough dirty hits. Credit them all -- they've taken them and they just bounce back. They are three tough little b*ggers.

So could we start with a better nickname for Edelman, please? I don't want to go on just shouting JOOLEEE!!! at the screen the next time he makes a great play.

1 ~ Those notions are a damned fine start for Brother Mo...I'm in no hurry to lay NomenClature on'm, myself, but I applaud your efforts, Sir. "Malignant Mike"?? "Mauling Mike Petrus"?? There are possibilities...:D

2 ~ "Jumpin" Julian Edelman?? "JitterBug" Julian Edelman?? I've already given "Jettin'" to Jeffrey Demps!! :D

Julian "The Knife" Edelman, or "Jack Knife" Julian Edelman come to mind.

His ability to slice a defense and cut upfield and putting the hurt on the other team seems pretty special to me.

Of course, since the Jaguars have a "Pocket Hurcules", perhaps Julian could our "Pocket Knife" ?

It's early morning. I need more coffee. ;)

...the Family Jules...heh ...

Brilliant as always OTG. I haven't seen that many contractions since m' wife was in labor.

Pre-Season: Tremendous attention to keeping his locker neat and tidy. Never soiled his home, away or practice jerseys. Tremendous commitment to generating threads and posts on message boards. Excelled at getting Coach Bill Belichick to say "We can only coach the players that are here."

Would make a tremendous mall Santa Claus.
A man depressed by the fact that the best photo of him on the Internet includes the little man on the way down with a big voice, Gary Tanguay.

Nickname test: is this something that you can shout at the screen when the guy makes a play? Better, is it something that a thousand people can shout together in a stadium?

Edelman: it's the baby face that does it. He looks so harmless ... but he is one tough hombre.

Yes, Jack Knife Julian is great.

For me, the one with the knife analogy is Ridley. I can't say how much I've enjoyed watching him use pace and strength to cut straight through what seems to be a crowded infield. Steven "the Sabre" Ridley?
