I just realized the Niners will be playing Miami the week before

While winter is indeed colder in Foxboro than in SF, I wouldn't overstate the weather factor. Temperatures this time of the year in SF drop, especially on the Bay at night. Candelstick Point gets a nasty wind chill, especially for night games.

This isn't San Diego or Jacksonville coming to town or some dome team.

Plus, the team coming in will have the best head coach in the NFL not named Bill Belichick.

Regards,
Chris

I just realized the Niners will be on the east coast to face Miami the week before they face the Pats.

I was banking on a time zone adjustment + cold weather to 'shock' that team, but now I guess they will be staying on the east coast the whole week leading to the Pats game?

Can anyone confirm/refute this? I believe they already did this once this season when they faced the Jets?

Even worse, they could decide to board a plane the fly up north to Mass immediately following the Fins game, they will not only get adjusted to the time zone, but also to the cold weather...

Due to all of the Youngstown, Ohio connections with the SF organization, they stayed there last year AND this year between games so they did not have to return home to the west coast.

Former owner Eddie DeBartlo (now "controlled" by his sister and her family--some in name, some in actual authority) lived there for quite awhile, and they have family still there currently. The sign on their DeBartlo office building still has the "SF" emblem to this day, I just saw it last week as I have a lot of family that lives in Youngstown.

It made a lot of sense since I believe it was in between their DET and NY games this year (IIRC), so they simply stayed in Youngstown and practiced indoors with a lot of the perks from inside "family" (we have a lot of "family" in Youngstown, as you may have heard while watching the Soprano's ;) )

I am not sure if they are staying up north in Youngstown again for the period in between the MIA and NE games, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least as Ohio is obviously in the middle and would be easy for them to do again.

Unfortunately the thought of making them come out from the coast issue is gone, as there is no way they'll return home again and then back to NE.

Really? That seems more disruptive than just flying to your 2nd destination and staying there for a week.

Don't they stay somewhere in Ohio when they have back to back East Coast games?

As you can see the answer to this question is above.

Unfortunately it seems as though the OP made a mistake and SF is not in Miami, it's the other way around

It seemed a little weird that SF would be staying in Youngstown for the 3rd time since last season, but since they have been doing it recently it had some merit for sure.

To answer Deb's question---the Youngstown, OH connection is there due to the DeBartlo's having so many ties, buildings, organizations, power/money etc in that area since that's where they started their ownership etc. Having that kind of "at-home" quality goes a long way since many strings can be pulled for the best of everything, optimal practice sessions, etc.

Denise DeBartlo York is the sister of Eddie, who was the owner of the SF team through the SB years. I am not sure about the circumstances but the NFL made him give up his ownership (in theory) due to some sort of breaking the law. Either that or he simply signed it off to her due to tax purposes or some white collar problems, but many have said that Eddie still has ties to the team that aren't just through his sister and her husband.

Mostly though it is due to the fact that traveling back to the West coast wouldn't have made much sense since SF had back to back east coast games 2 years in a row. I believe they would certainly be doing it again if/when that back to back east coast schedule hits again in a couple/few years down the line.

One thing is for sure they have to play @St louis which is closer to boston than SF then back to SF and then on to Boston. Time zones going all over for 49ers

There was a pretty good show very recently on the NFLN as part of their A Football Life series on Eddie DeBartolo; it may still be playing this week. If it is still playing I highly recommend folks giving it a view.

In a nutshell a Louisiana governor was extorting money from DeBartolo in exchange for a license to get a casino license there. DeBartolo was guilty not of a bribe, but for failure to report the extortion by a public official. The NFL suspended him a year for the act, and it caused a falling out with his sister. The property/real estate business wasn't doing as well as it had been in the past, and DeBartolo had to sell some of his assetts. His sister ended up with the football team, and he ended up with control of the real estate/shopping mall business.

Was 'A Football Life' - great episode like all of the others.

Thank you for the clarification, jmt. I am looking forward to seeing it, as I missed it when it initially aired. Of course I've yet to watch the 1995 Browns one either, as that is still on the DVR.

It's always nice to get that 70 bucks a year back in some form that I pay to NFLN ;)

Youngstown? Let's face it, it's the home of all sulfuric acid, asthma and down-wind, dying trees. To say that it's a Rust Belt anachronism would be an understatement, but hey, hats off to the Debartelos who have all those HEPA air filters running in their home.

Not sure what you're getting at, but it's the exact same as most of the other cities in the United States. The New England area is one step above (which is the best step you can be) and is known for their great air quality, but Youngstown and the Ohio area isn't any different than about 90% of the country.

It's a depressed area, no doubt. Many rust belt areas are, but I'm not sure that it's any different than any of the southern or midwest states as far as the quality of the air.

Even if they did I don't see the big deal. Were you complaining when pats got to play san fran and san diego back-to-back and seattle and oakland back-to-back in '08? San Fran doesn't really play like a warm weather team imo. I see them kinda similar to the '05-07ish jaguars who played like a cold weather team. Not that they won't need adjusting but, I don't think it's going to hurt them much.

Exactly. The teams like SF who are built to win with their defense and physicality aren't going to have the same kinds of problems like a N.Orleans would.

As you said, they're almost like a Northern cold weather team in the aspect that they don't rely on needing good/controlled climates or throwing the ball to be successful.

WTF??!?!? I could have sworn I saw SF @ Mia...

I wonder if that was seriously a question that someone missed, although that sounds really naive of me to think that? :D

"Which is bigger..an elephant or the moon?"

It's probably just one of those internet based photoshopped pictures that goes around and clogs up my email account.
