Will the 2012 Patriots break the record of RS Points Scored by the 2007 team?

Will the Patriots break their own points scored in a regular season record?

As of now the 2012 Patriots have scored 407 points which is 182 points shy of the 589 points scored by the 2007 Patriots.

In order to tie or surpass that mark,they will need to score an average of 36 points per game for the remaining 5 games.

Will they do it?

I say no and they will fall short because of SF and Houston in particular who can limit the Pats offense because of their top ranked Ds

I did,but I still think when the big games come about they step it up....it seems lately that they are sinking down to the level of their competition as in Detroit and Jax but they were fine against a top team like Chicago.

I think the problem is that they might be taking those mediocre teams too lightly and that comes from lack of discipline.

But they STILL find ways to win even when they are not playing well and for other AFC playoff teams,that's a scary thing to have to look forward to playing at Houston in January.

Well,if we base it solely on the Green Bay game and the one game they lost then yes,NE will put up lots of points.....we will see in a few weeks.

49ers houston and the fish are all in the top 10 in scoreing defense + no gronk and the OL is not 100% so with that said i will say no but i would not be shocked if they do beat that record

If only counting points scored on offense; No.

Otherwise to avg 36; means they can have 2 games of 24 and still match it with the other 3 games of 44+. I dont think that is so unreasonable.

I dont see the Pats scoring less than 24 (O and D and ST together) against any of the 5; although they might also give up 30+ to several. so I think it is very doable; but not by a whole lot.

I think it will probably come down to that last game and if playoff seeds are set with no chance at a bye; BB may rest enough guys to lower the point total in that final game. So I think they could, but dont think they will bother chasing it; so NO.

If the 2007 team (and Moss in particular who no-showed) hadn't dorked up the SB; then I would be with you (about keeping the record). but records are meant to be broken. And the way that the NFL is going with restricting D; SOMEONE was / will do it. I would rather it is another Pats team; even one with other blemishes-incomplete parts- than a Dolts or Denver (or anyone else) breaking the record.

They have the 49ers and the Texans standing in the way. The Texans looked vulnerable to a team with more offensive weapons against the Lions on Thanksgiving , the 49ers will make the Pats game a statement game for their defense.

The Dolphins are a tough defensive team as well giving up just 20.5 ppg. The Patriots might hurt them with turnovers and points, but the quality of their players on defense make me think the Pats come to earth in those two games scoring in just the high 20s.

The last reason is that the last couple of games won't matter much and the wounded players won't play - that could mean Edelman, Mankins, Vollmer, Gronk, Hernandez, etc.

As the Patriots experienced last year, it's more important to have key players at 100% than come in at 80% and tough it out.

C'mon, you really touting that the Texans defense did well shutting down the Bears' offense with Jason Campbell as the QB? Not many teams can shut down an elite QB like Campbell. That is why he is a lock as a first ballot HOF.

The Texans have been lucky this season. They would have been crushed by the Bears if Cutler was playing that game. They would have lost yesterday if not for a bonehead mistake by Schwartz along with one of the most asinine rule in the NFL that if you throw a flag on an automatically reviewable play that it becomes non-reviewable.

Add the fact that the Texans may have lost Brooks Reed, I am not afraid of the Texans' defense.

The Pats may not get to the NFL record. I actually agree they won't. But let's not call the Bears a top team with Jason Campbell as their QB. The Texans played like crap in that game, but the Bears didn't have a starting NFL caliber QB to take advantage of it.

I think they'll fall short, but I also think it's amazing that this is a realistic possibility despite the fact that Hernandez has been full strength for one game and Gronk will be missing most of the 2nd half, and was his normal self for maybe 3 or 4 games all season being banged up himself.

SF and Hou have both proven mortal defensively lately and with our defense as opportunistic as it is and the likelyhood that we will still be playing for seeding in week 17, it seems very plausible that we can throw up a couple more whoppers and surpass the record set in 2007.

I think they'll fall short, and let's face it, as we found out in 2007, winning the Superbowl is more important than how many points you score getting there.

Also, in 2007 our defense averaged plus one take away per game and had 6 of those returned for TDs.

So far in 2012 are averaging plus 2.18 take aways per game and have already returned 5 for TDs.

2007 we forced 20 fumbles and recovered 12.
2012 we've forced 24 and recovered 18 in just 11 games.

The 2 games against the dolphins have the potential to offset some of the tougher games such as the Texans and 49ers. It will be interesting, but I don't think they will exceed the 2007 total.
