There goes a perfectly good wasted late round pick

Patriots Release Greg Salas, Sign Lineman Mark Zusevics Ahead of Thursday’s Game With Jets

East Rutheford, N.J. — Just before the start of the season, New England traded a late-round pick to the Rams in exchange for wide receiver Greg Salas. But after an extended stint on the practice squad and some time with the first teamers last week, Salas is no more. Salas was waived by the Patriots on Thursday night to make room for offensive lineman Markus Zusevics on the 53-man roster. Zusevics has been on the Patriots’ practice squad for most of the season, but with lingering injuries to guard Logan Mankins and tackle Sebastian Vollmer, his addition as added depth seems to make sense. Salas did see a few plays on one series with the offense against the Colts last Sunday, but his impact was minor if at all noticeable. He was a fourth-round pick by St. Louis in 2011 out of Hawaii and is more of a slot receiver, who some have hypothesized could be Wes Welker’s replacement in the Patriots’ offense. We’ll see about that thought. Zusevics was inactive against the Jets for Thursday night’s game. Salas is likely an option for the practice squad should he pass through the waiver wire.

Re: There goes a perfectly good wasted late round pick

1. How you can think this is worth creating a thread about is beyond me.

2. It was a 2015 late round pick, for Crissake.

3. There's still the possibility that Salas could be re-signed to the PS once again.

How? - simple.... anytime you trade a pick for someone who turns out is not someone worth keeping on the roster (even if they keep on bringing back), is NOT worth a trade, however late pick that would have been.

That's one way of looking at it. By that metric, every draft pick that didn't work out was a waste of a draft pick.

Hindsight is always 20-20. As I've discussed elsewhere, the Pats frequently seem to be driven in their decision making by minimizing risk and dealing with uncertainty:

The Salas trade was a very reasonable trade under this framework. A very low cost (late round 2015 draft pick) trade for a receiver known to Josh McDaniels who could potentially have given them some insurance in case re-signing Wes Welker didn't work out, or in case of injury to a thin WR corps. This is how it was viewed at the time:

If other options worked out to make Salas unnecessary, or if risk management required using his roster spot elsewhere (the OL, for example), that doesn't necessarily make it a bad trade.

For all we know, nothing may have changed regarding the Pats' opinion of Salas. They may simply have decided (1) that they need that roster spot more for OL depth right now, (2) that they may be able to sneak him back to the PS, and (3) that they can live with it if #2 doesn't work out, especially given the emergence of Julian Edelman and Shane Vereen as offensive playmakers.

{OL Markus Zusevics}:

I am very interested on any thoughts, opinions, projections on this guy from posters to patsfans in the know. I know he had a triceps tear if I remember correctly and he's from Iowa? Anyone? Thoughts? Thanks all....

WR Greg Salas, waived by the Patriots on Thursday, has been claimed by Eagles, the Eagles announce.

Eagles keep effing everything up for the Pats. First Tennant, now Salas.

If Edelman is unable to go, that would seem to enhance the likelihood of Branch returning.

Branch (or Gaffney) would actually have to be healthy for that to happen.

The good news is that Edelman's got about 10 days to recover, and Branch will have had 2 weeks to heal up, so they'll each have at least gotten a bit of time because of how it's all shaken out.

The Iggles claimed Tennant, released him, the Pats signed him, and then released him, again.

If the Pats cared that much about losing Salas they wouldn't have waived him - they deemed it more important to get a third string offensive tackle onto the roster. So the Eagles claiming him doesn't really bother me.

Paging Jabar Gaffney, paging Jabar Gaffney...

d%#*!@t....

The Eagles are no good. I'm not fussed.

The issue is not that Salas will make the Iggles contenders.

It's that he could have helped the Patriots. . . .
