The Jets going to pound Greene today- Keller needs to be shut down-Spikes should have his hands full.

The Jets going to pound Greene today

Some moments, the Colts were able to break some decent runs. I'm not savvy enough to figure out why, but I gotta assume the Jets took a hard look at why they worked.

We started off the season strong against the run but have faded of late. Colts averaged 5 yards/carry. Greene is not fast and averages 3.7 yds. This will be something to watch.

Keller and Chandler...2 average at best TEs in the division seem to roam free vs. NE. You'd think covering Gronk would be good practice for the D.....apparently not yet. I'd like to see Spikes and Hightower punish Keller early and often and force Sanchez to work the sidelines. Sanchez has had success chucking the 25 yd sideline timing routes in the past....but I'm expecting McCourty's speed from the S position and Talib's height to be a destabilizing deterent.
Salas may be the x-factor in this game. Rex does not fear Lloyd and therefore will not rely on safety help for Cromartie. If Salas can offer some speed to open up the field, it will be helpful. If not, I expect a compacted glut of defenders loitering in the passing lanes and Brady will be dinkin and dunkin down field....and our little guy WRs will take some punishment on the way. Could Vareen be a focal point considering the spotty Jets LBs?
I'm expecting a lower scoring chess match ....but at some point we may see Sanchez sobbing on the sidelines

Sanchez doesn't come across as the type of QB that handles pressure well and I think this might be the day our defense breaks out of it's shell against him.

I also think the Pats can run against the Jets defense, or should.

I picked 36-23 Pats in the pick the score thread. I'm sticking with that.

As SMY notes, the history of the Pats-Jets rivlary between BB and Rex Ryan is that the Pats do much better in the second game of the season:

Patriots fare much better against Jets the second time around - Patriots - Boston.com

2009: L 16-9, W 31-14
2010: L 28-14, W 45-3
2011: W 30-21, W 37-16
2012: W29-26 (OT), ?

The second game hasn't been close the past 3 years. It will be interesting see if today holds form, in spite of the injuries and the short week. I'm guessing it will.

Talib on Hill, give him a good jam at the LOS to take any timing route away (Hill is slow off the line though) have McCourty over the top in just in case he gets a step on Talib.

Dennard on Kerley, again a good jam at the line to throw off the timing on the slant route he runs.

Wilson on Keller with Hightower underneath.

The RB & 2nd TE tend to stay in to block with the Jets so - Mayo reads the RB, if he blocks Mayo blitzes, Spikes up the A-gap pretty much every down because he has an uncanny knack of timing the snap count.

Then if the other TE does release, have Spikes on him.

In the run game:

Greene: he isn't going to bounce it outside so penetrate the gaps and stop him in the backfield.

Powell: likely a draw or screen so keep disciplined.

McKnight: seal the edges to stop him bouncing it outside.

Greene is going to wet himself running towards Spikes. I'm sure he remembers when Spikes knocked his ass out.

So do we cover Hill? He will probably drop at least half the passes thrown his way so maybe we throw another down lineman in there for a boost in the pass rush and let the odds play out...

Colts seemed to go after Kyle Love. Also, Chandler Jones got hurt. As much as we talk about his pass-rushing abilities, he's very good vs the run. Much better than Cunningham. I think the Jets will have some success running today and it will be a lower scoring game than everyone is expecting. 23-13 or something like that. Good guys win.

Whatever the Pats were doing wrong in the first 2 drives the Pats fixed it. The Colts did nothing in the run game until late in the 4th quarter when they added about 40 rushing yds in pure garbage time.

The Pats should do OK vs the run with the Jets. If the Jets devise something that works early, I'm confident the Pats will counter with something that stops it. Offensively the Jets will present 3 obstacles.

1. The Run - I'm not even sure Greene will be the primary. IIRC Powell is back

2. Keller - We know for a fact that the Jets will try to hit Keller in the seem off of play action. We KNOW it. Its Sanchez's favorite throw and the one he does best. If the Pats aren't all over this pattern then there truly isn't any hope for this defense.

3. Kerley underneath - This kid is turning into a decent slot guy and has to be watched

Last time the Pats made Sanchez look like an all star. But last time we played without BOTH our starting Safeties and Aqib Talib. The loss of Jones definitely hurts. But now is the time for our OTHER #1 pick to start to assert himself.

We shall see.

Agree with the exception that I'd rather have Mayo cover the 2nd TE or help with the 1st TE and use Spikes even worse than Mayo in coverage to blitz. Yeah, you'd have to vary this once every N plays to mess with the Jets' assignments.

kerley needs to get hit hard-early and often...just glad they don't have crotchery anymore-he was a buzzkill....i hope our defense shuts them out entirely

A few reasons may be...

While the colts don't have great backs, anyone will look better then Greene.

Also I'm sure the Pats were more worried about Luck then they will be about Sanchez. Colts seemed like they were ready to make this a shootout. The Jets have a different, more conservative approach.

My question is... Is today the day they unleash Tebow? I remember Sparono saved his wildcat package for the Pats when he was with the Dolphins, I've assumed all along that tonight he'll have some different looks with Tebow, saved up for tonight. Not that I'm all that concerned with it :D

was amazed to see the colts prosper with the run game last week. I expect that to be righted this today.

I expect another close one. Go Pats!

Go ahead, unleash Tebow.

Denver playoff game repeat?
