To STEP UP! Both of these guys have the potential and history to make ALOT of catches for this team while Gronk is out. Time for them to step up and help out this offense! Go Pats!

We are definitely going to need one of them...My gut tells me Fells could be the guy a poor mans Antonio Gates but he might have questionable hands. Shiancoe interesting to see how much speed he has left he has very good hands for our passing game...how far he'll get thats another story. If you put both Shiancoe and Fells together we get a Hybrid Gronk...this might be the best of both worlds.

There is a reason why BB signed them. Depth is a bona fide concern. Maybe Salas and Edelman have a more prominent role also. This might be a good thing, getting reps for the other guys. Hernandez looks like he will be back as well.

Schiancoe was top 5 in TD Rec in '09 (which was a third of Favre's TD Passes) and Fells averaged 13.5 yards a catch with Tebow as his QB last year.

These guys can contribute if given the chance.

Not so sure they are happy about Fells. He was a healthy scratch last week. They seem to like Hoohoo as a blocker.

Hernandez was out Shaincoe is most like him, Oh-Oh is alos the FB and is on more special tems.

And I think that this statement is very telling about the potential production that we can expect from Fells/Schiancoe...which will be blocking, as opposed to what many think in terms of trying to replace the receptions.

If we can get most of the production that Gronk gave us in blocking alone, this offense should be pretty much the same. I just do not see either one of Fells or Schiancoe suddenly stepping up and coming anywhere close to the kind of production in receptions that Gronk has brought.

This offense is tailored to play to strengths, and they will utilize the strengths of players like Welker, Hernandez, Llyod, etc. Production from some of the other players such as Woodhead, Edelman, and even Vereen will be needed also, with Ridley turning it up a notch in the running game. I believe in the "move" offense theory that mayoclinic has spoken of, and I think that is what the strengths are, and that is what we'll see.

If we can get about 75-80% of the blocking, I don't care if it's Hooman, Fells, or Schiancoe because it won't matter. I could be wrong but I just don't see any one of them contributing too much in a reception standpoint--aside from maybe a key catch here or there sporadically.

I think we'll see Hernandez & Hoomanawanui on Thursday with hopefully an emphasis on the run game.

I really don't want Hernandez to play Thursday vs the Jets if he's not 100%. If he re-aggravates his ankle, then he might as well be out for the season.

They need to try Fells and Shiancoe. I think they can get by the Jets and Dolphins games without Gronk AND Hernandez to be honest. Woodhead's gotta have a big game, too.

My gut ( and his target stats for the season 2 rec for 6 targets if I recall correctly - for the lowest completion rate of ALL PATS PLAYERS) tell me Fells has HANDS OF STONE.

I hold out much more hope for Shiancoe.

I think HooHoo has even caught a higher % of stuff thrown at him than Fells. He {Fells} had rec #s from his previous teams that seemed like he ought to be ok; but apparently they either threw a lot at him to get those recs or he just cant catch TB fastballs well.

Too bad, as who is on field; now pretty much signals to the D (HooHoo / Fells we are running & Shiancoe-Hernandez(if avail) it's a pass).

Unless I missed it can someone confirm if Hernandez is in or out vs Jets tomorrow nite?

Can't confirm it (ever on a BB team) but multiple reports indicate he expects to play barring any unforseen setback. He was reportedly thought to be good to go Sunday but they chose to hold off because of the short turnaround. Was probably a good idea since they didn't need him then but they sure could use him now. May remain a gametime decision and he may be limited since it's his first game action since October. It's a good test of sorts with a 10 day recovery period.

Thanx Mo I agree good post.

Aside from losing Gronkowski's production in the redzone, the biggest impact from his absence will be limiting the Pats' ability to morph in and out of base and spread formations without substituting personnel. This will probably mean the Patriots will spend more time in their spread offense with Edelman or Salas replacing Gronk rather than another TE.

Fells was GREAT for Denver and had decent stats in ST. Louis.....Heck he even caught 2 passes for 53 yards here....but don't ask me when that was cuz I MISSED IT!!! Anyways, here is a link to Fells' stats.....

You would think the guy would be able to get it done here.....not sure what is happening....maybe it is the Chad Ocho playbook comprehension problem

Exactly what I alluded to. thanks for exact stats.
88 of 142 targets before getting here=62%. 2 of 5 =40% (and the reiss target #s were 6 I am pretty sure=33%)

I dont think so as the passes I remember being thrown to him; he was open. After a couple of drops in one game I distinctly remember him being open on more plays and TB just stared right past him and threw to WW or Gronk in tighter single or even dbl coverage.

I think the most likely explanation really is the half-joking line I used earlier that he just cant catch a fastball.

5 targets isn't really a good sample size to use for comparison purposes.

A spectacular, very athletic 35-yard catch against the Seahawks. Otherwise, not much to write home about.

At least the Pats have what hopefully will be decent tight ends as back-ups for Gronk. All the jokes about the multiple TE spread offense during the off season when BB was signing what seemed like every available TE were funny but I'm happy BB was smart enough to sign Fells, Shiancoe and Hooman to take up some of he slack while Gronk heals up. Pats should be okay with these back-up TEs.
