Bruschi: "I would doubt that Gronkowski is out the full six weeks."

To me the tragedy here is that Gronk has worked all season and all offseason to become Super Gronk again, and he had just gotten to that level. So, I hope he will able to regain his timing quickly, but we'll see.

Glass half full...previously there were numerous reports of Gronk in the locker room moving gingerly with nagging injuries. Now the GronkMonster has an opportunity to heal all and wreak havoc during the playoffs when most needed.

If this is a hairline, he might be back as soon as the stitches and wound start to heal. Dress it up, cover it nice, good to go!

This is what the selfish part of me was thinking (throwing Gronk's arm to the wind). Can't they just slap one of those rock-hard casts on it and send him out there? It could add a new dimension to his blocking skills! (and yes, I am kidding, sort of ;) )

Yep and I think he stayed in a play or two after he broke it.

He did. It crunched and got worse. They went to take him to the locker room and put him in an air cast. When they turned their backs, he snuck out the door and watched the rest of the game IIRC (it's been a while since I saw that America's Game).

It's good to see that my man Tedy Bruschi has used his post football time productively, obtaining a medical degree specializing in sports medicine orthopedics.

Just one, and it wasn't by choice as he couldn't get anyone's attention on the sideline to replace him. So he stayed in and made a tackle that really hurt... He snuck back out in his air cast while the trainers were checking the xray. Carolina had just pulled ahead on a Delhomme deja vu toss to old pal Ricky Proehl with a minute and eight left and he was pretty antsy until Ty Law told him not to worry, we had it covered. Been there done that. Brady to Vinatieri with 4 ticks left.

His opinion is clearly based on anecdotal evidence. Although he has a lot more relevant anecdotal experience than any of us do...

Speaking seriously for once, I agree that Bru has far more valid insight in hazarding an opinion than us fans without orthopedics degrees and access to the X-Rays.

I am sure Gronk would want to play against SF and I would love to see him play in that game. But we may not have much to gain and it still might make more sense to hold him out till just before the post season begins. Give him a game to get tuned up...make sure that idiot Pollard is nowhere in sight and then let him play.

i have a buddy who is in the medical field. I asked him today at work his take. He thinks it's worse than a hairline if he needed screws to set it. Should be able to heal on it's own in 4-6 weeks if a hairline but who knows

Did you read somewhere reliable that screws were needed? That usually would indicate a severe break and also potentially require a second surgery. There are some external screws, but usually one would use pins or "nails" to set a normal break. Pins come up out of the skin, and when you are healed enough, they just remove them with a drill like machine. Screws or plates are bad news.

Thanx Mo remember it well!

Do hairlines require surgery?

It depends on the hairline and the age of the patient. Brady opted for surgery but he suffered from acute follicle lethargy.

I’m somewhat optimistic about Gronk and expect him back in time for the Texans.

I didn't remember exact circumstances thanx (thanx Mo) but I knew he was still out there after he had broke it.

I'd be psyched if he's ready for the Texans cuz I'm going to be there. But please BB...if he's not ready...keep him out!

I don't think it's a matter of being ready or not ready.
It's not that simple of a matter.
I think the questions are multiple:
  • What is the pain going to be like?
  • What are physical limitations?
  • What are the odds of doing long term damage?

Those are the sort of things you manage.
For example... If the pain and odds of long term damage are quite low but physical limitations are really high then this player will not help the team enough to warrant placed on the active 53 unless the man he is replacing is less effective somehow.

Gronk seems like a guy with a high tolerance for pain. So the question for him are going to be what will be his physical limitations and long term potential damage. I don't think we want to mess with his long term health for anything but a handful of plays in the Superbowl but even that is highly subjective and constitutes a big gamble.
