Brady's Stats

After Matt Ryan's meltdown yesterday, it seems the QB stat race is now down to Brady, Manning and Ryan.

Brady gets dinged for fewer TDs and--esp. in comparison to Manning--a lower completion rate.

That lower completion rate is really nonsense because of the first downs the Patriots rack up. I've never seen a team where a pass incompletion was almost a non-statistic. Mesko rarely sees the field, which means pass incompletions are not hurting the Patriots too badly.

The one stat I took the most notice of:

Rushing TDs:

Patriots 16
Broncos 6
Packers 2

Kick/Punt returns for TD:

Patriots 2
Broncos 2
Packers 1

Fumble/Int for TD:

Patriots 3
Broncos 4
Packers 1

Total non-passing TDs:

Patriots 21
Broncos 12
Packers 4

This is something to consider when comparing Brady to Manning and Rodgers.

Rodgers has had more average games than both Brady and Manning. Against Arizona he played pretty poorly and still threw 4 TDs. Against Jacksonville he struggled for pretty much the whole game and still had a passer rating in the 90's. His numbers are great, and he's an awesome player, but the Packers never run the football inside the 10-yard line, and their offensive output isn't anything to write home about. The main driving force behind his amazing statistics are the amount of touchdowns he's thrown, but that's how Green Bay plays, they throw the football all the time. Brady leads the second highest scoring offense in NFL history, the fact that we use our RBs to punch it in when near the goal-line, instead of throwing it, shouldn't be factored against him.

Brady could pad his stats like that too, but he doesn't care to. Plus if you look at the common opponents for Brady and Rodgers - Brady has done much better besides the Cardinals game.

I'd say punting 8 and 14 more times is being pretty far behind. There's no argument that could be made that the Packers and Broncos are in the same level as the Patriots offensively. That goes through Brady. The Pats have won the same amount of games as those teams, with a much better offense and a worse defense. If the MVP is chosen the way it's supposed to, rewarding the player most indispensable to the success of his team, Tom Brady should be the choice. But I very much doubt he'll win the award.

Yup. So many guys who could win it, so we know how that goes.

Funny, I remember when Manning was with the Colts and, if it was close, people would say Manning means more to the Colts than Brady does to the Pats (ie where would they be without him?) If that standard is applied this year, it's easily in Brady's favor. That Denver D got the team to the playoffs last with Tim Freaking Tebow at QB, and is only getting better.

I have never understood the love fest by the media for Manning. I get that he is a great player, but the amount of attention he gets is far more than any other 'great ' player in recent memory !

Sometimes so many players are over looked for their accomplishments because it seems that as long as Manning is playing and part of the discussion, no one merits any serious consideration.

Tom Brady is an incredible QB putting up crazy crooked numbers more consistently than one would ever think possible even in this era of the QB.

Blows my mind when people think he is slipping. True he is purely a pocket passer but I think we have all seen what happens to QB's with more ability and opportunity to get out and run. They just end up getting beat up and eventually become useless. Brady does seem to have lost something with regard to the deep ball. He does not get as much opportunity to throw it as he used to but does not seem to throw it as well as he used to either. I think he has lost some confidence in it as well.

Has the decision making power and speed of a computer. The only way to stop him is to overpower his offensive line. If you can't do that, he will assassinate you every time.

Manning is probably the sentimental favorite this year for any QB awards.

Right, good point. But I wasn't mentioning that to show how much better the Patriots' offense is. I was simply questioning the amount of weight given to incompletions in the QB rating statistic. It's given far far too much weight, especially in the pass happy NFL now where a 4 or 5 yard run on 1st down followed by a 2nd down incompletion does not seem to hurt these top teams when it comes to third downs. In the old days, it really meant something that you blanked on 2nd down. Now, not so much. This is precisely why the stat is totally misleading.

This goes for Luck as well. His completion % was abysmally low, but he had his team at 6-3 prior to yesterday, precisely because they moved the ball and scored. Granted, his INTs are way too high, and that hurts his rating just as bad, but he's hurt just as badly for lack of completions.

Yeah because 2012 Manning is comparable to 2007 Brady right? In 2007 we had 14 rushing TD's, the Bronco's have 5 so far. If Manning throws for 50 TD's and 9 interceptions I'll deliver the MVP trophy to him myself.
