NT Alameda Ta'amu cut by Steelers

FWIW, Ta'amu was a healthy scratch each game this year, so he couldn't play his way on the field.

Fair enough. But, then: Neither could James Harrison in 2002 or 2003.

The Steelers are smart, and presumably cut'm for good reason...

But that in itself should not preclude our sitting down with'm.

I'd definitely kick the tires.

I agree with Gird on this one. He looked like a decent second day talent on draft day and I was disappointed when the Steelers got him.

Even drunk he'd likely play better than Ron Brace...

Hey ____ Was cut by the _____ should the Pats pick him up??

In 99% of cases, no. There's a reason why they were cut in the middle of the season. We're better off taking an un-drafted rookie off the practice squad and throwing him into the lineup.

High Caliber Grizzlies are MINT.

It would behoove Mad Bill to take a Long Look.

2010 Alameda was great and had he left school would of been a top 20 pick. Maybe top 10.

2011 fell off a cliff.

Draft day showed why we the fan aren't privy to everything behind closed doors. He was passed over several times for a reason. Whether it was gameplay or attitude? Who knows? I would say both after the first 9 games and his incident.

I'd sign him in a second ... to the Practice Squad.

Ta'amu was one of my day 2/3 binkies. He was on my alternate DT list after the "big 3" of Brockers/Cox/Poe. But at this point, there are a lot of questions/issues with the kid:

- Inconsistent play
- Poor technique
- Inability to get on the field with the Steelers
- And a huge character red flag, with pending legal issues

It's a lot to gamble on giving the kid a roster spot, when we're scraping the barrel right now. But the Practice Squad would be a different matter. Get him on the team, show him the Patriot Way, let Bianca slap him around a few times. If he blinks at all, cut his sorry ass. But there's teensy, eensy chance that by the time the 2013 draft rolls around the Pats might have a better read on whether they might already have a good developmental DT in house. God knows the kid has the size, talent and athletic abilty. But that's only the tip of the iceberg, unfortunately.

I wouldn't bet on that. Ta'amu is just not very good.

Ta'amu is not very consistent, and he plays with poor leverage and technique. But he has terrific ability and upside, and at times showed great ability in college. Which is why I like him as a PS/developmental guy for the Pats, especially with all his off-field/legal issues. Give him some time out of the limelight and see if he can settle down, refine his technique, and develop without the pressure of having to step in and perform right away. He's a long shot right now, but there's enough upside to warrant a PS opportunity, IMHO. Probably not more, as things currently stand.

Ta'amu really had shown very little prior to his his legal debacle, and has been something of a disappointment overall, given how excited the FO was during the draft when he dropped to the 4th round.

TBH I was kind of surprised they kept him--some Steelers beat writers were expecting an outright release. Then again, some of those same beat writers reported that Ta'amu was just about the last person they expected to have the sort of incident he did...so maybe that, combined the need for depth at NT, contributed to him getting a PS spot.

It's tough to know the potential of a rookie Pitt defender after just half a season, particularly in Pitt's defense, which is typically too complex for a rookie to absorb. Otherwise good physical talent can look tentative and confused during the "redshirt" year. (Ta'amu is not in the same universe talent-wise as Troy, but it's worth noting that even TP looked terrible his rookie season). But to be clear, this is NOT a guy you can just plug into your DL rotation and expect to contribute. This is a project IMHO.

Whatever happens football-wise, I hope he gets his life together. He could have killed someone (or himself).

Yeah, but you gotta go back 10 years to find one

The Steelers had Kade Weston on board for a while, and we picked up Bruce Davis from there a couple of years ago.

It's rare to see things like that though.
