Does anyone else think he's the best player on our defense (and by far?). I love the way he plays and for a while he's been the only player that I can appreciate on D.

Wilfork and mayo say gtfo

Spikes is very good against the run but not against the pass. He is not our best defensive player.

I already think Chandler Jones is our best player.

Jerod Mayo IMO.

Too many penalties for Spikes, and poor in coverage...

But this is team defense, so his role is complimentary..

Can somebody explain to me why is Mayo our best player exactly? Tell me one thing he is spectacular at? He is a step behind in pass coverage like everybody else, he isn't some monster that you can't run at. At least Spikes brings that nastiness to compensate for whatever faults he has.

Mayo is more of a janitor. He cleans up negative plays and racks up the tackles.

He is not a potential blue chip player like a Wilfork or Chandler and no OC will look at the game tape and say - this guy is going to be a problem

Not hating on Mayo i think he is a starter on every team outside of SF i just don't think he is all that special.

I would say he is quickly becoming are best player but not there yet. He needs to improve his consistency and coverage skills.

He is easily the most intimidating player though!!

He is my fav player on D for sure. I love seeing him lay guys out.

If only Spikes had Mayo's speed. Would be one of the greats. But, I think Wilfork is the best player on d. Takes up a lot of blockers.

Wilfork gets tired quickly and becomes ineffective, but Mayo is having a solid season for sure.

I just read another post here that defended the defense because our offense plays hurry up all the time. Big (older) Vince would be one of the first to fall victim to that. I'd still take him over any other player we have on defense. You simply don't find players with his combination of skills.

He's close but I feel he's more of a 3-4 ILB than he is a 4-3 ILB and he needs to be more athletic. Saying that, mayo has looked as bad at times in coverage and you'd be a homer to ignore it.

I'll back up the thread creator's comments on Wilfork. I think he's become such a fan favourite with his occasional big play and his Patriot mould that people won't criticise him. He's playing a three technique DT like he's a zero technique nose tackle. He's one of the best run stoppers in the league but is one of the least dominant pass rushers we have.

*waits for the 'double team' argument*

Yes, yes...I've used that one before myself but the more I do, the more I find it stupid. The vast majority of fans in here think he deserves his bust in Canton...well go rewatch other guys in there or whom are Canton bound. You think they didn't try to double team Sapp? Go compare numbers...and Wilfork isn't exactly that far off the mark when Sapp retired.

The one thing ill say about Spikes is I think he's as good a run stopper as Mayo. Slightly worse in pass coverage however, Spikes is living up to everything we hoped Mayo would be. A play maker. A difference maker. Mayo is a great leader but he's not quite lived up to the expectation to a certain extent.

He might it be as smart or as close to the leader Mayo is, but he makes a strong argument for our best and most valuable player on defence.

he's got a football last name :)

I think Spikes is a much better Ted Johnson with a bigger mean streak, but not the best player on the defense. He is an absolute stud on run downs. He is getting better in coverage, but still not great.

While i think overall Mayo is better than Spikes, Spikes brings intensity and passion to the game that rubs off on the players around him. But Spikes does have the best name, reminds me of this Spike....Spike the dog

Spikes is nowhere near the caliber of Mayo yet. You're selling Mayo considerably short.

what's the yellow one, one of our cb's? lol

I disagree with you that he is the best defensive player on the team, that still belongs to Wilfork BUT I will say he is the best linebacker on the team. Not exactly sure what this boards infatuation with Mayo is. Outside of his rookie season he's been very average to me. Definitely not the play maker we'd all hope he'd become. Spikes is the best defensive play maker on the team to me. How many turnovers Brandon Spikes caused this season alone should earn him that title.

He's not the best defensive player because opposing coaches don't game plan for him like they do Wilfork. just my .02 cents.
