I was thinking about this today, while I think its too much to say that one player can "save" your defense, but if he can be the top20 CB that he has been, here in new england it can have trickle down effects on the secondary.

for one, you no longer are relying on Arrington who has been horrible and Dennard(a rookie) as your #1 and #2 CB's since it appears Mccourty is going to stay at safety....or if chung comes back, you can move McCourty as your #2CB which is definitely a much better tandem than Arrington/Dennard

adding Talent in the secondary is always a good thing. Im hoping that Talib can contribute and help get our defense in line...because we are going to NEED him to be a solid coverage CB

If Talib can somewhat hold down his side of the field on his own it means McCourty can cheat more towards Dennard's side so he has safety help over the top...that would obviously mean some sort of improvement.

They key though, they HAVE to play man to man press coverage, Talib & Dennard are made for that.

will be more talent..but the D will still be gashed by sub par QBs

He won't help much at all unless having him gives them confidence to play man-to-man press coverage.

Hopefully we'll be stronger in the soft area if we don't have to have everybody covering deeper routes. Adding a player from the top pushing everyone down a peg is always the best move ... it has to help.

Not enough if the DL keeps getting minimal pressure on opposing QB's.

With the missing of tackles we saw today, patching the secondary might take a back seat to other concerns. I'm hoping it was just a bit of post-bye week hangover. It has been a long time since I've seen us miss tackles like that.

The middle of the field was wide open, hopefully he can allow SOMEONE to play pass defense in the middle of the field. I don't think Fitzpatrick had an incompletion between the hashes.

As long as Matt Patricia is still the DC, Talib is gonna stink. The culture and DNA needs to change as it starts from the top

This secondary is so bad that I don't think Deon Sanders at CB would help it that much. From what I can see, the only thing that is going to "help" this defense is Tom Brady finishing drives and scoring TDs in the 4th quarter.

It's pretty sobering when 3rd and 15 is a "favorable down and distance" for your opponent, but that's where we are at with this Pats defense.

right now the Secondary is so bad that if Brady and the offense dose not play a perfact game they will get blown out, the pats have a bad combo going right now lack of talent at DB and bad play calling...my hope is that Aqib Talib will be able to play good a nuff so that they can call more blitz packages because a pass rush is the only thing that can help this defense right now

Pats truly need to wins games with their offense. That much is clear.

The way things are now, our slow lumbering, run stopper LB's cannot get back into the passing lanes fast enough and the Safeties are retreating to fast to keep from being beaten deep. That is leaving a huge hole right in the middle of field. Since we have no pass rush QB's have the time to wait for the play to develop and exploit the open middle.

Talib could help if he is able to take a deep threat and cover him all over the field. That would free up a body to step into that big hole in the middle of the field. Probably will want a LB to try to get into the short passing lane under Talib's man so that Talib does not commit down there only to be beaten on an intermediate or deep route.

If the Pats leave the same openings to Luck that they left today luck will do more with them. He has a very good arm for those kinds of throws.

I predict a scoring fest with Brady coming out on top as long as JM does not try to dazzle us with his ingenuity.

We'll start finding out on Sunday.

I don't think the question should be, How much can ... ? but rather, How much will ... ?

We'll start finding out on Sunday.

It ceratinly will be a good first look. But it could take a few more weeks before we see what the ceiling is for this secondary and D.

Talib will add more talent but this D still needs a lot more. it needs
1. better coaching to start.

2. better talent on the Dline

3. better linebackers

4. better safeties

5. better corner backs.

6. better defensive schemes.
there is a lack of imagination here. the opposition seems to know
exactly what the PATs will do and have schemes to take advantage.

7. better fundamentals. This is not a fundamentally sound defense or else they forget.

8. better team defense. They are NOT playing team defense. players are
late getting where they need to be. They over persue ( McCourty ). They
are a re-active defense always a step behind. They get confused at who
is covering who. ( did you seen the LBs looking at each other when the TE
was left uncovered) That was poor ... they should be ashamed and it is a
coaching issue also.

this defense can be good one week then horrible the next. Consistence
is a big big problem.
This week it just seems the bye week made them forget what they learned
in the first 8 weeks OR the coaching just did not prepare this team well
at all.

Talib will not fix all these issues ... even with Talib there will still be
weeks where they look horrible. IMO No consistency
I really hope I am wrong and he is all they need.

Not enough.

if he does stink then its and indictment against the coaching staff and something needs to change. talib hasnt been stellar lately but he is a big upgrade to the secondary.

This might be the most depressing thread on the forum right now, and that's saying a lot.

He's not God

Talib's addition to the secondary certainly doesn't hurt but there are still too any holes for be guy to make it a better overall unit.

The Safeties still leave much to be desired,if the team could have added a veteran Safety with any kind of talent than the scrubs we have, it would have been nice

The team is probably at least another year and offseason away from any major improvement via the 2013 draft or FA

This years team is pretty much the same as last years.......ride Brady's coattails into the postseason and hope the front 7 on defense can get to the QB.....quickly.

I would also like to see Romeo back but that's a longshot at best, besides Romeo had a lot more talent to work with when he was here.
