Would it be better for the Heathens to win?

If they get the Lombardi, Pats fans can look no further than their own team for the blame. Fact is that many more people are glad that the Pats didn't win than we would be if the Colts don't win. Sad truths, I know.
Except for the fact that people may want a different team than the Patriots to win, on a national basis, I don't get that the Colts should be more popular than the Patriots. First, domed stadium teams aren't as popular, I don't think. There's nothing like a classic snow game once in a while, and the rest of the elements make it more "football", and the "Autumn Wind", to borrow from a Raiders John Facenda piece. Indoor games suck. Second, for the really casual fans that look at uniforms to decide, the old, dour Colts uniform is boring compared with the Pats uniform. As for city venue, Indianapolis, Indiana vs. New England? All crappy reasons to pick a team, I know, but how many fans decide that way? Anybody have a national map on NFL team allegiances?

Anyway, let the Colts win and get fat dumb and happy, which coach B never lets happen with our team.

I don't know if the Pats will ever again be the 2003/2004 Pats. That said, how many teams would take their own record the last two seasons over the Pats'? Not that many.

I'd say two :(

Records 2005-2006:

Indianapolis 29-7 --
Chicago 26-9 2.5
New England 25-12 4.5
Seattle 25-12 4.5
San Diego 23-10 4.5
Denver 23-11 5.0

Not too bad for the #4 seed in the AFC for 2 years. The Pats have remained a top-5 NFL team, but unfortunately somewhere between 2-5.

It took a while to formulate in my heart who I will be rooting for in the SB. At first I could overlook Darth Polian and figured I would pull for the AFC team as I always do when faced with a similar choice. This is especially true since I think these Colt players have stepped up and played some gutsy football in comparison to Colt teams in the near present.

But then....I just keep thinking of Polian up on the stand with that cheating grin on his ugly mug. No...I want Polian to go down in flames again. The fact that it would be a loss to a team with Rex Grossman at QB would make it that much sweeter.

I think I would like Adam Vinitraitor to miss as time expired to ice it for the Bears. I can smile and live with that.

Keep your head up Dave. NE played like the champions that they are. What many forget (even here) is that NE had played 4 playoff-like games prior to the Indy game (both Jax and TN would have made the playoffs with a win over NE) and three of those were on the road. They were really running on fumes. I lament the missed opportunity as much as anybody, but there is nothing for that team to be ashamed of.

Think about it. Indy had every advantage. They were far more healthy, they were home for the 4th time in 5 weeks. The only road game was an hour flight away.....

And it still took them 59 minutes and some dubious officiating to take a lead.

Yeah, thanks. I have my head up, but I'm just really hurting. The emotions in that game took so much out of me, especially on the heels of the San Diego game. I know it sounds silly, but I really thought I would pass out during the fourth quarter. It was a billion degrees, I was nervous, and shaking. Luckily, I got to stand the entire game with the coaches' box as a nice wall to lean on, or I would've fallen over. Just...hearing those fools yelling about the refs being on our side, after the PI debacles...Ugh. Not to mention the idiot in front of me who was cussing at his team in the first half, and giddily chuckling about the Super Bowl as they were coming back. I may have been upset, but I never taunted those people when we were ahead, and congratulated them after the game.

Man, I want that day back. I just know we win that game 7 times out of 10.

I can be happy for the Marvin Harrison's and Peyton Manning's and Bob Sanders' of the world -- but I can't root for the Colts simply because their General Manager is as classless and slimy as a GM gets. To make it a yearly occurance where you attempt to manipulate the rules of the NFL to grossly favor your teams style of play because the current rules make it difficult for your team to win, in my book, is cheating. There's no other way to put it.

So this Patriots fan will be rooting for the Bears. The day Polian leaves Indy -- I'll be okay with that group raising the Lombardi trophy... In fact I'll hope for it (when the Pats get eliminated of course).

As loath as I am to broach the subject.......

Would it in fact for the future of the NFL and best interests of the Patriots be the best outcome if the Dolts actually did win this SB?

Why you ask, would I want Putz Polian and his collection of over-paid referee-supported, jack-rabbits to actually get a ring??????

Well, think about it. For the past 2 years the drum-beat has gone on:
....'is this finally pay-me-a-ton's year'
.....and the continuous litany of weird calls in critical games that seem to mysteriously go the Dolts way

ALL THESE would have NO LIFE OF THEIR OWN ANYMORE.

Could we actually anticipate a 2008 season where the playing field would be leveled back once Polian gets his chunk of gold??????

Or would it just be more delicious to see horsey-face crying on the field (.....YET AGAIN.....). I really can't make up my mind. My personal venom just seems to get in the way of thinking logically.

You make some great points, ones which we can definitely revisit should they win (vomit icon),but for now GO BEARS!! A coltie loss would just be soooo awesome, and Polian can't blame it on us anymore!!:D

It would be so delicious to see the Curse of the Colts continue if they lose... that Monkey getting bigger and bigger - and the fact that they will have to jump through some cap hoops to keep Freeney on an already suspect defense really demands that THIS is the year if any.

If they win, that chip on their shoulder is gone. Peyton has his ring - and in fact, the team that always found a way to lose finally found a way to win. I'll tip my hat to them for getting it done finally. One can't help but look at them like the pre 2004 Red Sox - always a bridesmaid and never a bride.

so unfortuantely, if they win, a great story line and aspect to the Colts as perpetual losers even as they win in the regular season will be gone.

It's great drama!

The similarities between the 2004 Red Sox and 2006 Colts are actually quite strong.

In both cases the teams fell far behind to their arch-nemesis only to storm back. The 2006 Patriots had little rest, lots of tough games and a flu bug holding them back. Their weariness allowed Indy's fresher and healthieir legs to prevail. The 2004 Yankees fell victim to a couple rainouts and extra inning games, thus exposing the poor back end of their pitching that otherwise could have been avoided. With any big lead blown, both losing teams can look back at any number of individual plays that would have likely ended the comeback before it got going.

We shall see if Indy can complete the comparison. I think that they will.

I was thinking how disgusted I would be if Manning got a ring and was coronated as the "greatest QB of all-time" on Sunday, but I'm starting to think that will work against him the rest of his career.

Just look at our own team, we're "the dynasty" yet we've lost 12 times in the past 2 seasons. I've learned that labels of greatness can be a curse since a player or team can't be "clutch" or "the greatest" every single snap of every game.

Once Manning gets his ring he might as well retire, because odds are he won't get another and he'll continue his poor brand of play in the postseason for the next 5 years or so. He may get himself off the hook for the ring, but he'll also know what it's like to get dethroned on the field (like Brady) and to not live up to his reputation (also like Brady).
