Sapp: Tom Brady is scared in the pocket

Brady's been ducking in the pocket without players around him forcing that action. That's why people like Sapp are saying this stuff. It's not Brady's looks.

what a sap sapp is. if brady were "scared" he couldn't be an nfl qb. if he were even mildly nervous, he'd hit the deck. what he's doing by ducking is trying to extend the play if there is someone coming. tell warren to go smoke some more of the hippie lettuce.

His words are like the wind...the wind that comes out of my butt.

Can't expect someone who calls himself "DAQBKILLA" to respect a guy like Brady.

Curling up with the ball, while standing, is not a good way to avoid hits. If anything, it invites them. Also, Brady never had a habit of doing this earlier in his career. He's consistently been one of the least sacked QBs (despite the very same line making Cassel the most sacked QB in '08). It's because of his ability to slide around in the pocket (with his feet still in position to throw!), a quick release, and knowing when to hit his checkdown.

Contact will always happen in the NFL; but the aforementioned attributes will at least limit it. Brady used to be second to none in this category. Now? He's not awful, but he's developed some bad habits that pop up on a few snaps per game....

The previous thread on brady's phantom rusher ducks was locked, so I'm glad you're on this thread to respond here, but you challenged me last time when I said Brady frequently ducks and has frequently ducked throughout his career, to great effect. you claimed he didn't. And right after that Broncos game (that spawned the phantom rusher thread) we saw Brady duck twice against the Seahawks to avoid passrushers. It was actually quite comical watching Seattle defenders miss him with his back turned to them.

3 times in two games, he ducked.

It's been more than once, and it's been discussed on this board by people who weren't doing it because Brady's a pretty boy. Brady's looks have nothing to do with it.

Did you not understand my post, or are you being deliberately disingenuous?

The whole point is that Brady frequently ducks, to great effect. He did it twice the game after the Broncos, and made defenders miss. It was like a Houdini act. Brady ducks frequently. That's the point. Sometimes defenders aren't there. We saw against the Jets in the playoffs, saw it against th Broncos. But we also know that no other QB ducks as frequently as Brady and makes a good play out of it. Against the Seahawks, he ducked and made a long completion because of the duck.

Yet it's the phantom ducks that people remember for some reason.

It's his looks. No one is more skittish in the pocket than Peyton Manning (even last week, he threw balls up for interceptions in a panic when he had a rusher on him, and you rarely if ever see Brady do that) and yet a guy like Sapp would say Manning is less afraid in the pocket.

Are we talking about this year? Is Sapp saying Brady was always scared in the pocket? Or is it a recent thing? If always, my response is the same: Brady has always ducked, to great effect.

He's ducked like 3 times. Every qb ducks. Even Rodgers before he rolls out.

In your previous post, you said Brady ducked just once....now it's 3 times in two games?

Oh, and now Brady ducks "frequently."

Just once, then 3 times in two games, now "frequently."

How many changes have there been in the O-line from last season to this season? Many people forget about the importance of chemistry, between the O-linemen themselves and between the O-line and the QB.

TFB might have looked skittish at times, which is to be expected, if the O-line is doing something other than what he expects them to be.

Sapp is an utter buffoon, I wish they'd get someone competant to take over for him.

The homer is strong with you if you seriously don't think Brady looks a little rattled sometimes.

brady has looked weird in the pocket a few times this season, like he doesn't trust his oline

Sigh. I was responding to DI's post about Brady's phantom ducks.

The ducks against the Seahawks were not phantom ducks. That much was obvious (or should have been) to everyone who read DI's post and my response to it.

I'm surprised at some peoples opinions. Now I don't claim to be a homer and ca certainly voice my fan-based criticism at times. But are people seriously questioning Tom Brady's mental/physical toughness?

There are plenty of QBs (pretty much all of them actually) that have to see the pressure for it to register to them on some level. I'm not sure if the O-lineman send signals or if brady has larry bird style peripheral vision or what, but home many QBs do you see that can practically sense when a defender is abotu to hit them? Anybody?

So, it may stand to reason some of those signals might get crossed from time to time or pink clothes could misinterpret a friend as foe and Brady takes the precaution. I think after al lthis time he deserves the benefit of the doubt and as many people have noted Brady isn't getting younger so those hits will take longer to heal.

If there's been one thing stopping us the last 2 SBs (besides the Giants) it's been Brady's health. Towards the end of the season, he's been getting banged up and some of that may be due to the cumulative effect of these type of hits. so maybe he's under orders to be more cautious or maybe he's just putting another trick in his toolbox.

Brady ducking... people arguing counts. He's always performed this as his main way to avoid pressure and to excellent results. You gotta take the good with the bad and there is much less bad.

Summary:
Fewer hits = good for post season health
Older Brady = hits hurt longer, have a worse effect
Brady scared = seriously? His pocket present has been high this year and he's shown some mobility that wasn't there in previous years. Maybe not perfected, but he's still our guy.

am I a homer, no. I just think there's no QB available who is going to be better putting a Patriot uniform and I'm good with him at the helm on offense. If you want to see scared go watch the 85 superbowl (and I'm not talking Grogan).

LOLOLOLOL. Obviously dear Warren is too young to remember Tony Eason in the pocket. Poor TFB. Even on a bye week he has to listen to this BS.

duckgate!!!!!

he ducks often, and without pressure

He ducks once in a while with no pressure and has learned to take a sack when there is pressure and nothing open rather than risking an injury or a turnover. There's a difference between being cautious and smart in the pocket and being scared. Someone who is "scared" in the pocket cannot run the #1 offense in the NFL.

Said this when they were talking about Robert Griffin saying he would rather be compared to Aaron Rodgers than Cam Newton, Brady's name came up. Which Sapp said that he shouldn't want to be compared to Brady because he is scared in the pocket.

He must be smoking ganja again...

It's fairly often compared to other starting QBs

I'm not suggesting he runs around frightened all game. I just think he senses more pressure than there usually is. This isn't to say I want him replaced or I think he's bad.

It's possible to criticize a Patriots player/coach yet still think they're really good. Believe it or not.
