Sapp: Tom Brady is scared in the pocket

Said this when they were talking about Robert Griffin saying he would rather be compared to Aaron Rodgers than Cam Newton, Brady's name came up. Which Sapp said that he shouldn't want to be compared to Brady because he is scared in the pocket.

Brady is the epitome of pocket presense and awareness. His view just shows he isn't cut out be a broadcaster-analyst. I wish no ill on Sapp, he is a human being after all. But I do fear with more idiotic remarks like this and he will be out of a job sooner rather than later. His time has already diminished dramatically due to a combination of bad work and viewers getting bored with his flamboyant personality. Bottom line, he just isn't very good at what he does and the longer he is from his playing days the more irrelevant he becomes with the new generation of fans. PRETTY SAD.

Sapp is one of the worst commentators IMO. I rarely put much stock in to anything he ever says. He is also extremely biased and for whatever, he doesn't like the Patriots so he rarely has anything nice to say about them!

He does seem to be doing that more lately, and I can see where that can raise some eyebrows. At the same time, part of being a smart player with a long career is knowing how to avoid that big hit, be around to help your team on the next play and the next play etc.

Kind of silly of Sapp to use the word "scared" to describe Brady in any way (if he actually did use that word). And let's face it, Sapp would pee his pants if Tom Brady gave him the time of day. They're just on different levels as people.

Yup. Brady was particularly bad during the pre-season and that loss to the Cards. He's gotten better since then -- far more like his old self -- but it still seems like, on one or two snaps, he'll duck or throw off-balance despite no one being there. He just needs time with all the new and re-configured personnel on the o-line, and build trust.

That's part of relying on intuition. It isn't always right. But Brady's is right a high % of the time.

I absolutely agree with you, and I'm not agreeing with Sapp about Brady being scared. I was just responding to the poster who was trying to say that it was about Brady being a "pretty boy".

Curling up with the ball, while standing, is not a good way to avoid hits. If anything, it invites them. Also, Brady never had a habit of doing this earlier in his career. He's consistently been one of the least sacked QBs (despite the very same line making Cassel the most sacked QB in '08). It's because of his ability to slide around in the pocket (with his feet still in position to throw!), a quick release, and knowing when to hit his checkdown.

Contact will always happen in the NFL; but the aforementioned attributes will at least limit it. Brady used to be second to none in this category. Now? He's not awful, but he's developed some bad habits that pop up on a few snaps per game....

Brady is also someone who MUST have his feet set to be able to step up and throw. In the Jets game, there was a play with Hernandez running free across the deep middle with nobody within 15 yards of him…I think Brady saw him but couldn't get himself to fling it out there because he had to slide around in the pocket.
These mechanics are also what make TB great…so I'll still take that over a guy (like Big Ben, Eli, or Rodgers) who can chuck if off the back foot or on the run.

We had a thread a couple weeks ago that almost no one responded to. It was about Brady ducking and making players miss multiple times. He ducked once with no one around and the thread blew up. It was the very next week that he ducked twice and made players miss, and no one wanted to talk about it.

Does this mean he was scared the previous week? Or just trying to avoid tacklers?

It is absolutely Brady's looks. They call him a pretty boy.

I wonder why people forget that Brady frequently ducks to great effect? Why do people not acknowledge this?

It's been more than once, and it's been discussed on this board by people who weren't doing it because Brady's a pretty boy. Brady's looks have nothing to do with it.
