PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK
NFL: Hobbs call was correct

By Mike Reiss and Ron Borges, Globe Staff | January 28, 2007

NFL vice president of communications Greg Aiello clarified remarks regarding the pass interference call against Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs in the third quarter of the AFC Championship game.

The penalty -- which came on a second and 7 from the Patriots' 19-yard line -- gave the Colts a first down at the 1, and they subsequently scored, and made a 2-point conversion, to tie the score at 21-21.

Aiello said the penalty was the correct call because there was contact made by Hobbs. Had Hobbs not made contact, there should have been no penalty called for "face-guarding," which was the explanation given by CBS announcer Phil Simms.

"There is no such thing as face-guarding," Aiello said. "There must be contact to have a foul."

After the game, Hobbs said he had not made contact.

"I never touched him and the ball hit me in the back of the arm," Hobbs said.

Aiello is full of ****. Hobbs never contacted Wayne.

I threw up a little in my mouth when I read that article this morning.

Hobbs made NO contact with Wayne.

If I'm not mistaken, the ref when announcing the penalty even said "the defensive back made no play on the ball". Bottom line, they called face-guarding and it's not a penalty, so they F'd up.

Fu*k the NFL & the officials. Grow a pair and admit you fu**ed up or say nothing about it at all.

EXActly, AND NOW THEY ARE ATTEMPTING TO COVER THEIR ASSES.

Yeah, & the worst part is that the ref says "he must have made contact with the receiver"...is it really THAT hard to believe that an NFL official made a MISTAKE??

What do you mean flip flops? Axe Vic said the wrong call was made. The actual NFL said the right one was made. Big difference.

Ridiculous. I am sick to my stomach.

I bet Polian had something to do with this.

There was contact on the play -- when Wayne tried to reach up for the ball, his left arm made contact with Hobbs' helmet.

Hobbs didn't initiate the contact, but that might not matter. If he's not playing the ball and Wayne is, any contact might constitute pass interference, as long as Wayne is making a bona fide effort to catch the ball.

Cant you just admit that the call was blown and move on, and worrymore about next Sunday instead of this bullcrap.

How about Patriots fans move on?

That call did not cost the Pats the game, regardless.

I believe PI should have been called on either Harper or David covering Caldwell.

Other than that... the Patriots should have won this game on the field. Couldn't run the ball, catch the ball, or defend the ball in the second half. The Patriots team blew the football game. Not the refs. Get over it and move on.

Polian has, covertly, imtimidated NFL officials. But, guess what Ryan, its the last time.....

Whats that supposed to mean? That NE will take down Indy in the future? Maybe. But after winning 2 at your place and one at the Dome last Sunday, I doubt very much the Colts are scared of NE.

Ryan, I said that in my post

We had our chances to win, but made several mistakes, including sh!t play calling, and we accept our loss, we cant change it.

And have said it in other threads, but that being said, it doesnt change the fact that the officials were an integral part in the win by the Colts. Two highly controversial play, one a call, one a non call, both were gift wrapped for Polian.

This was not an ordinary game. It had very serious implications, and a lot, a lot of money was involved.

Officials should have huddled on both of those plays to make sure they got it right. Too much was at stake. And, they didnt, and that was wrong, dead wrong.

Right. And the Patriots had their share of gifts from the officials when you're dynasty was alive.

Sux for us to have had the officials calls and non calls go against us - However, what stays with me is:

3:22 - Patriots ball and we cannot muster a first down. Then - we could not hold your team as you rammed the ball down our throats for 80 yards. During the drive, we did not use our time outs properly further handicapping any chance of a magical last minute come back.

NO way do I blame the refs and NO way will I slight your teams accomplishments last Sunday.

You won it - you did it now go enjoy your Superbowl and win the damn thing!!

Right. And the Patriots had their share of gifts from the officials when you're dynasty was alive.

I don't understand why people say two of the things you say here. Amazingly, it's only one sentence.

Yes, we've had our share of "gifts" (the tuck rule for one), but why does that make it illegitimate to complain when crap calls get made against us? That logic would only work if when we got our gifts our reaction was "YES PERFECT CALL HOORAY FOR THE REFS WE ROCK!", and if that's what you think then you're wrong.

If we win the Super Bowl next year, no one will deny that it is part of the current Patriot dynasty. Therefore, how can anybody call it dead? Oh right, cause they hate the team.

Right. And the Patriots had their share of gifts from the officials when you're dynasty was alive.
trust me the dynasy is still alive its just on a break.two first rounders and alot of cap space put the pats in great shape next year.the colts on the other hand better win this year.have you seen the colts rfa and ufa ?there are 18 of them total .your going to wish you team handled the cap better .the pats hit a valley this year and were still just a third down and four away from the sb.somthing tells me the colts valley will be alot deeper .

You know, Ryan, if I were a Colts fan I'd be hanging out on, say, a Colts board instead of antagonizing another team's fans about a game you've supposedly "gotten over".

Just a suggestion.

What do you mean flip flops? Axe Vic said the wrong call was made. The actual NFL said the right one was made. Big difference.

Um, the ref himself called a face guard penalty.

How do you square that with the fact that such a penalty doesn't exist?

Which begs the question, don't you have any internet friends who are Colts fans?

Right. And the Patriots had their share of gifts from the officials when you're dynasty was alive.

No, we actually didn't. New England was repeatedly screwed by the refs and won anyway, until Denver last year.

Oh, and the dynasty is still alive.

Antagonizing? Or making my point of view clear.

Just a fact.

I didn't know this was a Patriots fan only forum? If it is, please feel free to have Ian ban me for being a Colts fan.

I saw that about the dynasty. He's been getting his little shots here and there all week. He pretends to respect the Patriots etc., but clearly there are some emotional issues that have come to the forefront since last weekend that he's trying to resolve here. Strange really. Just another troll at the end of the day.
