As an FYI, the servers that power this site are located in Clifton, New Jersey. I've been told that despite the storm they have back-up generators in place to run the entire datacenter that houses not only ours, but their entire client base. However there is still a small possibility that we may experience downtime, although it sounds like we may be O.K.

I don't know how long we'll have power here in New Hampshire at the rate things seem to be going, but I just wanted to let everyone know that if the site does go down, it sounds like it won't be for very long.

In the meantime I hope everyone stays safe, and hopefully it will be over soon.

At least Clifton is a few miles inland and so storm surge is not such an issue.

Its neighbor Hoboken is inundated already from storm surge up the Hudson, and by no means has the worst started to arrive.

Thanks, Ian.

Every minute this site stays on is a blessing - - kids off from school watching movies and reading, wife reading her e- book and I am tapping away on the keyboard and trying to not hear the wind outside after rescheduling all my meetings for the end of the week.

Understand that power and communications will probably be lost at some point by this evening down here in Maryland and we are prepared for that with lost of "no-tech" entertainment. Until then, I'm just enjoying gorging on yesterday's game! Good thing this weather event was well known as coming for the past week or so.

Wow - that's unbelievable. I know they were preparing for the worst in that area but it seems like it's going to get pretty ugly. :(

Thanks, Ian.

The wind is picking up here and I've already heard of a couple spots that have lost power. Our lights have flickered a few times, but I'm hoping things don't go out. Both kids are home from school today and I have a feeling depending on how things go they may be stuck home tomorrow as well. It'll be pretty boring for them around here without any electricity. Although I haven't tested my board game prowess in a while or my ability to build my hotel empire in Monopoly - so there's always that as a backup

Good to hear the forum should be staying up through the storm. I'm in NH and it's tough to say at this point if I'll lose power or not. Here in NH, there's a good chance we could lose power, and in that case I unfortunately won't be able to browse the forums. Stay safe everyone!

Problem here in NH where 75 homes share a water supply and pumps that empty the septic tanks, when we lose power, we lose toilets. Really flawed system design.

I can't recall when the last time was that I was better situated to weather a hurricane here in Florida than in my native New England.

Good luck everyone.

I'd be surprised if you didn't lose power. FPL (Florida Power and Light) and other energy companies have contingency plans in place for hurricanes being that we tend to get hit with more of them than other states (though we have been lucky in recent years) and we still lose power if a hurricane goes over Catagory 1 status. Good luck to all you guys up north. Keep your heads down.

Be safe up there boys and girls - If the NE Moderator's get cut off, I'll be the law around here.......... :bricks:

That stinks! Literally and figuratively...

We lost power many times in Northwood, NH. Finally bought a generator, and haven't had to use it since we moved to FL.

Sandy passed by here 200 miles off the coast. Mucho rain !

Keep your galoshes handy you guys.

So far nothing more than strong breezes and light rain in southern NH, away from the coast. The problem is, as with last year's storm, all the trees still have most of their leaves. Fingers crossed that we don't lose power. They seem to have changed the grid or something in recent years where outages that used to last a few hours now take days to resolve, even though all they need to do is send somebody to the neighborhood to make sure there aren't tree branches on the wires and flip the switch back on. Last year it was beyond frustrating in our town that all the commercial areas were back on in 12 hours (including on the next block), yet it took 5 days to get to some neighborhoods where there was no visible damage to wires, including mine.

There's something deliciously ironic about having this site's data all stored in the backyard of the Jets delusionists :)

Yeah, that's a standard problem down here as well. The reason they concentrate on the commerial areas is because commercial accounts pay more for their service as compared to residential accounts. They'll also be back up and running first because many of those entities supply goods that post-hurricane stricken areas require. Be happy you weren't in south Florida for Frances and Jeanne. It took almost two weeks for my area to have power restored. And this was in the dead of summer.

I hear ya. The dead of summer can be just as deadly in FL as the dead of winter in NH.

I have a new found respect if you survived two weeks during that heat. We were in Orlando at the end of July and the sun and humidity was absolutely insane...it was crazy. I can deal with the heat and the extreme cold back here, but I have to say that took things to a whole new level. I can't imagine having to get through it without air conditioning.

I think I need to leave NH. I'ts becoming dangerous. An Earthquake and a hurricane in the same month!?! I need to take my family somewhere safe like a trailer park in Oklahoma. The apocolypse is upon us!

That happened to us too. It's ridiculous, especially when the adjacent street didn't lose it and we couldn't see any trees or anything down anywhere near here.

Here's my gun and badge. :D

The Jets should just announce that Tim Tebow is the new starter, and then this storm would dissipate just like that.

;)
