I would have blitzed the hell out of Sanchez. The knock on him is that he gets very rattled when he gets hit early. Yeah, that is a knock on most QBs including Brady, but he gets exceptionally bad when he is rattled early.

I hope on Thanksgiving that they blitz him early and often or at least dial up the pressure with the front four.

Would help if the ref's were to call holding once in a while when Jones has a forearm across his neck.

There was one play where Ferguson pushed Jones' head so far back, you would have thought it would snapped back like a Pez dispenser. Yet there was no call whatsoever. If I remember it was a big gain for the Jets.

To be fair the knock on Mark Sanchez is he's Mark Sanchez.

What I noticed most is that Jones gets too far up the field on his pass rush sometimes and there isn't enough pressure up the middle to allow him to make a play. I'd like to see more stunts, and blitzes with spikes up the middle to create a little more pressure.

Bedard mentions that McCourty should make the move to S permanently.

If Chung and Gregory return will BB move McCourty once again?

Some have mentioned that Chung should be the odd man out and i kind of hope it happens at this point.

Good article and I agree. Unfortunately nothing much we can do about it since BB's ego is in play here, despite overwhelming evidence his mantra does not work.

I like all of Bedard's work, though sometimes he can be a little pessimistic and analytically extreme. However, I feel his assessment is spot on about the pass rush (or lack thereof). If we can't trust our secondary to cover, giving the QB time to throw certainly doesn't help the cause.

Bill doesn't believe in a lot of blitzes. He wants to be able to rush his 3 or 4 down lineman and have them beat their blocks or push the pocket to create the pressure they desire, like the Giants do. Here is our problem though: Our Defensive Line is nowhere near the quality of the Giants'. We certainly have the pieces to get there in Chandler Jones and Vince Wilfork, but the Defensive Line needs tweaking for it to be satisfactory in this area.

What we need are more athletic and penetrating Defensive Tackles. We have none of those, Wilfork and Love are primarily run stuffers, and Brace and Deaderick are just bad. Our only penetrating DT is Pryor, and he is still on PUP and has yet to be consistent in his play. Fanene was supposed to line up next to Wilfork and rush the QB, but we all know how his saga ended, unfortunately.

At Defensive End, we have a star in the making with Chandler Jones. He has the frame and intangibles to be our JPP. What we need now is a solid LDE to pair across from him that can help in run support yet can also get after the QB on a consistent basis. Right now, I do not see any candidates on this roster to fill that role. Ninkovich and Cunningham are performing admirably, but they are simply undersized and too inconsistent. If they show more, they can be reconsidered.

:ditto:

Absolutely. Jones is a stud and a future (if not already) top=15 defender in the NFL. Add a significant threat at LDE and Wilfork in the middle and the Pats' DL would wreck havoc. Imagine if the Pats' had traded up to get JJ Watt 2 years ago?

I see getting a potential stud LDE to pair with Jones as the #1 priority for the team in the 2013 draft. More than the secondary. More than a speed WR. More than the OL. Ziggy Ansah, Margus Hunt and Tank Carradine are all intriguing options right now. Jesse Williams could probably play LDE in a Red Bryant kind of roll, but he wouldn't provide as much pressure. William Gholston is intriguing but inconsistent, and hasn't shown progress this year. Stephon Truitt from Notre Dame would be a beast, but he's a true sophomore.

Ninkovich and Cunningham both have skills and I think both have a valuable role with a team. But I don't think either is the solution as a starting LDE opposite Chandler Jones.

What about getting Sharrif Floyd for the DT role?

Only problem, I don't see us haveing picks for it, he would be perfect next to Vince.

The New England Patriots have not adequately replaced Mike Wright, on the current roster, as the third down interior pass rush specialist.

Interior pass rush is lacking for sure. Pryor is scheduled to come off the PUP. He's flashed decent ability. Just can't stay on the field. I'd like to see Hightower blitz a little. And/or you can always drop cunningham or ninko off into coverage.

He's just stating the obvious.

Agreed! Pass rush can be there, is there, will be there "IF" BB uses it. What does BB have to lose at this point. Their getting burnt in secondary, Man UP, D UP send'm with blitz pkgs.

id be interested to know where we were at this same time last year with the pass rush...because I remember it being anemic to start the year with Andre carter claiming they would get there soon..

then, starting with the Jets game Carter/Anderson started going off on opposing QB's

this year I think we've started out much quicker with getting pressure, and Ninkovich/Jones have been making an impact...Now the key is getting it more consistently and pressuring the QB quicker I would say

One way to improve the rush is to get Wilfork off the field on more-likely-than-not passing downs.
He gets no push whatsoever. And under no circumstances at all should any 2 of the 4 widebodies
(Wilfork, Love, Brace, Deaderick) be on the field at the same time during the aforementioned
passing downs.

If Wilfork can't get a breather then, when can he get a breather? (Especially after seeing him
at the end of the game; he was so exhausted, he needed help to get back on his feet.)

So the sacks and hurries don't count because of our excellent coverage? That's certainly a novel way of looking at it.

Trade down from the first round and obtain a mid second round draft pick and mid third round draft pick. Select Cornellius Carradine with the mid second round draft pick and select Abry Jones with the original third round draft pick. The New England Patriots need to find a collegiate defensive tackle who can pressure the quarterback right up the gut.

For anyone with a functioning eye, LDE hasn't been an issue for us at all. It's the 3 technique DT that we're missing.
